Nottingham Forest have hit gold on ace who’s worth more than Silva & Sosa

Nottingham Forest have conducted some excellent business in the transfer market since promotion to the top flight ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, signing players at a great price before selling them for a profit.

Orel Mangala joined the Reds ahead of the first campaign for a fee in the region of £12m, before leaving on loan in January before signing permanently for French side Lyon for a combined £30m after his loan and transfer fee.

Moussa Niakhate moved to Lyon earlier this summer, following in the Belgian’s footsteps, moving in a £27m deal – a move that secured the club an £18m profit on the fee they paid for him just two years prior.

After such a huge amount of money was brought into the club, Forest have looked to strengthen in numerous key areas, with boss Nuno Espírito Santo still looking to add to his squad despite his six first-team additions this summer.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Earlier this week, the Reds secured a deal to sign Portuguese winger Jota Silva from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes on a four-year deal.

The 25-year-old made his debut for his national side during the previous international break as a result of his excellent performances and figures which saw him register 11 goals and five assists in the Liga Portugal.

Jota Silva

The forward could be joined in the East Midlands by another attacker, with the Reds still hunting for reinforcements in the final third despite the recent arrival of Silva.

In recent days, Forest have seen a progression in talks with Argentinian side Tallares over a potential deal to see Paraguayan wideman Ramon Sosa move to the City Ground.

However, they do face tough competition from fellow Premier League sides Fulham, Wolves and Everton for his signature – with the 24-year-old a man in demand this summer.

Despite the interest elsewhere, reports – via Sport Witness – have claimed that Forest hold the edge and that a move is seemingly edging closer to completion, with Sosa potentially travelling to the UK to agree a deal in the coming days.

Their respective transfers could follow one current Reds star who has excelled after his move from a lower-quality division to the Premier League.

Murillo’s market value in 2024

After joining the club from Corinthians in a £15m deal last summer, Brazilian centre-back Murillo has excelled at the City Ground – exceeding all expectations.

He’s made 32 consecutive league starts, winning the club’s Player of the Year award, prompting huge interest from all over Europe.

PSG, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid are just some of the sides who have been linked with a move for the talent this summer, with the Reds demanding a club-record fee to prise him away from the City Ground this summer.

As a result of his excellent progress since his move to England, his market value has soared to a staggering £38m, as per Transfermarkt – a £23m increase on what they paid for his services less than 12 months ago.

Murillo

His subsequent value is higher than the combined price of Sosa and Silva, whose rumoured price tag of £12m and fee of £5.9m, respectively, only adds up to £17.9m.

The Brazilian’s transfer is an example of the excellent recruitment currently taking place at the City Ground, with Nuno and the fanbase hoping that the two aforementioned players can have a similar impact in the near future.

In a time when FFP and PSR limits are tight, the hierarchy must get these transfers right, with the club needing to take a gamble on foreign talents to improve the club’s standing whilst making them a huge profit down the line.

Andy Flower: Mohammad Rizwan 'has the qualities to make a very successful leader'

Multan Sultans coach backs the decision to change captains just days out from the start of the 2021 PSL season

Umar Farooq17-Feb-20213:12

Flower: ‘Rizwan has the qualities to make him a very successful leader’

The decision to elevate wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan as captain of Multan Sultans was an acknowledgement of his inherent leadership qualities rather than his recent red-hot form, according to head coach Andy Flower. Flower said his franchise hoped to play a part in Rizwan’s development for the good of Pakistan cricket.Multan’s decision to replace Shan Masood, who led them to the playoffs last year, days before the sixth season was surprising – Masood was integral in trialling a system of signals between coaching staff and the captain on-field, a kind of real-time strategising as play went on. That was a system England later used in their T20Is against South Africa – Nathan Leamon, England’s white-ball analyst was also with Multan. But at least partly it would appear the change is a result of a shake-up within the franchise. ESPNcricinfo understands that Alamgir Tareen, a prominent businessman, has now taken complete ownership of the franchise, in a move that has seen Ali Tareen, his nephew and hitherto the face of the franchise, moved out.Multan insisted, however, that the decision was a cricketing one.”Rizwan has shown that he’s got leadership qualities when he captained Pakistan while Babar (Azam) was injured,” Flower said. “He’s also got a really good record in domestic cricket, recently won the T20 tournament for his state (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) so he’s got the qualities to make a very successful leader. I don’t know him well, but obviously been doing a bit of research on him and he had some of the leadership qualities that we’re looking for for a new way forward. In saying that, I would say that I really enjoyed working with Shan Masood last year. I thought he captained very well, played very well, and was very much a part of us doing well last season.Mohammad Rizwan made his maiden Test and T20I hundred this month•AP Photo

