Steven Smith looked in prime form in the first ODI•AFP
A buoyant Steven Smith has proudly announced his superb one-day innings against England was the best he has felt batting in six years. The bold claim from one of the country’s greatest batters will strike fear into West Indies and South Africa ahead of the Australian Test summer.Smith belted an unbeaten 80 from 78 balls at Adelaide Oval on Thursday to help Australia secure a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against world champions England.”[It] was probably the best I’ve felt in about six years,” Smith told reporters. “I was just in really nice positions and I felt really good, I honestly haven’t felt that way in six years or so. It’s been nice to score some runs in that time and we’re always looking for perfection, and for me yesterday was as close to perfection as I will get.”Smith credits a year-long process to help rediscover his best stance and technique which now sees him not taking the pronounced jump across the crease and staying more side-on to the ball.He scored a century in his previous ODI innings, against New Zealand in September, but said that his latest effort felt a world away.”[It was] much better yesterday,” he said. “In Cairns on a slow wicket I still felt a little bit rushed and wasn’t quite happy with the positions I was getting in whereas yesterday I just felt, a couple of the cover drives I hit, I know I’m batting really well when I’ve got my weight going through the ball.”Smith was left out of all but one game during the recent T20 World Cup campaign but in ODI cricket has been able to retain a remarkable record. Since returning from his ban at the 2019 ODI World Cup, he has averaged 54.84 in ODIs, which goes up to an even more impressive 66.13 since the start of 2020.The six-year timeframe mentioned by Smith since he last felt so good at the crease includes his remarkable 2019 Ashes in England where he averaged 110.57. And over the last six years, since 2016, he has averaged 61.77. However, for his lofty standards, Smith has experienced a lean period in the Test arena with just two centuries since the 2019 Ashes.”I’ve been working on a few things, it’s almost been a six-month or 12-month process,” Smith said. “The start of last summer, I tried to get my hands back to where they were in 2015.”I feel like I’m staying a bit more side-on now and I’ve got my feet and hands in sync together. [Thursday] was probably the first time I’ve actually had extended time in the middle with that change.”It’s hard to base something on one innings but it felt as though things clicked for me like they did at the WACA in 2013. Hopefully it’s the start of a big summer.”Smith is averaging 60.00 from 87 Tests with 28 centuries ahead of a jam-packed 12 months for Australian cricket. After two Tests against West Indies and a three-match series with South Africa, Australia will head to India in February to battle for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. If they gain enough points in those series there will be a World Test Championship final in early June before the Ashes series in England.

Sheffield United showed in the transfer window that has just slammed shut that they are willing to fork out excessive wads of cash in order to try and win an instant promotion back up to the Premier League.
After all, landing Tom Cannon for £10m would have dented the Bramall Lane bank account significantly, but will be viewed as a risk worth taking to give Chris Wilder’s men somewhat of an edge in the ongoing Championship promotion race.
Tom Cannon in action for Sheffield United
Those in South Yorkshire will just hope Cannon doesn’t go down as an excessive waste of money if he can’t live up to his previous Stoke City best, with Rhian Brewster a lavish buy in the striker department that certainly hasn’t gone to plan.
Rhian Brewster's struggles at Sheffield United
If Cannon’s £10m valuation is considered jaw-dropping now, plenty of eyebrows must have been raised when Liverpool youngster Brewster joined the Bramall Lane ranks for a weighty £23.5m in 2020.
The Reds sensation had fired home an impressive 13 strikes in the U21 ranks at the Anfield giants before taking the leap to join Wilder’s camp, but it’s fair to say he hasn’t lived up to his bumper price tag donning a Blades strip.
Frustratingly, Brewster has only managed to find the back of the net seven times across 106 United appearances, with two of those even coming about just this campaign.

But, the 24-year-old has been through the wars when it comes to injury troubles since his statement move took place, resulting in Brewster missing a mammoth 99 games across four seasons just by being in the treatment room.
The ex-England U21 international will just be thankful for the patience his side have shown in him, but there will no doubt be a lot of regrets still that United didn’t use the Brewster cash more wisely to pick up an alternative striker, who the Blades were linked with around the same time the injury-prone number seven joined.

