Samson: 'Mindset can change for few moments when you think the job is done'

Sunrisers’ hero Abdul Samad meanwhile says he “got lucky today” in getting a second chance, via a no-ball, at finishing the game for his team

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-20232:13

Moody: Samad reminds me of a young Yusuf Pathan

After the dramatic defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson said that the nature of the IPL means that any team can conjure up a result even out of difficult circumstances, but admitted it hurt to bowl no-balls at crucial moments, like the last ball of the match.Sandeep Sharma had 16 to defend off the final over, and when he had Abdul Samad caught at long-off off the final delivery the Royals players had started their celebrations. But it was premature as the no-ball siren went off and they had to go through the process once more, except Samad had the benefit of facing a free hit. With four runs now needed, Samad drilled Sandeep back over his head to seal victory for Sunrisers.”To be very honest, we all know that that’s what IPL gives you. Matches like these, that’s what makes IPL so special. You can never never never feel like you’ve won the game,” Samson told the broadcaster after the game.Abdul Samad smashed an unbeaten 17 off seven to seal the win for SRH•BCCI

“I was very confident with Sandeep. He has won us a game with almost a similar situation. He did it again today but that no-ball actually ruined our result,” he said.”It’s a no-ball, you have to bowl it again, as simple as that. You don’t think about it too much,” Samson said when quizzed about how he reacted to having to regroup his troops. “And I think Sandeep knows what to do. But definitely in the mindset there might be a small change for few seconds when you think the job is done. Almost everyone was celebrating.”But that’s the nature of the game. You can’t step the line at that time in the game.”Samad, the beneficiary of the no-ball, was quick to admit that he was fortunate as he finished unbeaten on 17 off seven.”I was just waiting for the ball to get in the slot eventually and luckily I got a no-ball as well. I got lucky today,” Samad said. “When I crossed the crease the umpire signalled no-ball, so I told Marco [Jansen] to come back. Umpire told us only one run will be given. I was waiting for the ball to hit in the right area. That’s it, it went there, I went for it and it worked out.”Sunrisers captain Markram was “super grateful and relieved” with the close win and he heaped praise on Samad.”Emotions turned quite quickly there, but nice for us to get over the line. Another close game,” Markram said at the post-game presentation ceremony.”Means a lot to the guys, someone like Samad who works hard and only really bats when he is expected to sort of get 15 from an over. It’s never easy,” Markram said.

Zimbabwe stun West Indies to storm into Super Sixes with full points

West Indies are also through but with a handicap, having conceded a game of small margins in front of a bouncing Harare crowd

Before the game, West Indies were favourites. At the halfway mark, West Indies remained favourites. And at the midway point of the chase, West Indies were arguably even stronger favourites. Yet, somehow, improbably, preposterously, it’s Zimbabwe that emerged winners by 35 runs, in front of a raucous crowd in Harare.By virtue of this win, Zimbabwe carry over a strong net run rate into the next round, and two points from this game as well as the same from their win against Netherlands. With a tricky game against Sri Lanka to come in the Super Sixes stage, these could prove vital in boosting their qualification chances – the top two teams from the Super Sixes book their passage to India for the World Cup.West Indies and Netherlands, the other two teams that are through to the Super Sixes from this group, will now battle to carry over two vital points themselves when they meet on Monday.WI fined for slow over-rate

The entire West Indies playing XI have been fined 60% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against Zimbabwe. They were found to be three overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

Players are fined 20% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. Match Referee Muhammad Javed imposed the sanctions.

