Bigger English talent than Eze: Crystal Palace add £45m star to shortlist

Crystal Palace are no strangers to losing some of their best assets to Premier League rivals.

Wilfried Zaha is the first obvious example that springs to mind, with the Eagles academy star ditching Selhurst Park for Manchester United back in 2013, only to then return to solidify his presence among the Palace greats.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka travelled down the same Zaha path in 2019 when he also relocated to Old Trafford, with Yannick Bolasie also another notable exit to Everton in 2016, when the enigmatic attacker left South London for good, for around the £30m mark.

The departure that could sting the most, however, is the impending exit of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal – no, not Tottenham Hotspur – having been catapulted to star-man status at Selhurst Park over the past few seasons, culminating in a hefty haul of 40 goals and 28 assists being tallied up.

Palace will aim to dress up their wounds quickly, though, as some statement arrivals look to be in the works.

Crystal Palace add £45m star to shortlist

The South London outfit already has targets in mind to fill Eze’s void, with the former Queens Park Rangers midfielder’s move away from the club looking inevitable, even if the destination has been altered.

Reports have suggested that the Eagles could explore bringing in Hwang Hee-chan from Wolverhampton Wanderers to add in some needed firepower, alongside other rumours indicating that the top-flight outfit is edging ever closer to adding Bilal El Khannouss from Leicester City to boost their options in the number ten spot on the pitch.

Away from both of those options, other rumours are circling involving Palace going after Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling.

TalkSPORT has recently revealed that the Eagles are the next Premier League club to enter into the queue for the standout teenager’s services, with Palace going as far as to shortlist Dibling as a potential heir to Eze.

It could cost Oliver Glasner and Co. a whopping £45m to land the Saints prodigy, but this might well be viewed as a worthwhile gamble, with the 19-year-old already possessing the potential to be a bigger talent than the soon-to-be Spurs midfielder down the line.

Why Dibling could even be a bigger talent than Eze

After all, when placing both their career trajectories side-by-side, Eze is a relative slow burner in comparison to Dibling’s explosive ascent.

The London-born midfielder wouldn’t make his debut in the bright lights of the Premier League until he was 22 years of age, while the Saints number 33 already has 33 top-flight clashes next to his name, having made his own first steps in the tough division aged just 18.

Just a mere five clashes into this top-flight journey on the South Coast, Dibling would find the net with some confidence against Ipswich Town, with a further three big chances carved out across his 20 Premier League starts in the league. That reinforces the notion that he is a “special” talent to keep an eye out on, as he was labelled by former U21 coach Adam Asghar.

At a similar point in his own development as a teenager, Eze was making waves in the Championship with QPR, but it would take him a lot longer to get up to speed with the pressures of the Premier League, compared to his 19-year-old counterpart.

His first two campaigns at Selhurst Park would see him collect a reasonable 12 goals and assists from 53 first-team outings, not helped by Achilles tendon issues that derailed his 2021/22 season.

All of this is in the past now, obviously, with Eze going on to be known as an “unbelievable” ace for the South London side, as he was dubbed by Glasner last season, on the way to the Eagles triumphantly lifting the FA Cup in part because of the 27-year-old’s heroics.

While it has taken Eze time to get to the level he is at today, Dibling looks ready-made right now – at just 19 – to take the top-flight by storm, donning Palace claret and blue.

In time, the much-talked-about attacker could be viewed in the same light as Zaha and Eze before him, as the Eagles hope landing Dibling’s signature makes the painful loss of the 12-time England international more manageable.

Crystal Palace eyeing marquee signing of "incredible" £40m Eze replacement

The Eagles have now set their sights on a new target, who could replace Eberechi Eze.

