Shubman Gill: India have 'plenty of moves' for Australia's chin music

The young batsman has emerged as a contender to open the batting with Mayank Agarwal in the first Test

Runs in Australia boost the confidence, says Shubman Gill•Getty Images

Shubman Gill is not only expecting some good, old-fashioned chin music from the Australian quicks during the upcoming four-Test series, he is looking forward to countering it with the “plenty of moves” the Indians have in their arsenal.Sledging, chin music, mind-games, mental disintegration… Australia vs India contests have had a lot of all that in the last couple of decades, and while there is word that both sets of players have become far too nice towards each other of late, Gill is ready to respond when he needs to, and keep quiet when that is the better option.Related

“There are different types of characters. Sometimes you keep quiet and don’t respond, and focus on your batting, and sometimes you react. That depends on how you are feeling at the moment. I am not the sort to keep quiet all the time, but I am not likely to say something each time too. So it depends… We sledge too. When teams come to India, we do get involved,” Gill, the 21-year-old top-order batsman, said in an interview with .”Things might have been different earlier, and maybe some of our batsmen were not as aggressive [in terms of scoring], especially in Test cricket. But now you get a result in almost every Test match, so if they come to us with chin music, we have plenty of moves to deal with their chin music.”Gill played both of India’s first-class warm-up matches in the lead up to the first Test – a day-nighter in Adelaide starting December 17 – and was impressive in the second of them, scoring 43 and 65. Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw are the incumbents in that position, but with Shaw scoring 0, 19, 40 and 3 in his four outings in the two tour games, Gill has become a contender to partner Agarwal at the top. Gill himself seemed to hint at exactly that with a tweet saying: “T-4 days… get your popcorn ready!” “It’s quite intimidating to play Australia in Australia, but I am really looking forward to it,” he said. “As a batsman, there is no bigger opportunity than to play against Australia at their home as your confidence gets a major boost if you manage to score runs here.”As a batsman in Australia, your pull shots and punches and cuts get you the most runs. They get a lot of wickets with the new ball, they pitch the ball up, so it tests both your front-foot and back-foot play.”Gill has already played one international match on tour, the third ODI, which India won by 13 runs – they lost that series 2-1. But he has never played Test cricket, and the last tour game was his first under lights with the pink ball.”We practiced quite a bit with the pink ball in the lead up to the Test match against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens last year (in November),” Gill pointed out. “I don’t have a specific opinion on whether the pink ball moves more (than the red ball). But we’ll have to see, because we played with an SG ball the last time (against Bangladesh) – I don’t know how the Kookaburra ball will react, how much it will move around.”

Imagine him & Gnonto: Everton in contact to sign £20m Onana replacement

Everton will desperately want to build on the 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last season, with the club needing to dip into the market to improve Sean Dyche’s squad.

The Toffees managed to string together a great end to the campaign, winning five of the last eight matches to secure another season of top-flight football, despite receiving multiple points deductions during the 2023/24.

The club have already made attempts to strengthen Dyche’s side, re-signing Jack Harrison, with Iliman Ndiaye and Tim Iroegbunam also arriving on Merseyside this summer.

However, the Toffees still need to offload players if they are to boost their current financial position and avoid any repeat of last season which saw the club docked a total of eight points for breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules.

Despite the priority to move players out of the door at Goodison Park, Dyche is still targeting new additions including one star to replace a player who is edging ever closer to move away from the club.

Everton transfer news

According to journalist David Ornstein, Everton midfield Amadou Onana is edging ever close to a move to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa this summer.

The Belgian, who featured in every minute of his nation’s Euro 2024 campaign, has constantly been touted with a move away from the club, with the West Midlands looking to be the most likely destination.

However, the deal would see the Toffees make a decent profit on the £33m they forked out for his services in 2022, with Unai Emery’s side expected to pay a fee in the region of £50m to lure Onana away from Merseyside.

Undoubtedly, the deal would leave a huge hole in the middle of Everton’s midfield, but, the club have wasted no time in finding a replacement, in the form of Juventus talent Weston McKennie according to Italian outlet Tutto Sport.

Weston McKennie

The USA international has been told he’s free to leave the Italian side this summer, with Dyche’s side able to fork out the £20m asking price should the Onana deal reach its completion in the coming days. It's said they have already made enquiries about a move.

McKennie would be a brilliant replacement for the outgoing Belgian, whilst also being the perfect player for former teammate Wilfried Gnonto, who’s also been strongly linked with a move to Everton, after the duo spent six months together at Leeds United during the back end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Why McKennie would be the perfect Onana replacement

Although Onana would be a huge loss to Dyche’s side, the Everton faithful shouldn’t worry, with McKennie producing some impressive stats that could see him perfectly fit the hole left by the youngster.

The “dangerous” USMNT star, as he described by former boss Jesse Marsch, contributed with seven assists last campaign, over three times more than Onana, a figure that could play perfectly into the hands of Italian forward Gnonto should the pair be reunited together at Goodison.

The American ace also completed three times more progressive carries, demonstrating his ability in carrying the ball forward, liking to create opportunities for his teammates whenever possible.