The stats from today will show that Sikandar Raza was yet again Player of the Match, picking up two wickets to go with his 58-ball 68. It will show that the under-fire Tendai Chatara with figures was 3 for 52 was the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers. And it will show Alzarri Joseph with an inconsequential 2 for 42. But this a game that took place within the margins. It all began rather cagily, with Zimbabwe put into bat on a good batting track but one that was expected to provide some early movement for the seamers. The West Indies seamers, particularly Joseph, exploited the favourable conditions expertly, deriving extra bounce off a good length and moving the ball in the air and off the surface. While it wasn’t exactly an overcast morning in Harare, it nevertheless brought out the more cautious side of openers Joylord Gumbie and Craig Ervine. By the end of the 10th over they had reached just 37.Roston Chase chops one onto his stumps•ICC/Getty Images

West Indies were playing the part in the field too, hurrying behind every lost cause and throwing themselves around to gain any edge. The pressure eventually would tell midway through the 15th over, when Ervine would chip an attempted loft straight to mid-on. But the chance would be spilled – a theme that would recur throughout the innings.Ervine would eventually fall for 47, but that was 22 extra runs from the point he was dropped. These extra runs would add up. The most egregious missed opportunities though would come off Raza, who was dropped on 1 and 7 off Joseph on the way to what would be a match-winning 68. Ryan Burl would be the other batter to enjoy a second life, being grassed on 39 on his way a fifth ODI fifty. For West Indies, these would be particularly disappointing in that even discounting these missed chances, their bowling was so effective Zimbabwe were still limited to a subpar 268 – a score Ervine and Raza conceded was about 30 runs short of what they would have liked. The final 10 overs of Zimbabwe’s innings went for 75 runs, 25 of which came courtesy a streaky last-wicket stand between Chatara and Blessing Muzarabani. That partnership though highlighted the spirit in which Zimbabwe played this game, as the crowd cheered every run and every extra like it were a boundary. It was this momentum that was carried over into Zimbabwe’s fielding effort, where despite a rollicking start from the West Indies openers – they put on 43 in 6.3 overs – the hosts managed to reel it back, picking up two quick wickets, and then stringing together a period of such sustained pressure that they strung together 16 straight dot deliveries.Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza console Akeal Hosein•ICC/Getty Images

All the while, the crowd was amping up, never losing hope. Not even when Kyle Mayers broke loose and struck Muzarabani for a hat-trick of boundaries, nor when his partnership with Shai Hope was reaching threatening levels. And especially not when Mayers holed out at long-off.For a brief period Hope and Nicholas Pooran looked threatening in a 24-run stand, but then Hope was castled by Raza. Pooran then strung together 41 with Roston Chase, inclusive of some monster hits down the ground, but then Richard Ngarava returned to trap him leg before with a dipping inswinger on middle and leg. Was it going down leg? Perhaps. But there was no DRS for it to matter. In a game of such fine margins, it was scarcely out of place. And this would continue to be the pattern of the game. West Indies would chip away, threaten to pull clear, and Zimbabwe would reel them back. The crowd raised their tempo throughout; with each subsequent wicket it would get louder, until eventually the West Indies batters were gradually worn down. When nudging it around and singles would have sufficed, Keemo Paul would be trapped lbw looking to reverse-sweep. Jason Holder, having put together 37 with Roston Chase, would fish outside the off stump and edge through to the keeper. Chase would be the penultimate man to fall, chopping on trying to cut one that was too close to cut. The last would be Joseph, the man who had had so many chances put down, flicking low and hard straight to a catching midwicket, with none other than Raza stationed there.Should West Indies miss out on the big prize – that spot in the 2023 World Cup – it’s a game they will look back on and wonder how it came to be. And so, indeed, might Zimbabwe.

