Ben Stokes apologises after foul-mouthed response to spectator's 'Ed Sheeran' jibe

Allrounder could face ICC sanction following spectator altercation after his first-innings dismissal and faces demerit points

Ben Stokes has apologised for his “unprofessional” actions, but could still face an ICC sanction following an angry exchange with a spectator who likened him to the singer, Ed Sheeran, on the first day of England’s final Test against South Africa.Stokes, England’s vice-captain, paused as he left the field following his dismissal and, in response to comments from a spectator, appeared to say: “Come say that to me outside the ground, you f***ing four-eyed c***.”Stokes’ words were picked up by broadcasters and, though not shown live, were broadcast shortly after his dismissal. They were soon shared multiple times on social media. The spectator’s comments were not broadcast, though it is understood that the individual involved, who is middle-aged, swore at Stokes and suggested he looked like Sheeran.”I wish to apologise for my language that was heard on the live broadcast today after my dismissal. I should not have reacted in that way,” Stokes said in a statement after the close of play. “As I was leaving the playing area, I was subjected to repeated abuse from the crowd.”I admit that my reaction was unprofessional, and I sincerely apologise for the language I used, especially to the many young fans watching the live telecast around the world.”Throughout the Tests so far, the support from both sets of fans (England and South Africa) has been brilliant. One incident will not ruin such a competitive series, which we are determined to win.”Use of an audible obscenity during an International Match is considered a Level One offence – the least serious – and carries a penalty of one demerit point. Stokes does not have any active demerit points, so the penalty – and any accompanying fine – would amount to little more than a slap on the wrist. In the unlikely event his words are considered a threat of assault, however, then he could be charged with a Level Three offence. If that charge was upheld, Stokes would be hit with five or six demerit points and would be facing a suspension. It is also possible his words will be considered ‘conduct that brings the game into disrepute’ which would leave him open to anything from a Level One to a Level Four offence. Level Four offences are the most serious. The match referee may well take several factors into mitigation. For one thing, the gravity of the comments aimed at Stokes may be considered, while there will also be some thought to Stokes’ state of mind as he deals with the ongoing illness of his father, Ged, who remains in hospital in the city having fallen ill at the start of the tour. The ECB may also be underwhelmed with the incident. The sponsors of Test cricket in England are Specsavers, while it is not so long since Stokes helped England win the Leeds Test in partnership with the bespectacled Jack Leach.Ashley Giles, Managing Director for England Men’s Cricket, added: “It is disappointing that a member of the public has gone out of their way to abuse Ben as he was leaving the field. Ben is fully aware that he should not have reacted in the way that he did and apologises for his actions.”In addition to this incident, members of our support staff were subjected to personal abuse during and after the day’s play. We have requested to the venue to ensure that security and stewarding are enhanced for the remainder of the match so that players’ and staff members can go about their duties without provocation.”Sheeran, the multi-awarding-winning pop star, was described as Stokes’ “biggest fan” when announcing the allrounder’s nomination for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, an award that Stokes won in a ceremony in Aberdeen in December. After the conclusion of the day’s play, Stokes came back out of the dressing-room to chat to spectators – including those by the players’ tunnel, where the incident took place – and to sign autographs.

Romano confirms Liverpool interest in £100m Szoboszlai upgrade

The final days of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure as Liverpool manager are now imperilled: following Thursday’s surprise Europa League exit against Atalanta, hopes of a successful conclusion hinge on leapfrogging Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

While Pep Guardiola’s defending champions only boast a two-point advantage in the top-flight with six games to go, Liverpool and fellow contenders Arsenal have lost their way,

Liverpool players after Atalanta defeat

The Merseysiders, in particular, have seen their aura, their spark and their style, stripped away, complacency, wastefulness and sapped legs all meshing together to present Klopp with quite the quandary at the eleventh hour of his reign.

He has the tools to steady the ship, but FSG’s new CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, will be desperate to ensure the Reds make the right moves on the transfer front going forward, to propel the side forward, and he might have lined up the perfect new addition.