Stars shine in Melbourne derby after Cartwright heroics

Duckett and Stoinis also put in a show in chase of Renegades’ 168

Melbourne Stars 171 for 5 (Duckett 67, Stoinis 48, Sandhu 3-29) beat Melbourne Renegades 168 for 7 (Bethell 49, Wells 45, Paris 2-23) by five wicketsHilton Cartwright stepped up with belligerent hitting in a tense final over after Ben Duckett and Marcus Stoinis had chased superbly on a tricky MCG surface as Stars claimed the bragging rights over Renegades in a gripping Melbourne derby.Chasing 169, Stars were in trouble at 41 for 3 before Duckett and Stoinis combined for an 83-run partnership. They appeared to be cruising needing 57 runs off 42 but lost Duckett and Stoinis quickly as Stars’ nerves set in.It came down to the final over with Stars needing ten runs and well positioned with Cartwright and Glenn Maxwell at the crease. But quick Tom Rogers executed two superb yorkers to start the over and suddenly Stars required eight off the final four balls. But Cartwright launched a massive six into the second tier over long on before swatting another boundary on the next delivery to ensure Stars kept their finals hopes alive with a second straight victory.Stars moved to a 17-10 overall record against a slumping Renegades (2-4) in the first match played on the ground since the Boxing Day Test.Duckett, Stoinis combine before Cartwright’s heroicsDuckett has been feast or famine during this BBL season. Two half-centuries were countered by two ducks and it was a relief when he got off the mark. The pressure was on Duckett who had been involved in a horrible mix-up that saw Sam Harper run-out following the early wicket of Thomas Rogers. He started to get on a roll towards the end of the powerplay as he pounced on short-pitched bowling and also executed the ramp shot several times to perfection.Duckett found a willing partner in Stoinis, who attacked legspinner Adam Zampa in the middle overs with several muscular blows that rattled the boundaries. They appeared to be doing it easily until the late twist. But Cartwright and Maxwell combined for four sixes to ice a hard earned victory.Snicko controversyOnce again this summer, snicko was in the eye of a storm after Dan Lawrence was adjudged caught behind down the legside. After Renegades reviewed the not out decision, it seemed inconclusive on Snicko whether the ball brushed the bat or thigh pad. After several replays, third umpire Simon Lightbody overturned the decision which left Lawrence fuming as snicko was once again under the microscope.Joel Paris finished with figures of 4-0-23-2•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Paris extracts sharp bouncePlaying just his second BBL game of the season, left-arm quick Joel Paris was the standout with the ball for Stars and proved an inspired selection. He is deadly bowling with the red-ball, underlined by a staggering first-class bowling average of 19.47, but has proven less effective on the flatter surfaces used in T20 cricket. But Paris relished bowling on a pitch providing assistance for the quicks and he used his towering height to devastating effect with several of his deliveries lifting off a length. He was initially left frustrated after opener Josh Brown was dropped at mid-off by Peter Siddle, whose right hand received a stinging blow. He was promptly moved from the position and replaced by Maxwell, who on the next delivery clung onto a blow from Brown.Paris should have claimed Jacob Bethell on 2 only for Mark Steketee to drop a straightforward chance at short midwicket. He returned in the 16th over to finally dismiss Bethell with a back of a length delivery and finished with 2 for 23 from 4 overs.Fraser-McGurk’s woes continue, Bethell and Wells revive ‘GadesJake Fraser-McGurk has been in an extended form drought and his run of low scores continued after a sluggish 12 off 14 balls. With three single-digit scores in his last four matches, Fraser-McGurk entered under pressure but he wasn’t going to crawl into his shell. He was determined to back his fearless approach and charged Steketee in the powerplay. But he was totally unconvincing as Fraser-McGurk either couldn’t connect or picked out fielders when he did lay bat on ball. Fraser-McGurk made just 6 off 12 balls and something had to give. He finally found his timing and whacked Steketee down the ground for a huge six over the sightscreen. But it proved a tease with Fraser-McGurk nicking off on the next delivery as Renegades struggled in the first half of the innings. But they recovered through a 71-run stand between Bethell and Jonathan Wells in the highest partnership for Renegades this season.Bethell provided the power, while BBL veteran Wells kept calm and nudged the ball around to good effect on the ground’s vast expanses. They both fell short of deserved half-centuries before Laurie Evans stepped up at the death with an unbeaten 24 off 11 balls to lift the ‘Gades to a total that had appeared beyond them.

Kohli 100* headlines India's comprehensive win over Pakistan

Kohli set up India for a semi-final spot and all but crossed out Pakistan from the 2025 Champions Trophy

In the biggest match of the year, with his mortality showing more than it ever did before, Virat Kohli proved he’s still got it, that maybe, just maybe, the little he’s lost isn’t going to define him. He ticked off 14,000 runs in ODI cricket, brought up his 51st ODI century, set up India for a semi-final spot, and all but crossed out Pakistan from Champions Trophy 2025. The holders and hosts need other results to go their way to stay alive in the tournament now.India went into the game as favourites. They were worthy of that seeding, limiting Pakistan to 241 with Hardik Pandya putting in the kind of performance that should make him illegal. An allrounder capable of dismissing the opposition’s best batter and then coming back to take down their top-scorer isn’t just a name on the sheet. He is the secret sauce.Related