“However, nothing stays permanent in life and this is a change that we’ve made. Shan is still a very important part of the Multan group. In whatever way, as a batsman or an internal leader, he’ll still play a very big part in this upcoming tournament. But for the moment, Rizwan is our captain and we’re very much looking forward to him leading the side and us getting to the play-offs again. It’s not a short-term decision. Rizwan has shown leadership qualities over a longer period of time and It’s not just his form with the bat.”The move is further confirmation of Rizwan’s swiftly rising status within Pakistan cricket, having for so long been back-up to Sarfraz Ahmed. He has now firmly established his place across formats with PCB naming him vice-captain in Test cricket. He announced himself in England last year to win a Player-of-the-Series award and his stocks rose further in New Zealand where even though the team lost both Tests under his leadership, he continued scoring runs in crisis situations.Though he’s scored first-class runs for a while now in much the same vein, the surprise has been his T20 form. In the National T20 Cup before the New Zealand series, he scored four fifties, including an unbeaten 99 against Central Punjab, which helped him finish as the highest run-scorer. His tournament tally of 389 runs at 38.90 – and a strike rate of 127.96 – led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the 2020 title.”We would like to be a part of his development for his own good, and also for the good of Pakistan cricket,” Flower said. “All of the franchises, I think, need to keep in mind the development of Pakistan cricket and its long-term good and Rizwan is case in point. In our particular example, Shan is a really good young man and a strong young man. He’s had various speed bumps and hurdles to overcome in his young career and this will be another one for him. It’s not easy for him and we can empathise with him, but we all grow stronger from some of these hurdles that we have to overcome. And in this case, I am absolutely certain that that is the way Shan will react.”Although he is yet to play T20Is for Pakistan, Masood rose to prominence with good run in domestic cricket last year scoring 569 at 27.09 at a strike rate of 125.60. However, he isn’t an explosive opening batsman and with Rizwan likely to play in the top order Masood’s chances of keeping his place seem bleak with James Vince, Chris Lynn, Sohaib Maqsood, and Rilee Rossouw also around.”We’ve got a good number of options for the top order, but there are also people in that line-up that have batted at Nos. 3 and 4 quite regularly,” Flower said. “So we’re not concerned about the order. I think it’s a strength for us. That we have players that are adaptable and that we can adapt either to the conditions that are at play or the opposition and some of their tactics. So we think that the number of options that we have at the top of the order and in the middle order is a strength. If you’re asking about what particular order we’re going to use, I’m not going to tell you right now, we’ve got a couple of practice matches now, but obviously sharing that sort of information for our opposition, we wouldn’t do that.”

Eoin Morgan downplays prospect of Alex Hales earning T20 World Cup recall

Time is a healer, says captain, as prospect of summer training-camp invite remains

Eoin Morgan has downplayed the possibility of Alex Hales winning an England recall ahead of the T20 World Cup.Hales recently enjoyed an excellent BBL campaign and continues to hold the record for the highest T20I score by an England player – 116 not out against Sri Lanka in the 2014 World T20. He also has a higher T20I average than anyone in the current England squad (31.01; only Joe Root and Kevin Pietersen, among England players, average more) and continues to excel in T20 leagues around the world. But he hasn’t played for England since March 2019 after failing two tests for recreational drugs. As a result, Morgan, England’s limited-overs captain, said he had shown a “complete disregard” for team values and would need to rebuild that trust before he could be recalled. While Ed Smith, the national selector, has recently suggested the process of reintegrating Hales into the England squad could begin in the coming months with invitations to training sessions, Morgan has stressed that breaking back into a team that cannot, at present, accommodate Root, could prove challenging.”Our position on Alex still remains the same,” Morgan said. “He’s out of the squad. The squad is very strong at the moment.”You look at the strength of our squad at the moment and the areas that we’re trying to improve… one area we don’t struggle for players, it’s probably in the top three.”He’s not in the squad and the squad is very difficult to get back into. The player that he is has never been in doubt.”Could he return ahead of the World Cup? Only time will tell. But time is a great healer.”Morgan did accept that Hales could be invited to training sessions during the English summer, but admitted the pair had yet to speak. He also stressed his continuing faith in Jason Roy at the top of the order despite having not reached 25 in his most recent 10 international innings dating back to February 2020 and Jonny Bairstow, who endured a miserable Test series against India.”One area, every summer, that we try and grow and learn more about players outside the squad is trying to bring them in, in the build-up to series say, two days out, a practice day,” Morgan explained. “We’ll have guys come in and bowl, bat in the nets and just be around the group.Related

