86 touches: Wolves star has just given O’Neil a big selection headache

Wolves have drifted into the relegation zone after their 4-2 loss to Bournemouth this weekend, with Jorgen Strand-Larsen’s brace not proving to be enough.

Gary O’Neil’s side have now conceded 32 goals in 13 games this season in the Premier League, having the worst defensive record in the division.

Wolves concede 14.7 shots per 90 (the sixth most in the division) and are in serious need of a defensive change. One man who did impress at the back, was a familiar face, just in a different position.

Mario Lemina's performance in numbers

Despite shipping four goals during the course of the game, Mario Lemina had a solid game at the back, putting in a performance that may well give the manager selection headache.

The 31-year-old has played all over the pitch this season, being a natural midfielder, but also playing on the left and now as a central defender too. It was in that role where he stood out on Saturday, recovering from a sloppy start to regain his composure in the second half, notably making a vital tackle to prevent the scoreline from being even worse.

Lemina won three out of his five ground duels, won two of his five aerial duels, and made two last-man tackles. The Gabon international combined his defensive duel-winning qualities with his on-ball ability, making seven out of ten long balls and one key pass.

O’Neil could well be tempted to stick with Lemina in central defence, causing a selection dilemma for the Wolves manager on who should partner him.

Selection headache at the back

Wolves lost Max Kilman this summer, who joined West Ham for a fee of around £40m. Last campaign, Kilman made 44 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring two goals, providing one assist, contributing to eight clean sheets.

Yerson Mosquera is also unavailable through injury, suffering a cruciate ligament injury after Wolves’ 3-1 loss to Aston Villa. With KIlman gone, and Mosquera out, the two primary defenders who could partner Lemina in this new role are Dawson and Gomes, both of whom offer different things to the side.

Toti stands at 6 foot 2, is slightly more progressive on the ball than Dawson, and tries riskier progressive passes, having a slightly worse pass completion percentage, but finding more passes between the lines into the midfielders as a by-product.

On the other hand, Dawson is 34-years-old, but brings Premier League experience, and an important element of leadership to the backline, which is a vital factor to take into consideration, as Kilman, who left the club this summer, was the captain last season.

Considering Lemina has the on-ball qualities to take the primary ball-playing roles from Gomes, this could mean Dawson is the perfect Lemina partner, sweeping up behind him, making his defensive actions, winning aerial duels, and leading from the back, whilst Lemina has the license to be more aggressive in duels, and progress play with his passing ability.

Sri Lanka will now play the T20I series before the Tests•Sri Lanka Cricket

The BCCI has announced the revised dates and venues for Sri Lanka’s tour of India, which will comprise three T20Is and two Tests. The tour begins with the first T20I in Lucknow on February 24, with the other two being back-to-back matches in Dharamsala on February 26 and 27.This will be followed by the first Test in Mohali from March 4, before the tour concludes with a day-night Test in Bengaluru starting March 12. Both Tests will be a part of the second cycle of the World Test Championship.Originally, the tour was scheduled to begin with the T20I series followed by the Tests, but as reported by ESPNcricinfo earlier, the BCCI decided to change the sequence. This was done after SLC’s request to allow a smoother bubble-to-bubble transfer of their T20I squad, which will have concluded a series in Australia just four days ahead of the first T20I against India.Another change was in the venues. Initially, the first Test was to be played in Bengaluru and the second in Mohali, while the T20Is were to be held in Mohali, Dharamsala and Lucknow. Now ending the tour in Bengaluru facilitates the visiting Sri Lanka side with a direct flight to Colombo. This will only be India’s third day-night Test at home – they hosted Bangladesh in 2019 and England in 2021 – and their fourth overall, the same number as Sri Lanka. Both teams have won two and lost one of their three day-night Tests so far.

