Santner and Neesham play decisive roles as New Zealand open with 13-run victory

Odean Smith’s all-round showing was not enough for West Indies who fell short again

A solid innings of 47 by returning captain Kane Williamson and a dashing 33 from 15 balls by Jimmy Neesham propelled New Zealand to a 13-run win over West Indies in the first of three T20Is in Jamaica.Neesham struck three fours from the last three balls and 23 runs from the last over of the innings as New Zealand made 185 for 5 after being sent in to bat at Sabina Park. Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner took 3 for 19 as New Zealand restricted West Indies to 172 for 7.”There was a lot of spin which was a big surprise,” said Santner, who was voted the Player of the Match. “I think the lengths are key against these guys. They can hit you pretty far, so back of a length worked today and as a unit we were able to pick up wickets which was pretty key.”New Zealand’s innings had two parts, separated by a lengthy rain break. Openers Martin Guptill and Devon Conway gave the tourists a strong start, putting on 62. But the pair fell to consecutive deliveries from Odean Smith, who went on to take career-best T20I figures of 3 for 32.Guptill fell to a brilliant one-handed catch by Shimron Hetmyer, who was backed up against the boundary at deep point, while Conway’s innings of 43 from 29 ended when he top-edged a catch to wicketkeeper Devon Thomas. The rain came in the 12th over with New Zealand on 95 for 2 and Williamson at the crease with Glenn Phillips. Players were off the field for almost two hours and when play resumed New Zealand immediately lost Phillips for 17.The New Zealand innings briefly lost momentum but Williamson re-established the impetus of the innings by taking 33 runs from his next 18 deliveries. He finally was out to another brilliant catch on the boundary, this time from Hayden Walsh who dashed from midwicket to pocket a comfortable catch at speed.Neesham struck a six from the second ball of an over in which he also was dropped by Romario Shepherd from the bowling of Jason Holder. West Indies paid the price with Neesham’s three fours from the last three balls.”We want to get better as a group but in saying that I was happy with the performances,” West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran said. “Santner bowled very well and Ish [Sodhi] got away with a few. Scores above 175-180 are tricky for us. Unfortunately losing is contagious and we’re a losing side at the moment.”Shamarh Brooks anchored the top of the West Indies innings with 42 at almost a run a ball. But there was a lack of consistent momentum afterward. Pooran with 15 from eight balls, Holder with 25 from 19 and Rovman Powell with 18 from 12 all threatened to take control of the game but couldn’t carry on.Finally, Shepherd and Smith shared a 50 partnership from 23 balls for the eighth wicket to fan West Indies’ hopes. Shepherd struck an unbeaten 31 from 16 balls and Smith 27 from 12. But West Indies came to the last over needing 26 runs and the task proved too much.

O atleta ficou somente no banco nesta partida.

Matheus também foi um dos destaques corintianos na última edição da Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, no início desse ano. O meia foi titular em todos os jogos do clube alvinegro na competição e marcou dois gols.

Graeme Smith: 'You might be down to five or six nations that play Test cricket'

Former South Africa captain says CSA’s new T20 league will bring an investment that their game desperately needs

Firdose Moonda19-Aug-2022

Test cricket could be played by only five or six countries with competitive teams in the future, according to former South Africa captain Graeme Smith. Speaking on on day three of the first Test between South Africa and England at Lord’s, Smith, who is now Cricket South Africa’s T20 league commissioner, said he didn’t think South Africa “have any intent to not play Test cricket,” but that the format appears destined to shrink overall.”With Test cricket, it’s just iconic nations or the big cricketing nations that are contributing to Test cricket at the moment,” Smith said. “I think it’s fantastic especially under Virat Kohli that India really took Test cricket seriously. They lead the way with that. But as long as we’ve got competitive teams, you’re not going to have 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 competitive teams. You might only be down to five or six nations that play Test cricket at this level.”Smith’s comments came on the back of the ICC’s new FTP, according to which South Africa play fewer Tests in the next cycle (2023-2027) than the current one (2019-2023) and no three-Test series in the 2023-2025 World Test Championship (WTC).CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki explained that their calendar was constrained by their new T20 league and the financial implications of hosting Test cricket but understood there would be disappointment with their sparse fixture list. The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) were among the first to voice their frustration.”We are disappointed with the lack of Test cricket. For youngsters, it’s the optimum test of your cricket ability,” Andrew Breetze, SACA CEO told ESPNcricinfo. “With fewer Tests being played and more two-Test series, Test cricket is being diluted. If you look at what FICA and SACA have been saying for the last five years, we said that the ICC should take ownership of this by looking at how we balance bilateral cricket with T20 events and if they don’t do that we are going to see Test cricket being diminished by the non-big three. We are there. And that’s disappointing.”Related

CSA forfeits Australia ODIs to secure 'long-term sustainability of the game' in South Africa