Liverpool eyeing huge new transfer

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are hot on the trail of Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala, monitoring his situation with the recently-dethroned Bundesliga champions.

Bayern are desperate to keep hold of the 21-year-old and have slapped a £100m asking price on his signature to dissuade suitors.

It’s important to bear in mind that Musiala is one of the most exciting and high-value young players in the game, and, as such, Manchester City and Chelsea are lurking, with the Etihad side viewed as the frontrunners by The Guardian.

How Jamal Musiala would fit in at Liverpool

Musiala signed for Bayern Munich as a 16-year-old back in 2019, leaving Chelsea’s Cobham academy to follow the likes of Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson in finding their feet over in the German Bundesliga.

Jamal Musiala for Bayern Munich.

It’s proved to be a successful move, to say the least, with the Germany international posting 43 goals and 30 assists from just 161 senior appearances, winning four Bundesliga titles and one Champions League so far.

This season, he has scored 12 goals and added seven assists across 36 matches in all competitions, producing some excellent dynamic displays in the German top flight.

As per FBref, the 6 foot 1 ace ranks among the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 18% for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for pass completion, the top 14% for progressive carries, the top 1% for successful take-ons and the top 6% for interceptions per 90.

A wonderful dribbler, fleet of feet, intelligent in his forward motions and possessing impressive spatial awareness, Musiala has been hailed for being “decisive in games time and time again” by his manager Thomas Tuchel.

Bayern, by their lofty standards, have been pretty poor this season, and while they might have prevailed against Arsenal in the Champions League to set up a captivating semi-final tie against Real Madrid, there is much work to do ahead of the new season, with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen blitzing to the league title and into the final of the DFB Pokal, undefeated all year.

The versatile attacking midfielder has even been proclaimed to be a “future Ballon d’Or winner” by his Bavarian teammate Alphonso Davies, with such claims corroborated by Musiala’s former youth coach Andre Martin, who has clearly detailed his skill set.

He said: “Technically outstanding, very skillful, and a player who can score all types of goals, inside and outside the box. And he’s a great dribbler and likes to take players on, as he did against Schalke. He later became a No.10 and has become as much of a creator as a goalscorer.”

Liverpool's 7/10 star who was let down by Salah could be Klopp's saviour

This talented Reds player will play a big part in the weeks to come.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 19, 2024

Such a player would be a worthy addition at Anfield, though it might be bad news for someone like Dominik Szoboszlai, who has not been at the races for Klopp’s side recently.

Why Musiala could oust Dominik Szoboszlai

Szoboszlai only joined Liverpool last summer, completing a £60m move from RB Leipzig, and while he is a technically excellent midfielder, his displays over the past several months have failed to produce the calibre of performance that marked his early-season success.

Still, across 27 outings in the Premier League, Szoboszlai has scored three goals, supplied two assists, completed 87% of his passes, averaged 1.9 key passes, 1.1 tackles, 3.5 successful duels and 6.0 ball recoveries per game.

However, he’s been particularly poor in recent weeks and was one of the primary strugglers as Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League against Atalanta, who are sixth in Serie A.

Dominik Szoboszlai is dejected for Liverpool

The 23-year-old possesses many similar attributes to Musiala despite being fashioned into a deeper-lying midfielder than he was accustomed to being in Leipzig, ranking among the top 9% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 4% for shot-creating actions, the top 18% for progressive passes and the top 5% for progressive carries per 90.

But with Klopp leaving this summer, it’s likely that Szoboszlai might find himself playing in a more advanced role once again, especially if Ruben Amorim is appointed, the Portuguese manager implementing an expansive, possession-heavy brand of football that could see the Hungarian shifted into an overlapping right-sided role.

Given that Musiala has already been regarded as a “world-class” player by former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann and boasts defensive statistics that actually surpass that of the energetic Szoboszlai, he could be the more robust, more prolific, more potent player to ensure that Liverpool enter a new era with sights firmly fixed on a continuation of the illustrious heights of the past decade.

