Nine in nine for Amazon Warriors after stellar Malik, Rutherford repair job

Imran Tahir takes three wickets to help bowl out Jamaica Tallawahs cheaply

Guyana Amazon Warriors. Table toppers, unbeaten, full of confidence. What could go wrong? Well, eight balls into the game, they lost four wickets to Oshane Thomas and Derval Green. Intriguingly, both of them were on hat-tricks at that stage, with Thomas’ wickets coming off the last two balls of the first over and Green’s off the first two balls of the second.Neither of them got there, and with their backs to the wall, Shoaib Malik, the only overseas captain in CPL 2019, resurrected the innings via an 82-run stand with Sherfane Rutherford. Malik finished unbeaten on 73 to help Amazon Warriors post 156. This was 77 too many for Jamaica Tallawahs, who looked defeated at the halfway mark itself, and were bowled out in 16.3 overs. Amazon Warriors, meanwhile, remain unbeaten in CPL 2019 with one league game remaining. The four-in-four magic
This was by all means a bat-first pitch. Tallawahs knew it would get slower and stop on the batsmen as the game progressed, which is why they couldn’t have bargained for a better start. In the very first over, Thomas bowled Brandon King as he backed away to slap a length ball over cover, and then had Shimron Hetmyer caught behind, albeit in controversial circumstances with replays suggesting no conclusive evidence for the edge.Off the first two balls of the next over, Green beat Chandrapaul Hemraj for pace by pushing him back and flattening the leg stump before getting Nicholas Pooran lbw with a full inswinger that tailed in late to crash into the pads. Eight balls, eight runs, four wickets. Tallawahs were on fire. The revivalMalik and Rutherford walked in to a crisis and walked out of one very quickly. From the fourth to seventh overs, Rutherford counter-attacked to ensure they had at least one boundary every over. Off Green’s second, Rutherford carved out three fours to put the pressure right back. Malik quickly slipped into the role of second fiddle, the pair raising their half-century stand off just 39 balls; Rutherford’s contribution was 33.Tallawahs were slightly shaken by the counter and continued to slip, not even Rutherford’s wicket to break the stand coming as a respite. They had let Malik off the hook on 20 when Zahir Khan misjudged and eventually put down a sitter at short fine-leg in the 12th over off Dwayne Smith. This merely proved to be the trigger for Malik to go on the attack as he brought up a half-century off just 35 deliveries. Then he took apart Thomas at the death as the bowler erred consistently in lengths to concede 26 off the penultimate over. Malik finished on 73 not out and Amazon Warriors had momentum by their side.Tallawahs stifled in the PowerplayChris Green quietly continues to make heads turn. The Australian selectors may well have an excellent Powerplay spin option to consider for next year’s T20 World Cup, because he is accurate, economical, gets the ball to skid, bounce and varies his angles well. All this helped get rid of Chris Gayle first ball when Green went around the stumps and got one to fizz straight on and beat Gayle on the inside edge. Malik cleverly went with spin at the other end too, with Imran Tahir, who had Chadwick Walton hole out to long-on in the fourth over.Glenn Phillips and Liton Das limped to 26 for 2 in the Powerplay. Phillips looked to up the ante as he hit Qais Ahmed, the Afghanistan legspinner, for successive fours in the seventh over to signal a change in intent, but with the asking rate spiraling, he holed out at long-on. It was the start of another collapse, the second of the night.Team hat-trick, againQais impressed with his variety and his back-flip celebrations, too. He had Smith with a ripping legbreak and Imran Khan with a topspinner off the last two balls off the 14th over. Off the first ball of the next, Keemo Paul, the only fast bowler employed by Amazon Warriors, had Liton mistime a pull straight to midwicket. Steven Jacobs averted four in four by a hair’s breadth as a strong lbw appeal was turned down, with replays proving he may have been struck a tad too high. Two balls later, he too was gone and Tallawahs were 70 for 8. It summed up a sorry tale of a season where whatever could go wrong went wrong.

Newcastle planning to replace player who starred vs Wolves

With Newcastle United firmly in the mix for European football this season, PIF's emphasis is now on making the right signings to ensure that the Magpie's foray into the Champions League is not a one-off.

Newcastle's defensive inconsistencies

Despite sitting eighth in the Premier League, Newcastle have struggled on the defensive front this season. The Tyneside outfit have conceded 45 goals this season, almost twice as many as the league's best defensive side Arsenal who have only conceded 23.

Wolves star who lost the ball 22x was worse than Toti vs Newcastle

Wolves suffered a poor 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United this afternoon

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 2, 2024

Much of this inability to keep the ball out of the net has stemmed from injuries to key players. Nick Pope's absence between the sticks has been noticeable, whilst first choice central defender Sven Botman has only managed fourteen starts this season. Useful backup Matt Target has also been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

This defensive headache for Eddie Howe has seen the Newcastle boss deploy a wide array of players to plug gaps in the defence. Once outcast Jamaal Lascelles has seen regular game time this season, whilst Dan Burn has been a regular fixture at full back, starting 21 times this season.