However, he’s also excelled defensively in 2023/24, averaging a 13% better tackle success rate compared to Onana, whilst also making over double the amount of clearances.

He’s unfortunately become a victim of the new system implemented by new Juventus boss Thiago Motta, with their loss Everton’s game this summer should they win the race for his signature.

Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie

McKennie has proven his talented at both ends of the pitch in recent times, allowing Dyche to have a suitable replacement for one of his key midfielders, whilst also allowing a potential new signing in Gnonto to hit the ground running and flourish at the club.

Paul Farbrace set for T10 coaching role with Bangla Tigers

Andy Flower will take over from Stephen Fleming at Delhi Bulls, with Dwayne Bravo joining him

Paul Farbrace is in line to coach the Bangla Tigers in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi in early 2021.Farbrace, who is currently Warwickshire’s sporting director, is yet to sign a contract but has been approached by the franchise and confirmed his interest in the role to ESPNcricinfo. The T10 League will run from January 28 to February 6 in Abu Dhabi, and Farbrace’s involvement is subject to approval from the county. While it would be unusual for a county’s director of cricket to coach in a franchise league, Farbrace hopes that the experience can be mutually beneficial for him and Warwickshire. His involvement could pave the way for some of the county’s best young white-ball players, like Adam Hose and Ed Pollock, to join him at the Tigers, while he also hopes to expand his contact book while searching for potential overseas signings for next year’s T20 Blast.Related

The Tigers finished third in the competition last season with Aftab Ahmed as coach, and had appointed Lance Klusener as ‘team director’ earlier this year. The role would be Farbrace’s first in a franchise tournament, and his first in a coaching capacity since leaving his role as England’s assistant coach ahead of the 2019 World Cup.Elsewhere in the T10 League, Andy Flower will replace Stephen Fleming at Delhi Bulls this season, after coaching Maratha Arabians to the title last year. Dwayne Bravo has made the same move as Flower, and will be the Bulls’ icon player.Teams have begun to announce their marquee retentions and signings, with Isuru Udana (Bangla Tigers), Shoaib Malik (Maratha Arabians), Chris Jordan (Qalandars), Colin Ingram, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard (all Deccan Gladiators), Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell (both Northern Warriors) among the biggest names to have confirmed their involvement.Meanwhile, the Karnataka Tuskers have rebranded, and will be known as the Pune Devils in 2021. The league’s player draft is set to be staged later this month.

Dom Bess 'can't wait' to renew spin partnership with Jack Leach

Former Somerset team-mates poised to play together in the first Test against Sri Lanka

George Dobell08-Jan-2021The phrase “can’t wait,” comes up frequently when talking to Dom Bess. At least six times in a 20-minute conversation. He “can’t wait” for the Test series in Sri Lanka to start; he “can’t wait” to bowl on more responsive wickets and, most of all he “can’t wait” to renew his spin-bowling partnership with former Somerset teammate, Jack Leach. That’s understandable. After a summer spent playing a supporting role on England’s green and pleasant land – well, pleasant if you’re a seam bowler – he is now facing the prospect of six successive Tests in Asia. The understudy is about to promoted to top billing. Well, top-billing alongside the man who has been competing for a place with him for club and country over much of the last three or four years.ALSO READ: Leach admits Covid concerns meant he feared for Test futureIt’s not hard to see what the England management see in Bess. He is an excellent fielder, he is a good enough batsman to have made a half-century on Test debut and he gives every impression of being an irrepressible character. There’s a lot to like. Some young players, knowing the starring role into which they are about to be thrust, would become anxious about the responsibility. Especially after an underwhelming first day of action on tour; Bess claimed 1-59 in 16 overs in Hambantota learning, at first hand, that Joe Root is a very accomplished player of spin bowling. But he laughs off the experience. Reasoning, quite rightly, that conditions in Hambantota – where the pitch was oddly green and provided copious assistance to the seamers – would be nothing like those expected in Galle, he dismisses both his own modest figures and the fact that Team Buttler were reduced, at one stage, to 48-6. “You shouldn’t stress,” he says. “We’re not. It was very good bowling. It’s quite clever from the Sri Lankans in terms of the pitch. I won’t be thinking too much about it.”Dom Bess is poised to bowl alongside good mate Jack Leach in Galle•Getty Images

