West Indies have named uncapped opener Jeremy Solozano in a 15-man squad for their Test tour of Sri Lanka later this month. Allrounder Rahkeem Cornwall was also back in contention while veteran quick Shannon Gabriel was fit to return after a hamstring injury kept him out of the Pakistan series in August, but there was no place for opener Kieran Powell or fast bowler Alzarri Joseph.Solozano, a left-hander who played at the 2014 U19 World Cup and has represented West Indies A, made 74 off 216 balls in the second of two intra-squad “Best vs Best” matches in Antigua, with lead selector Roger Harper praising his “application, patience and composure”.Opener has been a problem position for West Indies in recent times. John Campbell was dropped after an extended spell as Kraigg Brathwaite’s partner at the top of the order, followed by a brief experiment with Shai Hope opening and then the latest international recall for Powell, who initially came in as a concussion replacement for Nkrumah Bonner against South Africa in June.”The Best v Best matches provided the opportunity for the players to spend some time in the middle honing their skills for this tour,” Harper said. “The aim was to simulate as much as possible, the conditions that the team will likely face in Sri Lanka, so it was good to see the batsmen spending time at the crease while putting some scores together and the bowlers looking to build pressure and create wicket-taking opportunities.West Indies tour of Sri Lanka

Nov 14-17 – warm-up match, Colombo

Nov 21-25 – 1st Test, Galle

Nov 29-Dec 3 – 2nd Test Galle

“Jeremy played for the West Indies A team in 2019 (against India A) with success and in the Best v Best matches he displayed a sense of application, patience, and composure, while looking very comfortable against both pace and spin which encouraged the panel to invest in him at this point.”The squad is well balanced, with good depth in all departments. The composition is very similar to the squad that brought us success in our last away tour to Bangladesh, with a few changes in personnel. There are a number of players who are familiar with Sri Lankan conditions and most of the others have good experience in the Indian sub-continent, so they know what to expect and are gearing themselves for it.”Veerasammy Permaul, who last played a Test in 2015, joins Cornwall and Jomel Warrican as the main spin options in the squad, with West Indies looking to repeat their success in Bangladesh earlier this year, where they won 2-0.The tourists will play a four-day warm-up match in Colombo before two World Test Championship fixtures against Sri Lanka at Galle.West Indies Test squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Jermaine Blackwood (vice-capt), Nkrumah Bonner, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Veerasammy Permaul, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Jeremy Solozano, Jomel Warrican

Amorim could have had his own Beckham at Man Utd, but Ten Hag sold him

Manchester United has been the home to numerous legendary talents over the years, many of which have captured the hearts of the supporters during their time at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo undoubtedly will have been the biggest name to many of the younger generation, scoring 145 times in 346 appearances during two separate spells for the Red Devils.

The Portuguese international enjoyed a largely more successful spell in the Premier League, earning him a £80m transfer to Real Madrid – a then world-record transfer fee.

Wayne Rooney was another talent who impressed in the North West, featuring for the club over a 13-year period – playing a huge part in the success that saw various Premier League triumphs.

The now 39-year-old still remains the club’s all-time leading goalscoring with his tally of 253 goals during his time at Old Trafford.

However, there was an iconic group of players who really set the ball rolling for success under Sir Alex Ferguson back in the 1990s.

David Beckham’s stats for Manchester United

Graduating as part of the Class of 92, midfielder David Beckham quickly impressed in the first-team setup at United, bringing a different dimension to the squad.

The Englishman wasn’t your ordinary midfielder at that time, with his technique and quality on the ball catching the eye and allowing him to stand out in the 90s.

He became infamous for his set-piece ability, often picking out the top corner from free-kicks or even laying the ball on a plate for a teammate to find the back of the net – playing a huge role in the various successes during that era.

Beckham would go on to make 390 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 85 times and registering 121 assists – including his sensational halfway-line strike against Wimbledon back in 1996.

However, he would subsequently leave Old Trafford in July 2003, joining European giants Real Madrid after a previous attempt by the club to offload him against his will.

Since his departure, there have been very few who can match his technique ability, but the Red Devils may have made a mistake in allowing one talent to depart given his similarities to the iconic fan favourite.

The man who Ten Hag may have sold too soon

Given the quality of young talent coming through the Carrington academy setup, former boss Erik ten Hag found it difficult to balance his big-money additions along with youth prospects.

This was demonstrated in the form of midfielder James Garner, with the academy graduate departing Old Trafford after multiple loan spells at Nottingham Forest under Steve Cooper.

After joining the Red Devils as an eight-year-old, he would only go on to make a total of seven first-team appearances, before joining Everton for just £9m back in the summer of 2022.