Nissanka, Asalanka and Hasaranga sizzle as Sri Lanka level series 1-1

Hridoy’s fighting unbeaten 96 in the first innings gave Bangladesh a total that looked solid at the halfway stage

Bangladesh fought to the end but the 185-run fourth-wicket partnership forged by Pathum Nissanka (114) and Charith Asalanka (91) proved enough in Chattogram, as Sri Lanka secured a narrow three-wicket win to level the series 1-1.Bangladesh’s fighting spirit brought the game close, but they were also aided by the indecision and doubt shown by the Sri Lankan batting unit. While the eventual margin of victory – three wickets and 17 balls to spare – suggests a relatively comfortable win, Sri Lanka had somehow got themselves into a position of clutching defeat from the jaws of victory when they briefly slid from 228 for 3 to 251 for 6.The wobble left them needing 36 off 53 with the last recognised pair of Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga at the crease. Bangladesh’s exceptional ground fielding combined with the pair’s reluctance to take risks meant the equation dropped down to 20 off 26.Related

Silverwood welcomes 'great rivalry' with Bangladesh: 'We need good competition'

But any lingering nerves were settled when Hasaranga finally took matters into his own hands to strike two sixes and a four in the space of five deliveries to kill the game. He fell with just two left to get, leaving Wellalage to secure the winning runs.Set a target of 287, Sri Lanka had fallen to 43 for 3 when Nissanka and Asalanka came together, and following an early period of fortune where some edges and mis-hits ended up safe, they set about their work.

While keeping the asking rate in check through their stand, Nissanka ended on a 113-ball 114 while Asalanka’s 91 came in 93 balls. Their dismissals within eight deliveries of each other weren’t ideal, but looking back, they had done enough. The Bangladesh fighting spirit that had forcibly made this into a contest was evident not just late in the evening, but also in the afternoon. After two innings of substance from Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto, it was Towhid Hridoy’s slow-burn innings and late onslaught that saw them hit back after Sri Lanka had set them on course for a far lower total than their final score.Hridoy, who had come into bat in the 13th over, ended unbeaten on 96 off 102, an innings and strike rate that belied the acceleration he provided at the death to boost an innings that looked in danger of losing steam. Along with Taskin Ahmed, whose cameo of 18 off 10 also provided excellent support, the pair put on 50 off just 23 deliveries as Bangladesh scored 80 off the final ten overs – 54 of which came in the final five.Towhid Hridoy made a stellar 96*•AFP/Getty Images

Before that, Hasaranga – who had gone wicketless last time out – had threatened to derail Bangladesh’s efforts by grabbing four wickets for 45 runs. Dilshan Madushanka also proved pivotal grabbing two wickets early on, and also completed a superb take in the deep to dismiss Sarkar. But worryingly for Sri Lanka (and perhaps even Mumbai Indians at the IPL), Madushanka walked off the field midway through his seventh over clutching his left hamstring.Indeed Madushanka was key to Sri Lanka’s early offence, removing Litton Das and the dangerous Shanto – who had twice earlier been reprieved, first by a dropped chance and the second time by Sri Lanka’s failure to review a caught behind – before providing the fielding moment of the game to dismiss Sarkar. After Sarkar had nailed a reverse sweep off Hasaranga destined for the ropes, Madushanka sprinted to his right and threw himself at the ball grabbing an incredible take with both hands in full flight. Sarkar stood there in disbelief, while the shouts of jubilation from Hasaranga provided insight into the pasting he had suffered at the hands of Sarkar in the lead-up.One scalp then brought two, as a moment of madness from Mahmudullah saw him charge Hasaranga and swing all around a googly to find himself stumped miles out. This meant Bangladesh had suddenly gone from 130 for 2 to 130 for 4, and Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim were thrust into a sticky situation, but they excelled with their 57-ball stand of 43.But just as Mushfiqur started to shift gears, Hasaranga struck once more. A tossed-up leg break on leg stump saw Mushfiqur miss a sweep, and the resulting appeal was both loud and long. But with umpire Masudur Rahman unmoved, Sri Lanka went for the review, which vindicated their excitement with three reds. When Hasaranga then dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz a couple of overs later, Bangladesh were suddenly in danger of floundering at the pivotal moment in their innings – much like Sri Lanka had two days earlier – but Tanzim Hasan Sakib in a 33-ball innings of 18 proved an able and stubborn deputy, holding up one end as Hridoy kept the scoreboard ticking over. Hridoy and Taskin imparted the final flourish to take Bangladesh to a competitive total, but unfortunately for the home side, it was not enough.