The only reservation about Bess is whether his bowling is ready. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it. It’s just that he is, very clearly, still learning his trade. And, right now, it’s not entirely clear what his weapons are. Most of all, his stock ball doesn’t generally cause the batsmen to adjust as much as you might expect with a Test spinner. There’s little of the drift and dip of Moeen Ali or Graeme Swann; there’s not the spin or the control of Nathan Lyon.Remember when Shan Masood hit Bess’s stock ball over mid-wicket and back over his head? It’s hard to imagine such a limited batsman even attempting such a stroke against those other off-spinners. In an ideal world, Bess would probably have another couple of years playing lots of first-class cricket before he was asked to keep England’s slim hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final alive. But we’re not in an ideal world. Adil Rashid is nursing his shoulder back to health; Moeen’s career, even before Covid-19, has been in decline and Leach has been struggling with his health. With English cricket no longer providing much of a breeding ground for young spinners, England have been persuaded to invest in Bess in the hope he will learn on the job and graduate into the real thing.Maybe if there was an absolutely outstanding specialist spin candidate, the England management would pick them. But as there isn’t and given how many days England spinners are resigned to playing peripheral roles, it probably makes sense to pick a player who can find a way to contribute even when not taking wickets. This is not entirely new territory for Bess. When he was called into Somerset’s Championship team, he had a modest record in the Second XI Championship with just 24 wickets in 20 matches at an average of 48. But, playing on turning wickets at Taunton, he soon gained confidence and benefited from a volume of overs that would be the envy of young spinners around the rest of the country. It’s not impossible that history could repeat itself at a higher level. The signs from South Africa, where he provided a vital holding role in Cape Town and claimed a maiden five-wicket haul in Port Elizabeth, is promising. And that’s why they like him. They know he’s going to have some tough days. And they believe he will react phlegmatically, learn from them and be that much better the next day.If, as expected, Bess and Leach play in Galle, it will be the first time they have played a Test together. For two men who have competed for a place at both England and Somerset level without ever losing intensity or falling out, it will be a special occasion. Not so long ago, they were dreaming of this day.”I remember rooming with Leachy in the Somerset second team,” Bess says. “It must have been in 2016 and we were playing down at Kent. We were chatting for ages, joking about one day playing for England. Hopefully that could be next week.”We have always had a battle between each other. But to get back on the park with him hopefully, and bowl at either end, is something I am certainly going to cherish.”Myself and Leachy has been a really interesting one. The situation has only made us both grow as spinners and people because being good mates as well, getting dropped or getting picked, and vice versa… it is very tough.”It’s taken its toll. In those few seconds when I have been picked and ecstatic, and then when he got injured and I made my debut. It was such a strange situation. I don’t think a lot of people will have gone through that kind of thing with a very close mate.”I only think it’s going to be good for us. We will relish the challenge of being on the pitch together, hopefully in conditions that suit us. And it takes away about wanting to be number one because it’s all about the team first.”It’s going to be a really exciting prospect but I don’t think anything changes in what we do as a pair. We have a great partnership. It’s really exciting. The main goal is winning as a collective. I can’t wait.”

West Ham hit gold on star who’s worth more than Duran & Mazraoui combined

With over a month still to go in the summer transfer window, West Ham United supporters must be pretty happy with their outfit's ambition, having provided new head coach Julen Loeptegui with the tools to succeed.

Yet to part with any of last season's first-team regulars, West Ham have signed talented Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme, 18, from Palmeiras and have strengthened at the back with Max Kilman, who played under Lopetegui at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Max Kilman for Wolves

Uncertainty around Lucas Paqueta's future continues to rumble, while a host of players may yet be sold, but there's one star who simply has to be plying his trade at the London Stadium come September – after all, he's so valuable, he's worth more than two prospective Irons signings combined.

West Ham's transfer plans

West Ham aren't resting on their laurels, having addressed two key points of concern already this summer. Indeed, as per Fabrizio Romano, the east Londoners are circling in on signing Jhon Duran from Aston Villa after protracted negotiations.

But moreover, as Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg reports, the long-standing pursuit of a right-back appears to be coming to a head, with an agreement reached with Bayern Munich for the transfer of Noussair Mazraoui in a deal rising to €20m (£17m).

If technical director Tim Steidten is able to get said transfers over the line, this would be a bona fide success for a United side solely focussing on the domestic front next year, with both players more than capable of cementing starring spots in the first team.

Altogether, the signings will come in at around £60m, with Mazraoui's fee rising to £20m and the package involving Lewis Orford heading to Villa Park totalling £40m all told – which is a significant outlay for a side that has already spent big on Guilherme and Kilman.

Another sale or two might be necessary, but it certainly mustn't be Mohammed Kudus, who is still being linked with a move to Liverpool.

Why Mohammed Kudus must not be sold

Kudus has only been with West Ham for one year, joining from Ajax for £38m last year, but he's definitely left his mark on English and European football since the move, with his deadly attacking skills and electrifying ball-carrying ability earning him plenty of acclaim.

With 14 goals and six assists to show for his maiden campaign in England, Kudus is rightly the most valuable player in the West Ham squad, with his current market value, in Steidten's eyes, surpassing that of Duran and Mazraoui combined by a significant amount.

He's a marvellous player, one of the very best dribblers in the business, even described as a "generational talent" by journalist Gary Al-Smith, and he's ranked among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons per 90 too, as per FBref.

If a team like Liverpool does wish to sign him, they would have to pay an astronomical fee. Claret & Hugh claim to have recently spoken with a high-ranking Hammers official, who has flat-out rejected any notion that the Ghana international will be sold.

In the infinitesimal chance that Kudus does indeed leave this summer, it would require a record fee surpassing the £105m that Arsenal paid to secure Declan Rice's services one year ago.

West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus

Kudus is a brilliant player, one of West Ham's finest wingers in a long time. A raw, athletic bundle of brilliance, he would cost an arm and a leg to pull away from the club, easily worth more than Duran and Mazraoui combined.