The £60m attacker Sheffield United could have signed instead
Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course, with many hopeful that Brewster would kick on and become a great in the United first-team fold after his promising beginnings at Liverpool.
However, that hasn’t come to be, whilst another target around this time in Ollie Watkins has solidified himself as a feared Premier League sharpshooter with Aston Villa.
Reports suggested in August 2020 that United were one of three clubs looking at Watkins before his big £25m move to Villa Park materialised, with Crystal Palace the other outfit allegedly keeping tabs on the-then promising Brentford centre-forward.
For just £2m more than Brewster’s steep £23m valuation, the Blades could have won themselves a far better deal instead of falling victim to a costly blunder, as Watkins continues to go from strength to strength under Unai Emery on some pressurised stages.

At the time of writing, the former Bees man has a bumper 82 goals next to his name donning Villa claret and blue, with all-time Premier League top goalscorer Alan Shearer even going on to laud the 29-year-old as “sensational”.
It has been quite the meteoric rise for the centre forward since his humble days at Brentford, with the 5 foot 11 star now a recognised senior England international off the back of his exploits in the West Midlands, on top of also being valued at £60m amid interest from Arsenal this winter.
Brewster was tipped for similarly lofty heights – having once been labelled as a “natural finisher” by Jurgen Klopp – but the Blades flop will have just tunnel vision at this moment in time surrounding his second-tier employers winning promotion.

Arsenal could close that margin to eight points with their game in hand, but it would arguably take a miracle for Arteta’s side to catch Liverpool in the race now, considering the Merseysiders’ excellent form all season, and the fact we’re now at the business end of the Premier League campaign.

The north Londoners have been hamstrung by injuries to key attacking players recently, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli unavailable until March, while both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are out for the rest of this season.
Arsenal's KaiHavertzreacts
Arteta could be ruing their missed chance to bring in a top-class forward in the January transfer window as a result, with Arsenal having a low-ball £40 million offer for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins rejected last month (David Ornstein).
Various reports have claimed that Arsenal are targeting a new forward this summer instead, and many high-profile names are being linked at the moment, including Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Juventus forward Dušan Vlahović, Sporting CP number nine Viktor Gyokeres, Eintracht Frankfurt ace Hugo Ekitiké and even ex-Liverpool talisman Roberto Firmino.
Arteta also reportedly wants an alternative to Saka and Martinelli out wide. Indeed, an intriguing name to look out for in this regard is Borussia Dortmund sensation Jamie Gittens.
Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in action
The Englishman, formerly of Chelsea and Man City’s academies, has impressed since moving to the Bundesliga for first-team football. This season, Gittens boasts 11 goals and four assists in all competitions, which has attracted interest from the Premier League’s elite.
Borussia Dortmund tell Arsenal target Jamie Gittens he's free to leave
According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Arteta could be free to make a move for the 20-year-old this summer, as Dortmund give the green-light to a potential sale.
As per their information, Dortmund have informed Gittens that they will allow him to leave, and Arsenal could emerge as favourites to secure his signature – ahead of English rival quartet Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
A return to his homeland also holds appeal to Gittens, with Dortmund setting his price tag at around £70 million.
This comes as another bit of good news for Arsenal, considering other reports suggested Gittens’ price tag was closer to £83 million. The left-winger’s form has been praised by those close to him, with ex-Dortmund head coach Nuri Şahin branding him an “incredible” one-v-one forward.