Dale Steyn to reassess his future after T20 World Cup

“As long as that drive is there to still play at the highest level, and get batters out, I am going to continue to do that,” he says

Dale Steyn is likely to call time on his international career after this year’s T20 World Cup but remains committed to making himself available for South Africa in white-ball cricket until then.Steyn, who retired from Tests in August last year and has not played for the national team in 11 months, will make his return with the upcoming T20I series against England, where he hopes to stake a claim for the T20 World Cup.Asked if he would consider prolonging his limited-overs’ run until the 2021 edition of the competition, Steyn was hesitant, once he realised the competitions run in successive years.”Is there another T20 World Cup? Next year? Wow, that’s short-lived. So if we win it, we only win for a year,” Steyn said in East London. “This one would be a nice one to go to and then finish off and reassess after the end of this year and then I will kind of figure out what I want to do.”For now, the only thing Steyn wants to do is get on the park after missing out on South Africa’s last T20I series, against India last September when the selectors deemed him unfit despite his own declaration of readiness. “I love playing cricket. I wake up every day and I can’t see myself doing anything else right now. I am just putting my hand up and saying I’m available, pick me, don’t pick me and then we’ll see how it goes to the World Cup.”As long as that drive is there to still play at the highest level, and get batters out and fox them and outsmart them and all that kind of stuff, if I can do that, I am going to continue to do that. And then once I can’t do that anymore, well once I decide that I don’t want to do it anymore, then I’ll be done.”Recent evidence, in the Mzansi Super League and the Big Bash League, suggests that Steyn still has what it takes to get the better of some of the world’s best batsmen. He was the third-highest wicket-taker in the MSL where he counted AB de Villiers, Dean Elgar and Alex Hales among his 15 victims and took five wickets at 16.20 in the BBL. Notably, Steyn did not get all his wickets with pace alone and was playing with cutters and slower balls, especially in the MSL.Dale Steyn during South Africa team training•Gallo Images

“I decided to play a braver brand of cricket,” Steyn said. “I tried one or two different things that I wouldn’t necessarily do and I thought I would use that as a nice time to experiment and it worked out quite nicely. With Test cricket, it’s very important that you are bowling at high speed but T20 cricket is a great way to be versatile. If you want to bowl 145kph, guys need to know that it’s there, a 90-plus-miles-an-hour bouncer, yorker, whatever it is but you can also change it up and then it makes that 90-mile-an-hour bouncer so much more effective. If you are just constantly doing the same thing, good batters can adjust.”It’s that kind of wisdom, gained through experience, which Steyn hopes to pass on to a young South Africa pack in the next few weeks. In Kagiso Rabada’s absence, Steyn will bowl alongside Lungi Ngidi, who has also been working on pace off the ball, Andile Phehlukwayo and Sisanda Magala, who are death-bowling specialists and Beuran Hendricks, who adds variation to the attack with his left-arm seam.South Africa are looking at all of them as potential World Cup participants and Steyn, while still seeing himself as a strike bowler, wants to be their mentor. “I want to kind of orchestrate that bowling line-up a little bit. I want to be able to guide them,” he said. “I want to stand at mid-off and really say, ‘look what are you thinking, what ball are you going to bowl’ and hopefully they can learn and get better every game while I’m there. My job is to make sure guys are making the right decisions on the field. That’s what I want to achieve out of this.”Those are the words of a man whose mind is on legacy, which suggests that Steyn has already switched perspective. He is no longer a player interested in only his own performances or the team’s success; he is now a player with the end in sight, interested in ensuring there is longevity in the system he is part of. It may even suggest Steyn sees a future in coaching, although he acknowledged he would need to learn the ropes first.”If I wanted to do anything in the coaching world, I would probably need to upskill myself,” he said. “It’s very easy to say take a player, a world-class player out of the system of playing and just push him into a coaching role but coaching is a whole other thing. It’s a skill. I’ll probably have to take a little bit of time to spend some time with people that can teach me how to coach.”But that doesn’t mean Steyn is ready to dive into a post-playing career as a coach just yet. While he didn’t “want to tell you right now,” what he may have up his sleeve post the T20 World Cup, he dropped a hint that it has nothing to do with cricket at all. “A good friend of mine has started a business and he really specialises in players that are retired athletes and we’ve had some great conversations about other players he has had in the football world and what they are doing and where they are going. It’s exciting, some of the things that are lined up. And it doesn’t have anything to do with commentary or coaching which is quite nice.”