He’s impressed for the Toffees since his move making 66 appearances, featuring in a variety of positions such as a wide midfielder or even as a right-back, but has still impressed regardless of his role.

This season alone, the 23-year-old has won 80% of tackles he’s attempted whilst also winning 13 duels – showcasing that he can do both sides of the game and operate in a box-to-box role.

Former Manchester City ace Trevor Sinclair claimed that ‘James Garner’s deliveries remind me of David Beckham’s’ with his whip and dip causing the opposition countless problems.

Given the issues in the midfield of late with Casemiro’s lack of form along with Kobbie Mainoo’s injury concerns, Garner could’ve been of use to new boss Ruben Amorim after his appointment, but he won’t get to utilise him given his transfer away from Manchester.

It’s great to see an academy star excelling in the Premier League, but it must be a shame to see them doing so away from their boyhood club, with Garner potentially another who has slipped through their net.

Sangha's late onslaught lifts Thunder after being hit with Covid

Strikers’ lack of power hitting resulted in a sixth defeat in seven games; Sams shines with four wickets for Thunder

They won the Boost Point, but there was little else to cheer the Adelaide crowd up on an abject night for the Adelaide Strikers, who slumped to their sixth defeat in seven games. This one – a 22-run loss – came at the hands of a Sydney Thunder side ravaged by Covid-19-related absences, but Jason Sangha made up for all that with a blistering unbeaten 91 off 55 that powered them through to 187. That came despite something of a struggle in the first ten overs, in which they managed just 65, but a stunning onslaught that saw 79 come off the final five redressed the balance. The Strikers began positively enough but lacked the power hitting, both at the top and tail of the innings, to really threaten the target. As such, Thunder appeared to coast to victory almost by default, the bowlers maintaining their disciplines without needing to do anything remarkable. Chris Green did his thing, keeping it tight in the middle overs, while Daniel Sams chipped in with four wickets. At the 15-over mark, the Strikers were still a few runs ahead of Thunder at that stage, but despite the best efforts of Jonathan Wells – who finished with 46 off 25 – they ended up falling comfortably short.Sangha scorches StrikersUntil the final five overs of the innings, there was limited evidence Sangha would set a warm Adelaide evening alight. He’d managed 36 off 34 while Thunder stumbled along at a shade over seven, targeting 150-160 at best. But all that changed when Strikers captain Peter Siddle brought himself back on. Sangha greeted him with a boundary and two sixes off the next five balls, and as the gears shifted, something appeared to click for the 22-year-old. Those final five overs would see Thunder plunder 79 runs, with Sangha contributing 55 of them for off just 22 deliveries. It is a knock reminiscent of the one that Ben McDermott played for Hobart Hurricanes a couple of nights ago, where he bided his time before unleashing at the death. Sangha’s heroics had similarly devastating consequences for the Strikers. He even came on to turn his arm over in the second half of the innings, and took just three balls to pick up a wicket, further making his mark on a night that very firmly belonged to him.Garton’s struggles continueIt’s been a rough few days for English cricketers out in Australia. George Garton found out that wasn’t just limited to those wearing whites in the Ashes. In two of his last three games for the Strikers, the allrounder went for 41 in four and 48 in three, with the trend very much continuing tonight. He went for nine in the second over of the night, but things were going to get much worse than that. When he came on for the 13th over, Sangha had only managed 13 off 20 balls, but Garton found himself dispatched for a pair of sixes at the Australian began to find his feet. By the time he was thrown the ball for another go in the 19th over, Sangha was in full flow, and Garton on a hiding to nothing. Three sixes and a boundary meant his final involvement with the ball was the costliest over of the game, leaking 23 and setting Thunder on course for a comfortable victory. With the bat, Garton never found fluency, and an ugly swipe saw his innings end on 8 off 11.Strikers’ Powerless Power SurgeThe home side called for the Power Surge immediately after drinks, but it happened to coincide with the time Thunder were applying the squeeze especially effectively. Matt Renshaw struck a couple of boundaries off Saqib Mahmood to get things going. But when he chipped the last ball of the over to Green, the Strikers appeared to collapse in on themselves.Jake Weatherald, who had hung around for a pretty, if non-menacing, 31, also found Green at mid-off three balls later. Sangha would nail Thomas Kelly in the over that followed, and Strikers curiously opted against promoting Rashid Khan up the order even as the asking rate ballooned. The Strikers had fallen apart around the Power Surge, and in the absence of a Sangha-like figure, simply left themselves with too much to do at the death.

Not just Dragusin: 5/10 Spurs ace was a "horror" against Ipswich

The score ended 4-1. Tottenham were rampant. Ange Postecoglou was in a jubilant mood. The Lilywhites had just dispatched Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 4-1.

That was last week, though. That result is now history. In the week since, Spurs have endured a horror few days.