Sam Elliott became the third player subbed out of the match for the home side

New South Wales made a strong start to their run chase in a dramatic Sheffield Shield match where a combination of injury and illness have forced Victoria to field 14 players.Victoria had to call on debutant Jack Prestwidge as an emergency substitute after second-gamer Sam Elliott was ruled out under concussion rules late on day three.Elliott was hit in the helmet grill and carried on at Junction Oval on Saturday, but asked for painkillers about an hour later and was retired by umpires to undergo a concussion assessment. He protested with Cricket Australia’s medical staff before failing the test.Victoria had already lost Sam Harper and Jon Holland because of positive Covid-19 results the previous day and could not call in a replacement for tail-ender Elliott before losing their ninth and ultimately final wicket leaving NSW a target of 233 runs to win.Offspinner Todd Murphy made the only breakthrough for Victoria when he trapped NSW captain Kurtis Patterson lbw, and had another big shout against Jason Sangha turned down. Sangha rubbed salt in the wound when he whacked the next ball to the boundary.Prestwidge was hastily presented with his Victoria cap before entering the fray for his maiden first-class appearance in the fourth innings of the match. He had made a late dash to the ground from the other side of Melbourne, where he had been on club cricket duties.”It’s been crazy at times,” Victorian batsman Campbell Kellaway said. “There’s been blokes coming in and blokes going out, but I’m just trying to keep myself on the park.”Everyone who’s stepped up has played a role and everyone’s been ready to go and if required they’ve done a job for the team, which has been awesome. I think [Elliott] is feeling alright…he was smacking them out there so it was a shame he had to come off, but obviously you’ve got to look out for his best interests.”Victoria had second-gamer Kellaway to thank for pushing their lead beyond 200. The 20-year-old scored a team-high 81, including 13 boundaries, in an impressive batting display after Victoria’s top order crumbled. Both sides are fighting for their first Shield win of the season in what is the first game for the last-placed Blues under caretaker coach Greg Shipperd, after Phil Jaques was axed earlier in the week.
What a rise to the top it has been for Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo. Although he is out injured at the moment, the Stockport-born midfield sensation has become a key player for his boyhood club so far, under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
He has already made an impressive number of first-team appearances in that famous Red shirt. Mainoo has featured 60 times for United so far, scoring six goals and grabbing two assists from midfield in that time.
The 19-year-old rose to superstardom last season when he made his first Premier League start against Everton and completely ran the show in midfield.
Mainoo’s debut vs Everton
There have been few midfielders players, particularly ones aged just 18, who have made a bigger impression than Mainoo on their first Premier League start. He was thrust into the United midfield after months out injured, and just two appearances for the academy to regain full fitness.
Manchester United midfielder Mainoo.
United fan, analyst, and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown, H, summed up the Englishman’s performance that day. He described the youngster as “elegant” and “relaxed”, calling it a “seriously good performance” on his full debut.
The youngster was so composed that day, showing his impressive ability to carry through the opposition’s press and how hard he worked off the ball. It was an eye-catching and dominant showing from someone who was, in reality, quite inexperienced.
The stats on Sofascore from Mainoo’s full debut show just how well he played. The United number 37 had 61 touches of the ball, completing 83% of his passes. Off the ball, he won an impressive five from eight duels.
Kobbie Mainoo
Sadly, given his injury, Amorim will not have the option of calling upon Mainoo for United’s trip to Goodison Park this weekend. However, he could make the bold decision of starting another exciting young midfielder who could have a similar rise to the top in a United shirt.
The academy midfielder who could start vs. Everton
Amorim had to call upon several young academy stars last weekend against Tottenham Hotspur, due to United’s injury crisis. Only one of those, Chido Obi, got the chance to feature, but there were several exciting talents on the bench.
One of those youngsters was Sekou Kone. The 19-year-old Malian midfielder joined the club over the summer, in a deal that was reportedly worth £1m. United beat Premier League rivals Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers to the signing.
So far, Kone has not had much of a chance to showcase his ability. Injuries have affected him this term, meaning he has played just six times for the Red Devils academy. However, he is clearly rated highly enough for Amorim to include him on the bench last weekend.
Kone really made waves at the under-17 World Cup for Mali at the end of 2023. He helped his side to a third-place finish, beating Argentina in the third-place playoff match. His stats from the game were extraordinary. As per Sofascore, he won 15 out of 20 duels, created three chances, and registered an assist.