Despite that, SACA and its members (South African domestic and international players) will throw their weight behind the new T20 league as they recognise the pivotal role it will play in keeping South African cricket sustainable. “We support the league. The league is critical for the survival of cricket in South Africa,” Breetzke said. “We’ve got three sources of revenue for cricket in South Africa – broadcast revenue, sponsorship and ICC revenue. Two of those are reducing, and because of that, we’ve got to find a source of revenue and that is the T20 league.”Broadcast revenue and sponsorships are the two streams that are shrinking, partly because of the state of the global game and economy and partly because of CSA’s recent administrative meltdown. “If you are not playing India enough, your broadcast revenue is down,” Breetzke said. “Sponsorship revenue is two-fold because we’re not playing as much and because of the last five years at CSA. No-one wants to get involved in our cricket and that’s the sad reality. There is a lot of work for CSA – and to give them credit they are doing it – to enhance the work of CSA and to get sponsors. That’s more critical than ever. The market has changed post Covid. You are not getting those 18-million-rand-a-year Standard Bank sponsorships. The market is more about short-term sponsorship deals, smaller sponsorship and more specific sponsorship. That’s where CSA have to up their game.”Graeme Smith: ‘I don’t think world cricket can afford South Africa or any one of the top nations to start fading away’•BCCI

The six teams in CSA’s new league have all been bought by IPL owners, a development that will inject unprecedented amounts of money into the country’s game. “It’s certainly going to be an investment into our game that South African cricket desperately needed,” Smith said. “The pressures on nations like New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa to stay financially sustainable to keep up with England, India, and the world game to stay competitive is hugely important. I don’t think world cricket can afford South Africa or any one of the top nations to start fading away.”Asked whether he thought there were any dangers to private ownership, Smith said he did not see any drawbacks. “Cricket South Africa is still the major shareholder in this league. The investment into the South African game is still going to happen. It’s not people coming in and taking cricket away from the federation. A big part of this private ownership is that these owners had to look at the grassroots programmes, development programmes and how they would impact that. Hopefully we’ll see a talent pool would really get stronger and stronger and benefit cricket across the board. We needed partners that were sustainable. They’re not looking to make a dollar early on, they were prepared to invest in South Africa and grow this opportunity with us. And I think the key difference for us is that the money will still flow back into the game.”Given all the promises of the new league, CSA has been willing to move other commitments aside, including future Test engagements and forfeiting World Cup Super League matches in Australia next January. Smith said it was a necessary sacrifice, which was actually a lot smaller than it may seem. “For four weeks of an entire year, the priority will be the league. I feel that if we hadn’t done this South African cricket could have probably lost eight to ten players to this UAE league,” he said. “People also look at those three ODIs wrong. Yes, South Africa hasn’t handled ODI cricket as well and it should never be in this position. But for South Africa to be in Australia out of their key part of the summer financially is a huge stress for them. It’s like asking England not to play during your summer. The commitment that South African cricket made to go for the three Test matches is good for the game. It’s something that won’t happen often.”South Africa will not travel to Australia for Tests at all in the next FTP, and overall they also play fewer ODIs than any of the other Full Members, and the third-lowest number of bilateral matches in total after Ireland and Zimbabwe. That number may increase after ongoing discussions with other members.Moseki said CSA were looking at ways to organise more ODIs before the 2027 World Cup but SACA hoped additional fixtures can also be secured before then. “It’s placed CSA in a position where they have to go out and negotiate additional white-ball matches,” Breetzke said. “If you look at that FTP and you look at areas there, there’s a negotiation for additional matches. Relationships are going to be critically important as to can we enhance that FTP with white-ball cricket.”

Chelsea in constant contact over move for £70m star keen to join Arsenal

Chelsea are now in constant contact over a potential move to sign another forward this month, however, the Blues target is keen to join rivals Arsenal.

Chelsea transfer latest

Chelsea are expected to be one of the Premier League’s busiest sides in the final days of the transfer window, with Enzo Maresca’s side still looking to do plenty of deals both in and out.

Trevoh Chalobah has returned from loan at Crystal Palace to help fill their gap in defence, but that could push Axel Disasi out of the club in the next few days, while Renato Veiga is on the verge of joining Juventus on loan and Ben Chilwell has been expected to leave all winter but is yet to depart.

Further forward, Carney Chukwuemeka is free to leave the club, while Cesare Casadei could also follow him with the Blues believed to be in talks to send the Italian back to Serie A permanently.

But it is in attack that most speculation has arisen this month. Christopher Nkunku is still seemingly open to an exit and Chelsea have been exploring opportunities to sign a new forward using the Frenchman as a makeweight, with his name mentioned in discussions to sign both Mathys Tel and also Alejandro Garnacho.

In the case of the former, it is reported that Tel is not considering Chelsea as a viable option this month despite not playing a minute in any of Bayern Munich’s last three outings.

Meanwhile, Garnacho could well be linked to Nkunku, with Manchester United interested in the Frenchman should the Argentine move to west London. Now though, the Blues are thought to be making a late move to try and beat Arsenal to one of their attacking targets.

Chelsea in constant contact with striker's agent

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Chelsea are “in constant contact” with the agent of RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko and could yet attempt to make a move this week.