Hales: World Cup axe was 'sickening' but hopes for forgiveness

“Last summer, we weren’t able to do that. This summer it’s looking like restrictions and our bubbles will be a little bit more relaxed, depending on vaccinations and spikes and all that sort of thing. But it could present an opportunity to have Alex in and around. We haven’t spoken yet.”As for Jason… he doesn’t need to remind any of us how good he is. We watch him train day in, day out and know the quality of player he is. We also know the impact of how he plays and the influence it has on the dressing room and the other batters.”I’m not concerned whatsoever about Jonny. I think, the way the formats are now, there’s a huge distinction between Test cricket and white-ball cricket.”Morgan also appeared to confirm that Ben Stokes would continue to bat in the middle order. While Rajasthan Royals have utilised him in the top-order in recent times – even experimenting with moving Jos Buttler into the middle-order – England have no such plans.”I’m happy with the structure I have,” Morgan said. “Ben has done really well for us there [in the middle order] and hopefully that will continue.”

Liverpool now want to sign "unreal" in-demand Olympic medalist for Slot

With just two weeks left until the transfer window slams shut, Liverpool now reportedly want to make an Olympic medalist the first signing of the Arne Slot era.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have been the quietest club in Europe's top five leagues this summer, so far failing to sign a single reinforcement. It looked for a moment as though Martin Zubimendi would end that drought, only for the Spaniard to steal the headlines by changing his mind and opting to stay put at boyhood club Real Sociedad.

Martin Zubimendi

Slot recently spoke about the midfielder and Liverpool's pursuit of fresh faces, saying via The Evening Standard: "I've said many times already that our squad is really strong and it's not so easy to find players who can help us or improve the squad.

"Zubimendi was one of them to be fair, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have. [Wataru] Endo did well in pre-season. We're in a good place.

“[Sporting director] Richard [Hughes] is trying to strengthen the squad. Zubimendi decided not to come, we did every effort. If a player decides not to come then it's obvious he's not coming.”

Liverpool have been tracking giant 6 foot 4 defensive midfielder for a year

He would be considered one for the future.

ByHenry Jackson Aug 16, 2024

Now, reports suggest that one of the areas Hughes is attempting to strengthen is the current Anfield defence. According to L'equipe, Liverpool now want to sign Adrien Truffert from Stade Rennais after the left-back enjoyed a solid summer, winning the silver medal for France at the Paris Olympics, missing out on gold up against Spain.

The Reds aren't the only side interested, however, with Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest all reportedly eyeing moves to sign the 22-year-old this month.

Andy Robertson, now 30 years old and criticised for his performance at Ipswich on Saturday, won't go on forever, and signing a young replacement would represent the type of squad planning that Liverpool have so desperately lacked in recent years.

"Unreal" Truffert can become Robertson heir

With doubts over Owen Beck's future and Kostas Tsimikas often struggling to replicate Robertson's quality, Truffert could emerge to become a solid piece of business from Liverpool, should they turn their interest into a solid move this month. Just 22 years old, the Frenchman has all the time in the world to step into Slot's squad and learn from one of the best in Robertson, before eventually taking the starting place.

Crucially matching Robertson off the ball, Truffert certainly has plenty of potential and potential that Liverpool should play a large part in unlocking. Described as "unreal" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the Olympic medalist wouldn't steal the same headlines that Zubimendi would have, but he'd arguably be of similar importance in the long term.

As the Premier League season gets going and the Reds remain without a single incoming, Truffert could quickly become one to watch, having shown all the hallmarks of a player that those at Anfield should be looking at in the next two weeks.

Was part of the Test squad for the postponed South Africa having been around the set-up all season and played ODIs and T20Is against India. Although an average of 48 needs to tempered by a season where many batters filled their boots this was much more like the Bancroft that earned international honours.Australia ambitions
Hasn’t played since the 2019 Ashes and with the emergence of Will Pucovski and the recall of Marcus Harris against India he is some way down the list at the moment although it’s certainly not out of the question that he could get another go.Related