Victor Osimhen dismantled them in the Europa League in midweek as the Londoners lost 3-2 to Galatasaray. On Sunday, it was Ipswich, lowly Ipswich who had yet to win a game in the Premier League this season who defeated Postecoglou’s side.

How does this keepening you may ask? Only a few weeks ago they allowed Crystal Palace to pick up their first three points of the season, defeating Spurs 1-0 at Selhurst Park.

Okay, so Tottenham haven’t been great on the road this season but they have been electric at home. The 2-1 defeat courtesy of goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap, therefore, was bizarre. In truth, it was classic of a football club who haven’t just endured an up-and-down season but an up-and-down few decades.

At the heart of their poor display yet again was centre-back Radu Dragusin. How they must long for Micky van de Ven’s comeback.

Radu Dragusin's performance vs Ipswich

When Van de Ven left the field in tears during Spurs’ win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, it’s likely a few supporters will have shed a few tears too.

After all, the Dutchman has been one of their most consistent players since arriving during Postecoglou’s first transfer window in charge during the summer of 2023.

Full of pace, full of heart, full of bravery, it is everything Romanian Dragusin is not. You can excuse your third-choice centre-back not quite being of the quality of Van de Ven and Cristian Romero but you cannot excuse the week he has just had.

Sadly, it was the former Genoa defender who was at fault during the midweek defeat to Galatasaray. He was caught in possession for the second goal of the night, turning right into trouble and subsequently gifting their Turkish opposition a goal.

It did not get much better on Sunday afternoon for the centre-back who dismally defended Ipswich’s second of the match. A ball was played across the box and instead of clearing it first time, he knocked it straight into the path of Delap who had a simple tap in from a matter of yards out.

That said, he wasn’t the only player at fault, far from it.

Pedro Porro's performance in numbers vs Ipswich

Pedro Porro may have left Sunday’s clash with an assist to his name, supplying Rodrigo Bentancur’s consolation strike, but his overall performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium simply wasn’t good enough.

In truth, the Spaniard has struggled to replicate his performances of last term across the 2024/25 season, with that assist being his very first of the Premier League campaign.

While decent going forward, it was a “horror show” at the back for both Dragusin and Porro in the words of journalist Mitch Fretton.

Why? Well, he wasn’t great for either of the goals scored by the visitors. Porro and Brennan Johnson were left blaming each other after both players failed to close down Szmodics who acrobatically opened the scoring.

Then, with the second, it was the full-back who again failed to get out to Szmodics who then played the ball towards the byline where it was cut back for Delap. On that evidence, it was hardly a surprise that Football.London’s Alasdair Gold judged the right-back’s display as a 5/10.

The numbers didn’t exactly paint him in a great light either with the 25-year-old giving possession away a worrying 24 times. Yes, he takes set pieces, but it wasn’t great regardless.

To make matters worse, he won just three of his ten duels and succeeded with only one of his four dribble attempts.

Porro will likely keep his place post-international break but he simply has to improve defensively. In fact, Spurs as a whole must clean up their act at the back sharpish. If they can do so they will undoubtedly be in the conversation for a top-four berth. On this evidence, though, they will not.

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and recognised as the ICC men’s cricketer of the year in 2021. His captain, Babar Azam, has been adjudged the ICC men’s ODI cricketer of the year while England Test captain Joe Root is the men’s Test cricketer of the year.”I feel truly honoured and privileged to become the first Pakistan cricketer to win the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year,” Afridi said. “I had always dreamt of doing something unique and special for Pakistan. In this background, I am elated and thank Almighty for blessing me with this respect.”In 2021, Afridi took 78 wickets in 36 internationals at an average of 22.20. At the T20 World Cup, he picked up seven wickets in six matches, including those of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul and Virat Kohli in the group-stage fixture against India, helping steer Pakistan to the semi-finals. In Tests, he claimed 47 wickets in only nine matches at an average of 17.06.”Every performance I gave for Pakistan was enjoyable and memorable and was made possible through the support of my teammates. But to me, the standout performances remained the three wickets against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, and the 18 wickets I took in the two-Test series against the West Indies in Jamaica.”Babar’s 158 in the third ODI against England at Edgbaston during the summer was instrumental in him winning the award.Related

With the series already lost, Pakistan were left to fight for World Cup Super League points, and Babar built on a solid foundation to bring up his career-best score. The knock, however, ended up in a losing cause due to a century stand between James Vince and Lewis Gregory.Overall, Babar featured in just six ODIs in 2021, finishing with 405 runs at an average of 67.50.”The best innings of the year if you ask me of the year, it’s this one. It’s the best innings of my career,” Babar said of his knock. “I was struggling a bit, I needed a knock like that and it gave me a lot of confidence.”Joe Root finished 2021 with 1708 runs•SLC