And Kuldeep Yadav was the spice. His left-arm wristspin is so rare and he made it rarer by finding a way to be quick through the air without compromising on turn or accuracy. So that means unless batters pick him out of the hand, they are always going to be guessing. Three Pakistan batters guessed wrong. All three were end-overs wickets. Pakistan were setting up to explode at the death. Kuldeep just wouldn’t let them. The injury hasn’t affected his menace.Pakistan were able to produce moments. Shaheen Shah Afridi sending down a 143kph inswinging yorker to shatter Rohit Sharma’s stumps. Abrar Ahmed conjuring a carrom ball from hell to get rid of a rampaging Shubman Gill. But when it came to capitalising on them, they just couldn’t. The result: a world champion side that was renowned for pulling games out of the fire now seems to do the first part right – they definitely got into trouble in Dubai – but the other part, the important part, is going so very wrong. Pakistan were 151 for 2 in the 34th over before they were bowled out for 241 with the most inexperienced member of the India side dictating terms, Harshit Rana and his slower balls were just impossible to hit.A game in an ICC event and a rivalry with history bursting out of every pore eventually became so one-sided that its last few moments were dominated by an individual pursuit. Axar Patel turned down an easy two so Kohli could get to his hundred. The crowd in Dubai loved that. There were 12 runs to get for India’s victory and 12 runs to get for their hero’s century and they chanted his name over and over. Pakistan were nowhere to be found. Ever since a collapse of 3 for 11 in 19 balls, this game turned pear-shaped for them.1:10

Manjrekar: Hardik always delivers on the big stage

Mohammad Rizwan had banked on the innings going so differently. He came in at 47 for 2 and hit his first ball for four and then decided run-scoring was not for him. He was 24 off 50. He barely hit the ball in anger. He point blank refused to. At the other end, Saud Shakeel was at least making an effort to turn the good balls he was facing into singles. When he got to fifty, he had weathered only 29 dot balls. At the same time, Rizwan at the other end, had racked up 40. India did well by denying him spin to start his innings. But still, this was a better pitch than the opening game in Dubai a few days ago. It wasn’t flat, but it had a little more pace in it, and it got better under lights. Rizwan, though, batted like it was cursed. He was worried bad things would happen if he tried to hit the ball hard. And it kinda did. Rizwan fell trying to hit Axar out of the ground and his wicket triggered a collapse. Shakeel fell in the next over and Tayyab Tahir followed soon after. India, having spent 320 deliveries across two matches searching for a wicket in the middle overs, had found three in the space of four. Pakistan were 165 for 5. Soon they would be 200 for 7, having to negotiate the last 7.1 overs of the innings with their tail exposed.India’s discipline never let Pakistan off the hook and leading the way was Hardik, banging the ball just short of a length on a pitch that was offering a bit of grip and some tennis-ball bounce. He took out Babar Azam at a time when India’s lead fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, was off the field with a shin problem, and he did Shakeel for lack of pace just after the left-hand batter had smacked him for four. He always knew what to do to exploit the conditions and make the batter’s life miserable. On the back of his work, Kuldeep and Rana bowled 6.4 death overs for 28 runs and picked up four wickets.1:54

Urooj: Pakistan have let themselves down again

Gill was the star of India’s chase early on, a conscious effort to keep his front foot from moving too far forward and across leaving him excellently placed to take advantage of Afridi and his full-length deliveries when there was no swing on offer. When he rammed the fast bowler down the ground and then one-upped it by coming down the track and lifting the ball into the sightscreen, it looked like it was going to be his day. Abrar intervened with a ball that drifted in, tempting Gill to close the face of his bat, and turned away to rattle middle and off stump. Gill was stunned.Kohli, too, offered a shrug of his shoulders. He looked vulnerable against Abrar too and was almost bowled playing back to him. But against the quicks, he was vintage. He went past 14,000 runs with a crisp cover drive off Haris Rauf. All of Pakistan’s best bowlers offer pace on the ball. And that is Kohli’s happy place. A batter of his quality needs to be made uncomfortable at the crease when he is new. He had been dismissed five times in his last six ODIs by legspin. Pakistan had one of those and they felt they couldn’t go to him.2:07

Manjrekar: Shreyas now looks comfortable against the short ball

Shreyas Iyer helped himself to a half-century. A little change in his technique where he holds his bat higher and waves it as the bowler approaches, creating momentum into his shots, is helping him deal with an earlier weakness against the short ball. He clubbed Rauf for four in front of square to prove it. But there was no taking the spotlight from his senior partner.Kohli was setting the tempo. Pakistan had allowed him to do so. Though he only hit three of his first 62 balls to the boundary, he already had fifty runs to his name. He knows how to score quickly without looking for big shots. The ball wasn’t stopping on the surface as much under lights. Things were working in his favour again. He almost knew he was going to get a hundred. He demanded an explanation when Axar turned down a second run off a wide in the 42nd over when it was clear to everybody else that all he was doing was make sure Kohli had the best chance to get to three figures with time running out. When he did, off the last ball of the match, Kohli looked to the dressing room and literally said, “I told you. Relax.” That was how easy this was. That was how inevitable he was.