Nunez dropped in 5 changes: Predicted Liverpool lineup vs Atalanta

Whether Liverpool succeed against the odds and overturn a three-goal deficit against Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday night is one thing, but if Jurgen Klopp's side produced a languid, uninspiring performance then hopes of a resurrection will ebb away.

A campaign of great excitement is at risk of fizzing out quite disappointingly at the final phase of Klopp's reign on Merseyside, with the Reds losing twice at Anfield last week, 3-0 against Gien Piero Gasperini's men in the first leg of their quarter-final tie and again last weekend against Crystal Palace.

Hopes of European silverware now dangle by a thread, while Manchester City have leapfrogged Liverpool and Arsenal into pole position in the Premier League with just a smattering of fixtures left to play.

Jurgen Klopp

A confidence-lifting display is paramount, but Liverpool will have to contend with the absence of Conor Bradley, who has been ruled out for the rest of April. On the plus side, a host of stars have returned from layoffs of late.

With Liverpool travelling to Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday, Klopp might make five changes to the team that the Eagles grounded.

1 GK – Allison

Alisson Becker.

While Caoimhin Kelleher could start this one after Alisson made his anticipated return and produced a valiant display despite defeat against Crystal Palace, the first-choice shot-stopper must get the nod.

Liverpool simply have to reignite their campaign and there is no one better than Alisson between the sticks. His inclusion is a must.

2 RB – Joe Gomez

Liverpool's Joe Gomez

Trent Alexander-Arnold might appear the obvious option to start at right-back after Bradley's injury but he was rushed back last time and look how that went.

With a clash against Fulham forthcoming, Joe Gomez should deputise, with the club's vice-captain introduced after the break.

3 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate after Atalanta defeat

It's not been the best of weeks for Ibrahima Konate, who has been at fault in both of his side's recent defeats and is currently scraping for the last vestiges of his recent imperiousness.

Still, the France international has been a monstrous presence at the back this term and now he finds himself presented with the perfect chance to redeem himself.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has definitely not been at his best these past few weeks but he's still been performing with steel-enforced strength this season, and he will be confident that he can revive his formidability.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.

Probably Liverpool's best player against Palace, Andy Robertson's energy and drive will certainly be on display in Italy.

He just needs to combine his core qualities with the highest degree of creativity and decision-making.

6 DM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

Wataru Endo looks off the boil and so Alexis Mac Allister must be unleashed in the anchoring position in midfield to steady Liverpool's ship and blend toughness with creativity from deep.

He's been sublime this season and if Liverpool are to enjoy success once again, he will surely be at the centre of the action.

7 CM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai hasn't quite fallen by the wayside in recent months but he's lost his balance down the meandering path of Liverpool's campaign, and has been guilty of some poor performances of late, notably making a horrible mistake in the build-up to Atalanta's third one week ago.

As per FBref, the Hungary international ranks among the top 8% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 13% for passes attempted, the top 18% for progressive passes, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 7% for blocks per 90.

It's all in his locker. This would be the time for Szoboszlai to revive his early-season prowess.

8 CM – Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott for Liverpool

Harvey Elliott has to start. With Mac Allister dropping deeper the 21-year-old will be vital in serving Liverpool's profligate forwards with enough chances to bypass the Atalanta net.

Having made quite the impression in Europe this season, Elliott could hold the key to ensuring Liverpool eradicate any complacency and start strong.