Mayank Yadav: I didn't think my debut would go that well

He cranked up the speed gun to as much as 155.8kph on IPL debut and took home the player of the match award

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Mar-20242:23

Rapidfire Review: The impact of Pooran the captain

It was a debut to remember for Mayank Yadav who cranked up the pace and tore through the Punjab Kings batting unit, to help Lucknow Super Giants record their first win of the season.Mayank picked up 3 for 27 in his four overs, and the Player-of-the-Match award, but it was his pace that had everyone stand up and take notice. He clocked 147kph on the speed gun with his first ball, and jacked it up to 155.8kph in his second over, the fastest ball in the IPL 2024, so far.Having dealt with some injury issues over the last year, the Delhi lad couldn’t have hoped for a better start to his IPL journey. “I didn’t really think it [my debut] would go that well. I have heard from the others that there can be nervousness on debut. But after the first ball, all my nervousness went away,” Mayank said at the post-match presentation. “Everyone said to not take too much pressure, just bowl on the stumps, and use the pace. That’s what I did.”

Mayank was the last of the six bowlers used by LSG but created the most impact after Kings had raced away to 102 for 0 in the 12th over chasing 200 in Lucknow. He was taken for two fours in his first over but came back to remove Jonny Bairstow with a 142kph back of a length ball that hurried the batter and had him caught at deep midwicket. The 21-year-old was then hit for a six by Prabhsimran Singh, but kept taking the aggressive option and found immediate reward, beating Prabhsimran for pace and inducing a top-edge that went only as far as mid-on. He accounted for Jitesh Sharma as well and Kings lost all of their momentum to finish on 178 for 5.”I thought I might need to use the slower ball, but there was help from the wicket, the captain [Nicholas Pooran] said to just go with the pace,” Mayank said. “The debut wicket was my favourite.”Related

Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan admitted he was surprised by the pace that Mayank generated, and agreed the fast bowler outsmarted his batters.”We started off quite well, and thought we could chase down the score easily but the new lad Mayank bowled really well. His pace outsmarted us and we ended up losing the game,” Dhawan said.”It was nice facing him. He surprised me that he was bowling that quick. As an experienced player, I knew I was going to use his pace rather than go against him. That was my strategy towards him, but even then, he bowled it quite smartly. He knew that I was ready for a bouncer and bowled me two yorkers.”Mayank was picked up by LSG for his base price of INR 20 lakh at the mega auction in 2022, but he has been laid low with injuries and had to wait until now to make his mark.”I had goals to debut at a young age, but then can’t do anything about the injuries,” he said.

Manager demanding club-record sale to let "monster" player join Fulham

Fulham could have to fork out one club’s record transfer sale to sign a “monster” defender this summer, with their manager personally making his demands clear behind-the-scenes.

Marco Silva previews Fulham clash with Liverpool

The Whites have an all-important, blockbuster clash to prepare for as Marco Silva’s side take on Premier League frontrunners Liverpool in their race for European qualification.

Liverpool have won their last four league games and have one hand on this year’s domestic crown. Arne Slot can take an almighty stride to confirming their status as champions of England against Fulham, but Silva will be equally determined to spoil the party with European football on the line.

Amid Tottenham’s interest in Silva to replace Ange Postecoglou, these last few games of the season could also serve as a Spurs audition for the 42-year-old if he’s open to that opportunity across London.

“It’s going to be a game that demands us to be close to perfection,” said Silva on Fulham’s clash with Liverpool.

“From our side, we need to fight really hard for the three points. We are in our own battle too. They want the three points to be closer to the title – we want our three points for our own battle.”

Silva adds that he’s expecting a response from his players after their last game, a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

“We share the good moments and the good vibes together,” said Silva.