Knight emphasises 'fresh slate, fresh day, fresh game'

Australia may be riding an 11-match unbeaten streak, but England believe that won’t count for much in a World Cup final

Despite the whitewash in the recent Ashes, despite the loss in the league stage against Australia, and despite their contrasting runs to the World Cup final, England captain Heather Knight believes Sunday afternoon in Christchurch will be a “fresh slate, fresh day and a fresh game,” where both teams “go in as equals” to try and lift the trophy. As opposed to Australia’s domineering and unmatched march to the final with eight wins in the World Cup and 11 unbeaten ODIs this year, England have had to turn their fortunes around – big time – after starting 2022 with a winless tour of Australia across formats where they could not score 180 in any of the three ODIs. Their rut stretched into the World Cup too, where they lost three in a row.Since then, knowing they were facing a virtual knockout every single time, England won five in a row, including a 137-run victory over South Africa in the semi-final. Knight said there was no single moment where things just clicked into gear but it did help when the team realised that a lot of the stuff that was going wrong was within their control. Stuff like “fielding, bowling extras, poor shot selections”. So they could all be fixed, quickly.”The stage is set a little bit for us to write a remarkable story but like I’ve said previously, I think it’s a completely fresh slate,” Knight said a day before the final. “A fresh day, fresh game where both us and Australia will go in as equals and its who performs the most on the day, who deals with the pressure of a World Cup final and knowing what’s at stake. So yeah, it would be a great story [if we win] but we’re going to have to bring our best cricket to beat Australia who obviously are a very good side.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Yes, it’s obviously brilliant. To be in this position knowing where we were just a couple of weeks ago is remarkable. And it shows how things can change so quickly in sport. And just says a lot about the character in this group that we managed to obviously put ourselves in a position to be in a World Cup final and give us a chance to actually win that trophy. Remarkably proud of the group, proud of the staff that have been in the shift as well. So yeah, hopefully we can pay off all that hard work and all the lows I guess we’ve had over this trip and make winning if we do that even better.”Recalling the league stage loss to Australia, in which England very nearly chased down 311, Knight admitted they had to get better at finishing games off. She was, however, very pleased that her bowling attack has been picking up steam throughout the tournament, helped in part by adopting a “knockout mentality”.”I think, knowing the fact that we push them so close, I think is a really good sign,” Knight said of their rivalry with Australia. “I think in that first group game we pushed really hard, batted remarkably and actually I think our bowling’s starting to peak towards the back-end of the competition. I don’t think our bowling was quite on in that game, and the bowlers as a unit are working much better as a group now. So I don’t think it’s motivation [to do better]. I think it’s just remembering that we’re really not that far away from them. We obviously haven’t got the results against them recently. But on the day we definitely believe that we can beat them.”We’ve had that knockout mentality for a long time. It almost feels a little bit like another game. I’m sure there’d be nerves and dealing with that but the fact that we’ve been able to do that when we’ve been under pressure, it’s been very pleasing and hopefully we can do it against for one more win.”There is one variable in England’s favour on Sunday. Hagley Oval. The last time Australia played an ODI at the venue which is hosting the final, it was the year 2000. England, on the other hand, beat Pakistan here towards the end of the round-robin stage and knocked out South Africa here in the semi-final. They would have fond memories of another ODI victory in Christchurch last year as well, when Knight herself led the chase with an unbeaten 67.”Definitely, I think is a slight advantage, potentially,” Knight said. “We obviously know the conditions, we’ve played a few games here last year as well. We managed to play here before the World Cup. So yeah, we would definitely use that to our advantage, hopefully, it’s obviously going to be a fresh wicket, though. So both team have to assess quite quickly how it’s playing.”

Sunderland could sign "immense talent" in January after key decision made

Sunderland have received a boost in their pursuit of an “immense talent” ahead of the January transfer window, as he is set to be made available by his current club, according to a report.

Sunderland planning for January after impressive start

As we approach the half-way stage of the Championship season, it would be fair to say that Sunderland are faring very well, currently sitting fourth in the table, within touching distance of the automatic promotion places.

That said, if Régis Le Bris’ side are to go all the way and secure promotion back to the Premier League, the manager may need to strengthen his squad this winter, and reports have indicated the manager is planning to be very busy this January.

The Black Cats are willing to sanction the departures of Adil Aouchiche, Abdoullah Ba and Nazariy Rusyn in January in order to create space for new additions in the squad, with all three players finding it hard to get game time so far this season.

If Le Bris is able to get that trio off the books, there may be room for some exciting new arrivals, including Aston Villa forward Louie Barry, who has been impressing on loan at League One Stockport County this season.

Sunderland keen on Louie Barry

According to a report from The Sunday Mirror (via Sunderland News), Villa have now made the decision to recall Barry from his loan spell at Stockport in the New Year, before immediately sending him out on loan to a club in the Championship.