9 RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah looks dejected for Liverpool

Mohamed Salah just hasn't been on the money since returning from injury – scoring just once in his last four games – with much having been left to be desired in regard to his overall performance.

Still, he's Salah. Klopp will unleash him from the outset on Thursday night because he's capable of wreaking devastation on the opposition and he just needs to lift himself back up. He's desperately needed ahead of the coming weeks.

10 LW – Cody Gakpo

Liverpool player Cody Gakpo

One of the few bright sparks from a torrid period, Cody Gakpo was handed a 7/10 match rating against Crystal Palace by the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle.

Praised for his "special skill set" by assistant manager Pep Lijnders, the Dutchman also won 11 duels and created five key passes for his teammates against Atalanta one week ago.

Darwin Nunez has been influential this season but has recently regressed to last season's wasteful level. He's got to be ditched for this one.

Cleiton duas vezes

Goleiros protagonistas novamente, e gol salvador

Newcastle make approach for Gabriel & Saliba "hybrid" to partner Botman

Despite Newcastle United's recent injury crisis, Eddie Howe's side have had a decent campaign with the Magpies still in with a shout of European football next season.

His side fell to a first defeat in five Premier League games against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, but still sit seventh in the Premier League, just three points behind Manchester United.

In recent weeks, Howe's defence has thrived despite losing players such as Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries.

The Magpies have kept two clean sheets in their last three league outings, including one in the 4-0 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park.

Their various setbacks have allowed Dan Burn to shift to a more central role, as a wide left-sided centre-back, but, ahead of the summer, the Magpies are still looking to strengthen their backline, with the club targeting one player to help solve their defensive woes.

Newcastle leading the race to sign new defender

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Newcastle have overtaken Liverpool in the hunt for Sporting Lisbon's 20-year-old centre-back Ousmane Diomande, having also made an approach for the young starlet.

The Ivorian has excelled in Portugal this campaign, starting on 22 occasions and scoring two goals – a record that has put both Premier League sides on red alert.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-news-newcastle-premier-league

The youngster has an €80m (£69m) release clause, as per the report, with Howe's side potentially having to offload some first-team members if they are to afford a deal for the centre-back, as confirmed by the club's CEO.

However, despite the release clause, Newcastle hope to be able to negotiate a deal with Sporting to try and strike a deal that would benefit both parties – with the Magpies needing to prioritise his addition given his recent stats and plaudits.

Why Diomande could be the answer to Newcastle's defensive issues

Diomande, who's been likened to a "hybrid" of Arsenal defenders William Saliba and Gabriel by scout Ben Mattinson, has produced some phenomenal stats in Liga Portugal during 2023/24 – even beating the Gunners' star defensive duo in multiple key areas.

When comparing the trio's stats during the current campaign, Diomande has dominated in and out of possession, albeit in a lower-quality division.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-gossip-arsenal-sporting-edu-arteta-jurrien-timber

The defender has averaged 1.7 tackles per 90 this season, as per FBref, with Saliba and Gabriel only able to notch a tally of one and 1.5 respectively, for that same metric.

Despite his successes off the ball, the 20-year-old has also trumped the Arsenal centre-back pairing with the ball at his feet, averaging a whopping 5.3 progressive passes per 90, with neither the Frenchman or Brazilian able to average over four per 90.

Diomande is also capable of dribbling the ball out from the back, averaging 0.9 progressive carries per 90 – a tally that is the same as the Gunners' defenders combined this season.

His ability is there for all to see, with Howe's side desperately needing to push in the race for his signature, to avoid missing out on one of Europe's top young talents – with the aim of establishing a long-term partnership with Botman, once the "incredible" Dutchman, as described by pundit Leon Osman, returns from injury.

Whilst Diomande may cost the club nearly double what they paid for Botman, it would be a worthwhile investment, with the Ivorian having the talent to star at the back alongside the 24-year-old for Newcastle for many years to come.