“When you don’t achieve something important, like a football match we want to win, then you have to share the disappointment. But at the same time, we have to work quicker and prepare quicker for the next one – like we have done since the start of the season.”

Off the field, preparations for next season are already underway at Craven Cottage, with the west Londoners making transfer plans.

Fulham have made contact over signing Deportivo La Coruna sensation Yeremay Hernandez, according to TEAMtalk, and strengthening the wide area is seen as a key aim for the club.

Fulham told price for Elfsborg defender Terry Yegbe

Silva’s side also want to reinforce their defence, and have their keen eyes on Elfsborg defender Terry Yegbe.

The Ghana international was rumoured to command a price tag of £4.5 million, but according to news outlet Fotboll Direkt, the actual price for Yegbe stands at closer to £6 million.

While this wouldn’t exactly break the bank for a Premier League side like Fulham, it would apparently smash the record for most money paid for a centre-back from the Swedish Allsvenskan.

As per FD, Fulham are among the main contenders to sign Yegbe this summer, but the Elfsborg manager is personally demanding that a record sale figure of around £6 million to entertain letting the Ghanaian leave.

Yegbe, interestingly, carries a fearsome reputation in Scandanavia, having been called a “monster” defender.

“He is a monster on the field,” said former Elfsborg teammate Ahmed Qasem to Fotbollskanalen’s deadline day broadcast.

“He is too fast, strong and good with his feet. I think he will surprise many in the Allsvenskan.”

Celtic set to make major striker signing if they sell £3m star this summer

Celtic are well in the hunt for a domestic treble, but Brendan Rodgers will have big plans ahead of a summer window that could see some notable departures and reinforcements at Parkhead.

Celtic look to fight the current of recent inconsistent form

Despite the Bhoys’ lightning first half of the campaign, they find themselves on the end of rare criticism for recent performances following their 1-0 defeat to St Johnstone last weekend.

Brendan Rodgers shared his frustration at Celtic’s recent run of form, which has included two losses to Rangers, losing out at Hibernian and a draw away to Dundee in Scottish Premiership action.

Celticmanager BrendanRodgerscelebrates with the trophy after winning the League Cup

However, the landscape is still bright for the reigning champions, who could be mathematically confirmed as league winners this weekend by defeating Kilmarnock followed by Aberdeen recording a triumph over Rangers come Sunday lunchtime.

Admittedly, the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and several others have fallen a little short of what is required in recent times. It feels unfair to overly critique his performances, but his goal contribution downturn since firing Celtic into a 1-0 lead over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena has caught the attention of supporters.

Without a goal in his last ten Scottish Premiership matches, the former Germany Under-20 international is on a frustrating run that has increased calls for the inclusion of other stars in his place, albeit he is likely to remain a key part of Rodgers’ plans.

Nevertheless, the supremely talented attacker’s stock remains relatively high in the grand scheme of things, which could lead to interested suitors this summer on the market.

Should Celtic decide to cash in on Kuhn for a hefty profit from the £3m they spent on him, former Scotland international Michael Stewart has delivered a clear picture of what he reckons Rodgers will do to replenish squad depth across his front four positions.

Michael Stewart thinks Celtic will 'clearly' sign a striker and winger

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, Stewart has pointed out the fact he thinks Celtic will ‘clearly’ invest any profit on Kuhn into targeting a central striker or a ‘big name’ signing, potentially out wide too.

He stated: “If you look at the front three Celtic have at the moment, obviously there’s flexibility in there. Then you’ve got Idah and Yang as backup. They are clearly going to go and recruit a big name, or main, number nine striker.

“So if you’re selling one of the wide guys you could be signing a main striker and another winger and possibly still making a profit off that if you’re to sell Nicolas Kuhn at a good price.

“Celtic have shown over the years they are not frightened to sell one of their top assets at a good price and then reinvest, perhaps not all of it, but they’ve done well at then bringing in the next guy who’s gonna make them some money.”