Has slipped someway down the pecking order but has time to force his way back if he can string together a strong county campaign and then start next summer well in Australia. An impressive Shield season included a double century which was part of the record stand of 486 with Will Pucovski although his unbeaten hundred in tricky conditions against Queensland was an equally good innings. Still has a bit of a habit of not quite cashing in on the number of starts he makes, but Chris Rogers’ arrival at Victoria appears to have been good for his game.Australia ambitions
Was recalled to the Test side for the decider against India in Brisbane when Pucovski was injured, but with such a long gap between matches incumbency may not mean much come next summer. However, plenty of runs for Leicestershire will keep him in the selectors’ minds.Travis Head – Sussex (all formats)Sheffield Shield Matches: 7; Runs: 893; Average: 68.69

Also churned out the runs in one-day cricket although as captain could not lead the Redbacks to a single victory all season. Had limited chance to make an impact in the BBL for Adelaide Strikers and couldn’t get going.Australia ambitions
Having been dropped after two Tests against India to accommodate the return of David Warner, debut for Pucovski and retention of Matthew Wade, Head would have had a good chance of reclaiming his spot in South Africa although faced competition from Henriques. With the selectors now seemingly moving on from Wade he’ll be firmly in the running for the No. 5 spot in the Ashes, especially if he impresses with Sussex.Josh Inglis – Leicestershire (T20)BBL Matches: 17; Runs: 413; Average: 34.41; S/R: 140.00Must have been a tempting all-formats signing for somebody after an outstanding all-round domestic summer for Western Australia and Perth Scorchers, but it will just be T20s for him with Leicestershire. A hugely versatile batter and excellent wicketkeeper he is something of a rarity in Australia in that he has adapted to a move from the top of the Scorchers’ order to the middle.Australia ambitions
Very close to recognition. Could easily have made either the Test or T20I squad a couple of months ago, although there is no shortage of keepers in the latter. Marnus Labuschagne – Glamorgan (CC, RLC)Sheffield Shield Matches: 8; Runs: 821; Average: 82.10
Marsh Cup Matches: 4; Runs 145; Average: 36.25
Heading back to where the rise really started. The story of his development at Glamorgan ahead of the 2019 Ashes is well known, but no one could truly have known the heights he would already have reached. Capped his Australian summer with the defining innings, 192, of the Sheffield Shield final and he was the only batter to score four hundreds in the competition (and made another against India). Few would have blamed him for wanting some time off, but his love of batting holds no bounds.Australia ambitions
Reckon he’s going okay on that front. On a slightly more serious point it will be interesting to watch how his 50-over batting continues to develop and he is not yet in Australia’s T20 plans (he won’t be playing the Blast for Glamorgan, either).Mitchell Marsh – Middlesex (T20)BBL Matches: 15; Runs: 315; Average: 39.37; S/R: 147.88 | Wickets: 4; Average: 18.75; Econ: 6.52One of the strongest hitters of a cricket ball going around, Marsh should provide a dynamic package for Middlesex in the Blast. Had a good season with the bat for the Scorchers in the BBL but his bowling was limited by injury – something he has had to deal with frequently over the last few years.Australia ambitions
Is firmly in plans for the T20 World Cup having featured on the recent New Zealand tour although his position rarely feels entirely secure. Has the game to be a finisher in the middle order.Ben McDermott – Derbyshire (RLC, T20)Marsh Cup Matches: 2; Runs 68; Average: 34.00
BBL Matches: 12; Runs: 402; Average: 36.54; S/R: 139.58At his best he can be hugely destructive and he was the leading run-scorer for the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL. His one-day season was limited by being in the Australia T20 squad. Offers another wicketkeeping option for any team he plays for, but also superb in the outfield.Australia ambitions
Is in the thinking for T20 World Cup although could struggle to make the final cut depending on squad sizes. Has even been talked about as a Test candidate despite just two first-class centuries (the second coming for Australia A against India this season) but white-ball cricket would seem the likelier opportunity.Peter Siddle remains a hugely consistent bowler•Getty Images

Michael Neser – Glamorgan (CC, RLC)Sheffield Shield Matches: 8; Runs: 161; Average: 32.20 | Wickets: 18; Average: 24.33
Marsh Cup Matches: 3; Wickets: 6; Average: 15.83
Started the season in style with a century and a five-wicket haul in the same match against Tasmania then claimed another five-for to set-up the Sheffield Shield final victory. If there is any assistance in a surface Neser will find it. Should provide huge value for Glamorgan.Australia ambitions
Is there a player more unfortunate to not yet have a Test cap? Rightly or wrongly still feels that he needs at least a couple of injuries or players to lose form to push his way in. Rodgers lining up late Celtic swoop for "powerful" Kyogo upgrade

Celtic are in the market to add more additions to their first-team squad before the summer transfer window officially slams shut on Friday night.