With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that football scout Antonio Mango thinks Kone could “be a beast”. He ran the midfield in the under-17 World Cup, and perhaps he deserves the chance against Everton, to show what he can do in senior football.
One man who Kone could replace in the middle of the park is Casemiro. The experienced Brazilian made his first start of 2025 against Spurs but struggled to impose himself on the game, with the opposition coasting around him at times.
He received a 4/10 post-match rating from The Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst. The United writer said the former Real Madrid star looked “constantly off the pace” against the Lilywhites.
Perhaps taking a punt on Kone is a risk worth taking for Amorim. Casemiro struggled and seems destined to leave the club, with reports at the end of January hinting at a move away from Old Trafford.
The Malian would be an investment to the future, and Goodison Park seems to be the place talented young midfielders break into the United first-team. Perhaps Kone could become the second coming of Mainoo in that sense.

Kraigg Brathwaite leaps in celebration•Getty Images
Captain Kraigg Brathwaite scored his 11th Test century to defy an Australian attack without Pat Cummins as a gutsy West Indies pushed the first Test into a fifth day.Needing a record 498 runs for victory or – more realistically – to bat through 154 overs to draw, Brathwaite superbly batted through the final two sessions of day four to provide hope for the injury-hit tourists. But West Indies’ chances of starving off defeat in the series opener still appear unlikely even amid the uncertainty over Cummins, who did not bowl after experiencing quadricep soreness/ He returned to the field in the final session and appeared to be moving around without obvious discomfort. An assessment tomorrow morning will determine whether Cummins can bowl on the fifth day.Related

He reached a deserved ton just before stumps but will likely need to bat for the long haul on day five to thwart Australia’s bid for victory.Brathwaite passed 5000 Test runs with a gorgeous drive down the ground to capitalise on the unavailability of Cummins, who had starred in West Indies’ first innings to claim his 200th Test wicket.Former skipper Steve Smith took the captaincy reins during Cummins’s absence as Australia failed to make inroads against Brathwaite and debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who batted mostly untroubled through the entire second session. Chanderpaul scored just three runs off his first 36 balls in an effective rearguard alongside a fluent Brathwaite.Nathan Lyon removed Shamarh Brooks•AFP
For a spark, Smith even resorted to Marnus Labuschagne who bowled medium pacers instead of his usual legspin but it didn’t do the trick. But the return of Cummins, even though he couldn’t bowl, was surely a tonic for Australia as quick Mitchell Starc finally provided the breakthrough when Chanderpaul chopped on to end an impressive Test debut with scores of 51 and 45.Starc made amends after dropping Chanderpaul moments earlier on the boundary with Australia’s frustration underlined by Cameron Green punching the ground having missed out on a wicket.Australia’s mood brightened when Lyon picked up Shamarh Brooks, who as the concussion substitute had batted well against the odds in the first innings but fell cheaply second time around after edging to slip.Australia hoped to tear through West Indies amid the ground’s increasing shadows but Jermaine Blackwood successfully reviewed a lbw decision off Josh Hazlewood. Australia had earlier declared their second innings at lunch after Labuschagne added a ton to his first innings double century. Labuschagne rode some luck to become just the third Australia batter after Greg Chappell and Doug Walters to score a double century and century in the same Test.Labuschagne made 308 runs for the match to continue a personal run spree at Optus Stadium after he scored 143 and 50 against New Zealand three years ago in the last Test played at the ground.Labuschagne received luck on his way to his ninth Test century when he top-edged to gully via his helmet but was reprieved by a no-ball from Alzarri Joseph amid a riveting battle. After receiving medical attention, Labuschagne continued on his merry way and passed 2000 Test runs in Australia in his 31st innings. Only Sir Don Bradman (19 in England and 26 in Australia), and Sir Garfield Sobers (29 in West Indies) have achieved the milestone in a country faster.David Warner, however, missed a golden opportunity to end a three-year Test drought when he fell for 48, while Green didn’t bat in the match in his debut Test at home.West Indies’ shorthanded attack was unable to limit Australia with spearhead Kemar Roach forced off after injuring his left thigh, while seamer Kyle Mayers did not bowl in the innings due to a strain in his right teres major muscle.Adding to their woes, top-order batter Nkrumah Bonner was on day three substituted out of the match with concussion after being hit in the back of the helmet from a Green short delivery. But the beleaguered tourists reached the final day and their hopes rested on their gritty skipper.