It goes without saying, Celtic will need a striker this summer to help share the goalscoring burden moving forward. Maeda has hit 30 goals combined in his exploits out wide and through the middle, while Idah has added another 14 despite sometimes having to be content with a role from the bench.

Either way, there is a need for the Bhoys to splash out after losing Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes in January. The Japan forward has hardly featured since moving to France, but his influence has been missed at times during the second half of the campaign.

Imagine him & Gyokeres: Arsenal leading the race to sign £50m sensation

After last night’s huge Champions League triumph, Arsenal have demonstrated that they are capable of beating Europe’s elite, a signal as to how far they’ve developed in recent years.

Mikel Arteta deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the work he’s done in rebuilding the side over the last five years, with all his work leading up to the win over Real Madrid.

After such a display at the Santiago Bernabéu, supporters will undoubtedly be hugely confident that the side can go all the way and claim their first European title come the end of the campaign.

However, with the summer transfer window approaching, decisions will need to be made on the futures of numerous players currently plying their trade at the Emirates.

Signings will need to be made to continue the rebuild, potentially allowing the Gunners to compete with Europe’s elite on a consistent basis for many years to come.

The latest update on Arsenal’s hunt for summer signings

Over the last couple of days, links to Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres have rapidly developed, with Arsenal just one of the sides in the race to land his signature this summer.

Reports earlier this week claimed that Gunners sporting director Andra Berta has already held talks with his representatives over a move to North London ahead of the window opening.

It’s also been reported that the Swedish international is keen on a move to join Arteta’s side, with a £60m fee mooted to land the talisman, who’s netted 87 times in the last two seasons.

Any deal for the 26-year-old would see the side finally land the focal point they’ve desperately lacked, but he could be joined in the final third by Spanish winger Nico Williams.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have pulled out of the race, leaving Arsenal as the favourites to trigger his £50m release clause in the coming months.

Why Gyokeres would star at Arsenal along with £50m star

Given his goalscoring record in the Liga Portugal over the last couple of seasons, it’s no secret that Arsenal would be getting themselves a proven goalscorer who would take the side to the next level.

However, there’s only so much a striker can do on his own, often relying on the creativity of players around him to produce the goods to allow them to thrive.

Injuries have massively plagued Arteta’s side in the final third throughout 2024/25, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus all missing large chunks of the campaign.

Depth is desperately needed this summer, with a potential partnership of Gyokeres and Williams alongside Saka one to be feared by sides across the Premier League.

The Spaniard has all the tools to provide the Swede within the final third, with his stats from LaLiga demonstrating the quality he possesses with the ball at his feet.

The 22-year-old, who’s been labelled “world-class” by Ben Mattinson, has registered five assists this season, but his underlying stats showcase how much of a threat he is in the final third.

Williams has notched a total of three successful take-ons and 5.3 progressive carries per 90, undoubtedly at his best when marauding forward with the ball at his feet.

He’s also registered 1.9 key passes and 5.1 crosses completed per 90, with both of his respective tallies providing Gyokeres with ammunition to score within the final third.

The Spaniard’s talent doesn’t stop there, achieving 5.2 shot-creating actions and 3.2 progressive passes per 90, once again highlighting the talent he boasts to provide opportunities for those around him.

Whilst the pair would likely set the Gunners hierarchy back around £110m this summer, it’s a bargain price given the elite-level talents they would be signing.

The prospect of the pair linking up at the Emirates is a hugely exciting one, with the pair having the skillset to push the club closer to ending their two-decade wait for a league title.

Amorim's next Gyokeres: Man Utd hold talks to sign "unplayable" £70m star

For the 13th time in the Premier League this season, Manchester United played out a full 90-minute match without getting on the scoresheet, having slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

Pablo Sarabia’s 77th-minute free-kick was a rare moment of quality in a largely lifeless affair at Old Trafford, albeit with the hosts likely to feel they should have walked away with all three points.