Meanwhile, Root’s splendid batting year that fetched him 1708 runs in 15 Tests with six centuries, played a key role in him bagging the Test honours.Root’s purple patch started right at the start in Sri Lanka, where made a stunning double-century on a Galle turner, and followed that with prolific returns against India, both home and away. With the ball too, Root chipped in with 14 wickets including a maiden Test five-for against India in Ahmedabad.Root’s numbers stood out amid a poor run from England, as they lost to India both home and away, and finished the year with two losses in Australia. England eventually lost the Ashes 4-0.The knock that stood out was his 128 that helped England begin their India tour with a win in Chennai in February. He batted for 377 deliveries to craft 218 as England’s imposing first-innings total helped set the tone for a 227-run win.”The Chennai hundred sticks out, to get it in my hundredth game will live long in may memory,” Root said. “Incredibly proud to have received this award. Humbled to be in the same breath as a number of players around the world. It means a huge amount to get this award.”South Africa’s Marais Erasmus was named umpire of the year.

Segundo a nota, o acordo pretende recuperar o Vasco e recolocá-lo no protagonismo do futebol brasileiro e internacional.

Lage sold Ait-Nouri’s replacement who’s now ouranking every Wolves player

Over the past few summers, Wolverhampton Wanderers have become a very smart selling club. They have made plenty of profit selling several key players, and although that has arguably had a detrimental effect on their form, the Old Gold have still developed a reputation as an intelligent club in the market.

The four prominent sales over the past two summers include former club captain Ruben Neves and his Portugal teammate Matheus Nunes in 2023. Last summer, they sold another club captain, Max Kilman, and winger Pedro Neto.

It remains to be seen who Wolves’ next major sale will be, but Rayan Ait-Nouri is one player who has impressed during his time at the club.

Ait-Nouri’s Wolves career

Algerian left wing-back Ait-Nouri has been a revelation for Gary O’Neil’s side this season. He joined the club on an initial loan deal from French side Angers in 2020, making the move permanent the following summer.

Ait-Nouri

It is fair to say that Ait-Nouri has been really impressive since making the move to the Midlands. In 129 games for the club so far, he has ten goals and ten assists but has performed particularly well the past two seasons.

In 2023/24, the former Angers defender scored three goals and grabbed two assists in 38 games in all competitions. He has been even better this season and has already equalled that tally in the Premier League, with 12 appearances under his belt; it will be incredibly surprising if he doesn’t exceed it.

Ait-Nouri’s standout performances for the Old Gold have led him to be linked with some of England’s biggest clubs. One recent report states that he is “high on the wishlist” of Ruben Amorim, as he looks to strengthen his new Manchester United squad.

If Wolves do lose one of their star players once again in January or the summer, they may wish they had kept hold of a ready-made replacement, Ruben Vingare, instead of selling him a few years ago.

Vinagre’s Wolves career

Portuguese left-back Vingare did not have a smooth ride at Molineux. He joined the club on a permanent deal in 2018, following a loan spell, just as Ait-Nouri did a few years later. He made the move from French side Monaco.

ruben-vinagre-wolves

The former Portugal uner-21 international managed just 70 appearances for the Old Gold, spread out over the course of several seasons. He scored three times and grabbed two assists in that time, but never became a permanent fixture in the side.

He went on several loan spells throughout his time contracted to the club, including a move to Greek side Olympiakos in 2020. Interestingly, that coincided with the loan move of Ait-Nouri, and The Athletic’s Tim Spiers confirmed the two transfers were related.

Spiers explained on X at the time that the Algerian was signed “to replace Vinagre in the squad”, a like-for-like swap.

After leaving Molineux permanently in 2022 under then-boss Bruno Lage, and moving back to his native country to join Sporting, it was still not easy for Vinagre to settle at a particular club. He returned on loan to England twice, joining Everton and Hull City.

His deal at the Tigers ended in January 2024, and he spent the second half of last season playing for Hellas Verona.

Finally, this season, the left-back seems to have discovered his best form. Now playing for Polish side Legia Warsaw, he has nine assists in 24 games in all competitions, including two in just three Conference League outings.

It is somewhat ironic that the man loaned out to make room for Ait-Nouri is now outperforming him from an assists point of view this term, with that tally of nine better than any every member of the Wolves squad in 2024/25. Equally, only Matheus Cunha (ten goals and assists) boasts more total goal involvements among those at Molineux than Vinagre so far this season.

Environment is everything for a footballer, and Vinagre is clearly playing for a club where he can flourish. Wolves fans may well look back at his time at Molineux and wish it had panned out differently. They could have had a perfect Ait-Nouri replacement right under their noses all along.