New Giakoumakis: Celtic in talks for £8m star who can "become world-class"

Celtic are set to be extremely busy in the closing hours of the transfer market.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League this week, dumped out by Kairat on penalties in the play-off round, Brendan Rodgers is demanding signings ahead of a Europa League campaign.

Well, he has so far got his wish, with winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha arriving from Royal Antwerp for £5m, while left-back Marcelo Saracchi has also joined on a season-long loan from Boca Juniors, with a £2m option to buy.

However, Celtic supporters’ main focus remains the striker situation, so could the Celts land their number one target, a forward reminiscent of Giorgos Giakoumakis?

Celtic's search for a striker

Somewhat out of nowhere, as reported by various sources, Swansea City have agreed to sign Adam Idah for £7m.

The Republic of Ireland international only joined Celtic permanently for £9.5m last summer, but has yet to nail down a regular starting spot, hooked at half time of the miserable Champions League first leg against Kairat at Parkhead.

Idah successfully completed a medical in South Wales on Friday, but will only be allowed to leave if the Hoops secure a replacement.

So, as reported by the Herald, Celtic’s first-choice target to be just that is Kasper Dolberg.

The Hoops’ opening bid has been rejected, with Anderlecht valuing the Danish international at around £8m, with the Celts ‘yet to match’ this valuation, after initial talks.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Belgian club are, somewhat, under pressure to sell, having crashed out of the Conference League on Thursday, beaten 2-0 by AEK Athens, but are ‘reluctant’ to lose their star attacker, so will Celtic make an offer that satisfies the record-34-times Belgian champions?

What Kasper Dolberg would bring to Celtic

Still only 27 years old, it feels like Dolberg – who Peter Bosz once claimed can “become absolute world-class” – has been around forever.

The Dane first burst onto the scene at Ajax, scoring an impressive 45 goals in 119 appearances for the Amsterdam-based giants, a key figure in the side that reached the Europa League Final in 2017 and the Champions League semi-finals two years later.

This form earned him a big-money move to Nice in the summer of 2019 but, despite scoring 11 Ligue 1 goals during his first season in the French Riviera, he did not live up to expectations.

He was shipped out on loan to Sevilla and then Hoffenheim, scoring no goals for los Nervionenses and just two in the colours of die Kraichgauer, but has really rediscovered his best form since moving to Anderlecht two summers ago.

In 95 appearances for the Purple and Whites, Dolberg has accumulated 44 goals, only two players bettered his tally of 18 in last season’s Jupiler Pro League, scoring five goals already this season, on target against Häcken, Sheriff Tiraspol and AEK Athens in UEFA qualifiers.

His form in Brussels has also seen Dolberg work his way back into the international picture, likely to be leading the line for Denmark against Scotland in a World Cup qualifier next Friday night.

So which Celtic striker from the not-too-distant past would Dolberg be reminiscent of?

Well, like the Dane, Giakoumakis joined Celtic in his mid-20s, having bounced around various European clubs, as the table below documents.

As the table notes, Dolberg in the present day has achieved far more in his career than Giakoumakis had when he was signed by Ange Postecoglou in August 2021.

Giakoumakis

Well, the Greek international made quite the impact at Parkhead, scoring 26 times in Hoops, averaging a goal every 97 minutes, picking up the Premiership golden boot during his sole full-season in Glasgow.

Thus, if Dolberg could replicate anything like that, he would be a roaring success, surely representing a major upgrade on the outgoing Idah.

Rodgers can forget Yang: Celtic in talks over late move for £5m sensation

After crashing out of the Champions League against Kairat, Celtic need new attackers, now in talks to sign a £5m Yang Hyun-Jun upgrade.

It's not Calvert-Lewin: Leeds star is quickly becoming their new Bamford

Irrespective of what did, or did not, happen on deadline day, Leeds United still had an incredibly busy summer transfer window for their return to the Premier League.