Sesko’s future has been widely speculated about this month, but Leipzig boss Marco Rose insisted he plans to keep his striker at the club until at least the summer.

Asked about his plans to keep Sesko, Rose simply responded “Yes, that’s still the case!”. However, the forward, who has been dubbed a “special player” at Leipzig, remains in the headlines amid suggestions that he has a £70m price tag on his head as things stand.

He reportedly is keen on a move to Arsenal and has picked the Gunners as his next destination, but TEAMtalk suggest that Chelsea are doing their bit to convince him to move to west London instead, with the club “in constant contact with the agents” of Sesko, and having hosted them at Stamford Bridge recently.

It is added that “Chelsea are considering a bid for Sesko before the end of the January window” as they look to bolster their frontline, with Liam Delap another forward that they hold an interest in.

A deal seems unlikely though, with Sesko still having four and a half years left to run on his £92,000 a week deal in Leipzig and the German side unlikely to want to lose one of their key men this close to the transfer deadline. For all the same reasons that Arsenal are seemingly unlikely to land the Slovenian this month, Chelsea may have to wait until the summer.

Jhulan Goswami has finished her ODI career as the fifth-ranked bowler in the world. Even though she didn’t have a prolific series in England in terms of wickets, picking three in three games including two in the last one, she played her part in India’s series sweep by being the most economical bowler across the two sides, with an economy rate of 3.00 over 27 overs.Full rankings tables

As a result, Harmanpreet moved up four slots to No. 5, and Mandhana gained one spot to sixth. Renuka, meanwhile, was the most successful bowler across the two sides with eight strikes, and that took her up to No. 35, a rise of 35 places. For England, Sophie Ecclestone continued to top the bowlers’ table despite just three wickets in the series, and Kate Cross’ seven wickets gave her a jump of three spots to seventh, while Charlie Dean rose 13 places to 19th on the allrounders’ rankings.Elsewhere, West Indies went down 2-1 to New Zealand at home in an ODI series, but it wasn’t for want of trying on the part of their captain Hayley Matthews. Amelia Kerr, who topped the overall run-scorers’ chart for the series with 98 runs, also moved up, getting to fourth place on the list of allrounders. Matthews and Kerr also moved up on the table for bowlers – Matthews went up two places to sixth, while Kerr moved up four places to 11th even though she picked up just one wicket in the series. In T20Is, all the action was in Abu Dhabi, where the women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers were on. Bangladesh and Ireland qualified for the World Cup after finishing one and two, but two Thailand players – Natthakan Chantham and Nattaya Boochatham – gained the most on the rankings.Chantham scored 144 runs, which helped her go up two places to 14th, and Boochatham picked up eight wickets, which helped her move up one spot to No. 14 too. Zimbabwe’s Sharne Mayers also had a good tournament, scoring 137 runs, and that took her up 18 spots to 21st.

Wolves reach agreement to sign deadline-busting £17m+ Lemina replacement

Looking to beat the clock ahead of the deadline, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a midfielder who could replace Mario Lemina in a deal worth over £17m.

Wolves transfer news

Whether the headlines have named Axel Disasi, Kevin Danso or Coady, it’s been no secret that Wolves have been after another central defender ever since welcoming Emmanuel Agbadou at the beginning of the window. Up until the deadline, the Midlands club have faced more and more frustration, however, with Danso eventually choosing Tottenham Hotspur, Disasi seemingly closer to Aston Villa and Coady off the table.

In pursuit of Premier League survival, Vitor Pereira’s side have a matter of hours left until the window slams shut and they’re denied the chance to welcome what would be a crucial addition. It’s not just potential incomings taking place at Molineux either, with Mario Lemina also threatening to steal the headlines on the exit front and reportedly closing in on an exit to join Galatasaray.

As the former captain departs, he could yet finally make room for a fresh arrival though. According to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Wolves have now reached an agreement to sign Marshall Munetsi having initially opned talks with Stade de Reims in pursuit of the defender.

In a deal set to be worth over €20m (£17m), Wolves are reportedly confident that they’ll get the reinforcement that the so desperarely need. At 28 years old, the experienced Reims defender represents an option who should need little time to make his mark and develop into a viable option for Pereira in the remainder of his side’s campaign.

Munetsi can reunite with Agbadou

In one January swoop, Wolves could end the window with two players who already know each other well in Munetsi and Agbadou, who played together at Reims this season. Replacing Lemina at the same time, the 28-year-old will be looking to make an instant impact and build on what has been an impressive campaign at times.

As the stats show, Munetsi should also provide more of an attacking threat than Lemina in what should be a boost for Pereira’s side in the face of Jorgen Strand-Larsen’s recent injury.

The midfielder may not be the end of Wolves’ business just yet either, given their aforementioned need for another central defender. Just who that will be remains to be seen, however.

For now, the Midlands club are at least on course to welcome a much-needed replacement for Lemina as he heads to Galatasaray. All being well, Wolves will hope to have their new signing on show as soon as their next Premier League clash – a difficult trip to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool.