The Hoops confirmed the departure of Matt O'Riley to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday and his move down south could spark a flurry of transfer activity from the club.

Brendan Rodgers has lost his talisman in the middle of the park and is now looking to bolster his options across the pitch before the end of the window.

As you can see in the table above, the Denmark international was instrumental for the Scottish giants at the top end of the pitch with his superb performances in the Premiership, as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

The Hoops have been linked with Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels, LAFC wizard Mateusz Bogusz, and Lazio winger Gustav Isaksen in the last few days.

However, a new target has now emerged for the Hoops as they are reportedly looking to bring a player back for a second spell at Parkhead…

Celtic interested in striker reunion

According to journalist Bobby Manzi, Rodgers is lining up a late swoop to sign Crystal Palace centre-forward Odsonne Edouard before the deadline.

The reporter claims that the Premiership champions are interested in signing the French number nine to bolster their attacking options in the coming days.

He states that the experienced forward could become available for a move this week if the Eagles complete a deal for Arsenal marksman Eddie Nketiah, who is said to be closing in on a move to Selhurst Park.

Former Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard

Palace would then have Jean-Philippe Mateta and Nketiah ahead of Edouard in the pecking order this season, which would open the door for the striker to move on before the window closes to go and find more regular game time elsewhere.

However, Manzi does not reveal whether Celtic would be interested in a permanent move or a loan deal for their former forward, who they sold to the Eagles in a £14m rising to £18.5m deal in 2021.

Rodgers must now push for the Hoops to get a deal over the line for the French ace as he could come in as an upgrade on Kyogo Furuhashi, who has been linked with a move away from Parkhead this month.

Why it could be time to cash in on Kyogo Furuhashi

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Premier League champions Manchester City are considering a late move to sign the Japan international from Parkhead.

It was claimed that Pep Guardiola is looking for a replacement for Julian Alvarez, who completed a switch to Atletico Madrid, and Kyogo has emerged as an option for the English giants.

The outlet added that it would take a fee of around £20m to convince the club to part ways with him, and it remains to be seen whether or not City are prepared to pay that amount of money for him.

This could be the perfect opportunity, if the Cityzens do come in with a firm offer, for Celtic to move Kyogo on and replace him with an upgrade, as his performances over the last 12 months or so suggest that he is a declining talent.

After an impressive 2022/23 campaign under Ange Postecoglou with the Scottish giants, the Japanese centre-forward has struggled for form since Rodgers came through the door last summer.

As you can see in the table above, Kyogo's finishing ability took a huge hit in the 2023/24 campaign, as he missed a staggering 24 'big chances' and only scored 14 goals.

The 29-year-old attacker has also started the current Premiership season with zero goals and a whopping five 'big chances' missed in just three appearances, which means that an upturn in form is not looking likely.

Therefore, now could be the best time for Celtic to cash in on him before his performances continue to decline and his value decreases, if he continues to struggle in front of goal.

Why Celtic should sign Odsonne Edouard

The Hoops should push to sign Edouard as a potential replacement for Kyogo this week as the French ace has the potential to come in as an upgrade for the club.

Bringing the 26-year-old striker back to Parkhead could be a coup for Rodgers, who worked with him during his first spell in Glasgow, as he showcased his finishing quality in the Premier League last season.

The Palace forward only started 17 of his 30 appearances in the division and racked up a tally of seven goals from an xG of 6.25, only missing six 'big chances'.

Edouard is a quality finisher who has proven his ability to make the most of the chances that come his way in one of Europe's major leagues, which suggests that he could thrive once again in a dominant Celtic team that creates plenty of opportunities.

During his time in Scotland, the £90k-per-week was a consistent threat in the final third and did not allow his form to drastically dip, as Kyogo has over the last 12 months.

As you can see in the image above, the French marksman enjoyed a terrific spell with the Hoops after his move from PSG in 2018, with 135 goal contributions in 179 appearances in all competitions.

Edouard, who was once hailed as a "powerful" forward by Rodgers, scored 40 goals in his last two full seasons in the Premiership before his move to the Premiership, an average of 20 per campaign, whilst Kyogo has only managed 14 goals in the division since the start of last term.

Alongside Engels: Celtic can ease O'Riley blow by signing "remarkable" gem

The Hoops have been linked with an interest in the young attacker this month.

Therefore, the 26-year-old star could come in as an upgrade for Celtic because of his consistent and reliable finishing in front of goal, as proven by his form in Scotland and in England last season.