They may not have landed Facundo Buonanotte or Harry Wilson in the final days of the window, but they did make ten first-team additions to the squad, including the likes of Anton Stach, Lucas Perri, Sean Longstaff, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The depth of incoming signings meant that there were always going to have to be exits along the way, and Patrick Bamford was one star who had to move on from Elland Road.

Why Patrick Bamford left Leeds United

In July, Daniel Farke confirmed to the media that he told the former England international that he was not going to be in the squad for the Premier League season.

The Leeds boss told reporters: “In the second day of pre-season, I got him into my office and told him he is not in my plans for the upcoming season. It would have been easy for me to hide behind the sporting director or wait until we got someone else in, but he has done so much for this club, he deserves respect and transparency.”

It did not come as a huge surprise, though, after the forward ended the 2024/25 campaign with 17 Championship appearances and zero starts, per Sofascore.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Leeds and Bamford then came to an agreement to terminate his contract a year early to look elsewhere for a new club, but he has yet to find one at the time of writing.

The left-footed forward was a Marmite figure among supporters in recent seasons, becoming a bit of a scapegoat at times. Now, Leeds may have a new scapegoat in the squad after Bamford’s departure, and it is not Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds have found their new Patrick Bamford

The former Everton man may be the most obvious player to take on that mantle given that he missed a penalty and missed four ‘big chances’ off the bench in his debut against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.

However, Calvert-Lewin has yet to start a game for the club and did not have a pre-season with a team, which means that he is getting a bit of slack for the moment.

One player who is not getting much slack is Wales international Dan James, who appears to be on his way to becoming the team’s new scapegoat after Bamford.

As you can see in the table above, the former Manchester United man has not had a strong start to the season in the Premier League, with a complete lack of impact in the final third.

LeedsUnitedNews claimed this week that James’ position in the starting XI should be under threat because of his disappointing performances, and stated that Farke should be ‘concerned’ by his form.

It is fair to say that he has not had the best start to the season, and supporters will remember that he was loaned out to Fulham when the Whites were last in the Premier League because he was not deemed to be good enough for the squad, but he is still a useful player.

Like Bamford, who scored 60 goals for the club, did in recent seasons, James will still have a part to play for Farke, after scoring 25 goals in the last two seasons for the German boss.

James, who pundit Sanny Rudravajhala once described as “electric”, may just have to settle for using his speed as a weapon off the bench, rather than being relied upon as a starter week-in-week-out.

Whilst he has faced his fair share of criticism and his place in the team may be at risk, as explained by LeedsUnitedNews, the Welshman could be an impactful player for the club in a different way this season.

Leeds let a "magnificent" CF go for £0, now he's outscoring Calvert-Lewin

Therefore, whilst he may be on his way to being the new Bamford at the moment, James dropping to the bench to play a slightly more reserved role may lead to less criticism of his performances due to him not being as important to the team.

Fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib has earned a maiden Test call-up while Taskin Ahmed’s injury has forced him out of the Bangladesh squad for the first Test against Zimbabwe in Sylhet from April 20. Taskin is rehabilitating for a left Achilles tendon issue, with Tanzim getting in as a like-for-like replacement. The BCB has also given a break to Litton Das to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He is part of Karachi Kings in the league which begins on April 11.Taskin and Litton were part of the two-Test series against West Indies, which was Bangladesh’s last Test assignment in late November 2024. Those returning to the side include regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim, who missed the Tests against West Indies due to injuries.Offspinner Nayeem Hasan is also in the 15-member squad, apart from fast bowlers Khaled Ahmed and Tanzim. There was, however, no place for Shahadat Hossain and Shoriful Islam, who featured in the West Indies Tests, as well as Hasan Murad.”We have formed the Test team with our best possible players,” chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain said. “We are returning to Tests after four months. We have Tests against Sri Lanka in June and we haven’t really done that well in home Tests in the last 12 months. This is why we are refraining from experimenting in this Test series.”Taskin Ahmed is currently rehabilitating for a left Achilles tendon issue•Aamir Qureshi/AFP/Getty Images

Bangladesh are also monitoring Ebadot Hossain’s progress, who has returned to competitive cricket this season after a long injury layoff.”Tanzim has shown promise in the white-ball sides,” Ashraf said. “He has shown hunger and ability to take wickets. He has earned his place in the side. We are still observing Ebadot Hossain. We have a lot of cricket coming up, so those who are missing out from the first Test, have no reason to worry.”The Bangladesh side will undertake a ten-day training camp in Sylhet ahead of the first Test.