Indeed, Rasmus Hojlund notably came agonisingly close to getting on the end of Alejandro Garnacho’s driven cross, while both Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount also produced wayward attempts after being expertly picked out by the Argentine winger.

Even an inch-perfect, outside of the boot cross from Christian Eriksen could not be capitalised on by Mount, with the £55m Englishman still having scored just once since his arrival back in the summer of 2023.

Hojlund too has netted only three league goals in 2024/25 to date, a grim return for any leading number nine, with Ruben Amorim likely to be tearing his hair out at his side’s frustrating profligacy.

Cunha, Delap, Amorim

Having gone from seeing Viktor Gyokeres dazzle under his watch, the Portuguese coach is now in desperate need of a new attacking figurehead.

Latest on Man Utd's search for a forward

All of the talk at present is centred around United’s apparent progressing interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers talisman, Matheus Cunha, with it looking likely that the club will trigger the Brazilian’s £62.5m release clause, amid positive talks over his potential contract in Manchester.

Cunha stats

The 14-goal marksman may not be the only Premier League talent to arrive at the Theatre of Dreams this summer, however, with the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones – who outlined that an agreement regarding Cunha is inching closer – also naming a raft of high-profile stars who are under consideration.

Indeed, according to Jones, among those to have made the INEOS shortlist is Bournemouth man, Antoine Semenyo, with the Red Devils already said to have held talks over signing the Ghanaian forward.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

This follows prior reports which outlined that United are actually frontrunners in the race for the 25-year-old’s signature, albeit with it yet to be seen if Amorim and co will be willing or able to match the Cherries’ £70m price tag.

A versatile asset who can operate on the flanks or in a central role, Semenyo could represent the perfect addition to bolster Amorim’s forward line, with the potential their for the 40-year-old to morph him into his new Gyokeres-esque talisman.

Why Man Utd could be targeting Amorim's new Gyokeres

As outlined by journalist Mark Ogden, it has been a remarkable rise for the Sporting CP sensation in recent times, having gone from being sold for just £1m by then-Brighton and Hove Albion director, Dan Ashworth, back in 2021, to now standing aloft as the “hottest striker in Europe”.

Indeed, the 6 foot 2 Swede failed to actually make a league appearance for the Seagulls, while enduring a handful of less than spectacular loan spells away from the Amex – having notably scored just five goals in 2020/21 for the likes of Swansea City and Coventry City.

That steady rise only truly ignited following Gyokeres’ permanent switch to Coventry at the end of that campaign, as he went on to score 38 times in the Championship over the next two seasons.

Since moving to Lisbon on a £17m deal in 2023, the 26-year-old has soared even higher, bagging 90 goals in just 96 games – 66 of which came in just 68 outings under Amorim’s watch.

That journey from EFL struggler to elite-level monster is one which Semenyo certainly knows well, with the London-born ace having started out on the books at Bristol City, while also taking on loan moves at the likes of Bath City, Newport County and Sunderland.

The 6 foot 1 star memorably failed to score during that limp stint at the Stadium of Light, while actually only scoring 21 times in 121 games back at Ashton Gate – albeit while plundering a further 21 assists.

Like Gyokeres, however, it has taken the step up from the second tier for Semenyo to truly flourish, having now scored 16 Premier League goals since the start of 2023/24, while contributing a further eight assists.

Like Gyokeres too, what also stands out regarding the in-demand talent is just what a powerful presence he is in the final third, having been hailed as “almost unplayable” at times by journalist Ed Aarons.

Interestingly too, the pair were deemed to be similar players among their peers during the 2022/23 season in the Championship, as per FBref, with Semenyo having largely been operating in a central role at the time.

That likeness bodes well for the impact that the two-footed Ghana star can make under Amorim, with the £70m man representing the type of ready-made Premier League talent who can breathe new life into United’s misfiring attacking unit.

After years of scouring the Eredivisie, in particular, for new signings, now could well be the time to look a little closer to home…