The Villans are keen for the forward to gain experience in the second tier, having now proven himself in League One, and there are a whole host of clubs lining up for his signature.

There is set to be a transfer battle between the Championship’s top clubs, with Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Burnley also named as potential suitors for the young loanee, who could help them secure promotion back to the top flight.

20 y/o Sunderland talent who’s "great to work with" could leave in January

Would this be the right decision by the Black Cats?

ByHenry Jackson Dec 14, 2024

The 21-year-old has developed significantly during his time with Stockport, helping them secure promotion with nine goals and four assists in 20 League Two games last term, before going on to prove himself as one of League One’s top players this season.

The Englishman is the top scorer in the third tier with 14 goals to his name, four more than his nearest rival, indicating that he could be ready to take the step up to the Championship this winter.

Having been lauded as an “immense talent” by members of the media, if the youngster is able to hit the ground running in the Championship, he could be decisive in the promotion race, meaning it is important that Sunderland win the race for his signature.

Man Utd gem who left for £0 is now outperforming Garnacho & Foden in the PL

Manchester United have struggled in recent years, failing to reach the heights the fanbase has expected them to after such heavy investment from the hierarchy.

The board have splashed over £600m on new additions under Erik ten Hag, with many failing to cut the grade required of a top-level Premier League talent.

As a result, they have been languishing outside the top four in recent seasons, extending their streak without a league title to a decade, leaving new boss Ruben Amorim tasked with ending such a drought.

Ruben Amorim

He’s made an okay start to life as Red Devils boss, winning just once out of his four matches in the league, losing each of the last two outings to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

It’s safe to say some players have failed to impress since his appointment, potentially putting their long-term futures at Old Trafford in huge jeopardy.

The Man United players who have failed to impress Amorim

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has produced some memorable moments so far this campaign, including a miraculous double save against Crystal Palace which was named the Premier League’s Save of the Month for September.

However, his last outing against Forest was undoubtedly his worst of the season, producing two errors that ultimately swung the game in the visitor’s favour.

He failed to keep out an effort from Morgan Gibbs-White, before misjudging an effort from Chris Wood which saw Nuno Espírito Santo’s side claim a two-goal lead.

Onana isn’t the only one to struggle in recent matches, with winger Alejandro Garnacho struggling to adapt to his new inside attacking role in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Since the 39-year-old’s appointment, has failed to score or assist in the Premier League – with his only effort coming in the Europa League against Bodo/Glimt.

The youngster has been dragged in each of the last two meetings before the hour mark, unable to make an impact – whilst failing to add to his tally of three goals and one assist in the league.

As a result, the club must rue their decision to release a certain Premier League star.

Former Man Utd academy gem has outperformed Garnacho

Midfielder Dwight McNeil was a part of United’s infamous Carrington academy, but he was released by the Red Devils at the age of 16 – subsequently joining Burnley.

He would make over 100 appearances for the Clarets before departing following relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2021/22 season, moving to Everton – allowing him to capture his best form in England’s top flight.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

McNeil has been the shining light in an underperforming Toffees side this campaign, scoring three times and registering three assists in the process – outperforming Garnacho with such figures.

He’s also completed more progressive passes and achieved more of his attempted take-ons, providing more of an all-round presence in the final third than the young Argentine.

Such is the nature of McNeil’s performances in 2024/25, he’s been compared to Manchester City star Phil Foden by FBref – a comparison that is certainly a huge statement given the youngsters’ stature in the game.

However, when delving into their respective stats to date, the Everton winger has bettered the England international in numerous key areas, showcasing how impressive he’s been in recent months.

Not only has the 25-year-old registered more combined goals and assists than the City forward, but he’s also notched a better shot-on-target rate and completed nearly two times more dribbles per 90.

Undoubtedly, it was a long time ago that the Red Devils parted ways with McNeil, but in the current day, letting him for nothing certainly appears to be something of a mistake.

Dwight McNeil

With January coming up, Amorim will likely want to bolster his ranks, but he could have already had himself a top-level talent had they kept hold of the current Premier League ace.

However, for the fanbase and the new boss, it will always remain a case of what could have been had they kept hold of the 25-year-old.