It is clear that PIF feel that the next step for Newcastle is to upgrade on these areas and ensure that the Magpies are ready to compete with Europe's elite.

Magpies eye Burn replacement

Speaking to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, sources around Newcastle state that the club are in the market for a new left back this summer. With regular European football the hope of those at St James' Park, O'Rourke states that the club want a “more productive” left-back option who can provide a greater attacking threat than Burn.

Newcastle defender Dan Burn.

This news will have a mixed reaction among Newcastle fans with many of the Magpies' faithful having fond memories of the 31-year-old's goal in this season's historic 4-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League. Even in recent games, Burn has impressed, with the defender earning a 7.5 WhoScored rating in Saturday's win over Wolves, the joint highest of any defender on the pitch.

A diligent servant at Newcastle, the Blyth-born fullback has been a fan favourite at his boyhood club since arriving from Brighton in January 2022. In a world in which fullbacks are often measured by their attacking output, the 6'5 tall Burn is something of an unorthodox figure in the modern game.

Having a fullback that cannot progress the ball has often left Newcastle hamstrung in attack. Playing opposite Kieran Trippier, who is arguably more comfortable attacking than defending, Burn leaves the Magpie's attack feeling a little uneven at times.

Whilst there is no denying Burn's defensive qualities, elite sides can no longer get by with fullbacks who are ineffective in the final third. Regardless of whether he's a regular starter or bit-part player, there is no doubt that Burn will continue to cement his legacy as a favourite at his boyhood club.

Oshada Fernando, Wanindu Hasaranga the stars as Sri Lanka whitewash Pakistan

The visitors made five changes to the team that was leading 2-0 in the series and still managed to outplay the No. 1 T20 side in the world

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Oct-2019

Oshada Fernando looks at the heavens after bringing up fifty•AFP

Sri Lanka’s crazy 2019 got even weirder on Wednesday, when they made five changes to the team that had won the first two T20Is against Pakistan, but still managed to pull off a whitewash – debutant Oshada Fernando producing the defining innings, before legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga took three wickets in his second successive match.Oshada hit 78 not out off 48 balls, overseeing Sri Lanka’s recovery from 30 for 3 after five overs, then 58 for 4 after eight. Very much the talisman in the innings – no other batsman made even 15 – he guided Sri Lanka to 147 for 7 on a slow Lahore surface. That total would prove 13 too many for Pakistan, who had a 76-run second-wicket partnership, and yet could never get ahead of the asking rate. Haris Sohail struck 52 off 50 balls for them, but there was the sense that the top order could have been more ambitious in the first two-thirds of the innings. After 12 overs the required rate had crept up to nine. Iftikhar Ahmed and Wahab Riaz both struck desperate boundaries in the final overs, but they had been left with too much to do. Hasaranga’s two wickets in the 18th over effectively sealed the whitewash for the visitors.Sri Lanka have never won a three-match T20 series 3-0. Pakistan have also never been whitewashed in a three-match series. That this has all been achieved without the likes of regular captain Lasith Malinga, or the Kusals – Mendis and Perera – is flabbergasting.Oshada had been good in his first forays into Test and ODI cricket, but he was arguably even better on his T20I debut, flicking his first ball in the format for four through fine leg, before playing the most serene shot of the evening second ball – a languid straight punch for six. He had 10 runs off his first two balls, and he continued to score freely, picking up frequent singles and twos, but also punishing even the slightest errors from Pakistan’s bowlers. So confident was his start that occasionally he’d even come down the track to fast bowlers. He charged Usman Shinwari to hit him over mid-off for four early in the 10th over, before pulling him fine for four next ball. Oshada was no less effective against spin, twice driving Shadab Khan for four through the offside in the 14th over. He reached his half-century off his 33rd delivery, and was only more aggressive after that, hitting a six and a four off Mohammad Amir – both on the legside – before slamming Wahab Riaz over deep square leg soon after. He stayed not out until the end, sweeping Amir aerially for four for an especially memorable boundary in the 19th over.Pakistan’s batting Powerplay went a lot better than in their two previous matches, and yet, none of their batsmen were fluent on this surface, which perhaps underscores the value of Oshada’s knock. Fakhar Zaman was bowled off his pads off the first delivery, but Haris and Babar Azam exerted a little control after that. And yet, although both batsmen looked somewhat comfortable, Pakistan went at less than six an over in the Powerplay. Their rate quickened shortly after, but not by much. They were only 63 for 1 after 10 overs. When Lahiru Kumara had Babar caught behind for 27 off 32 balls, they were 76 for 2 after 12.In fact, between overs 6 and 16 Pakistan mustered only two fours, which is really where the chase was sunk. Lakshan Sandakan sneaked in three cheap overs through this period, as Hasaranga (in addition to Kumara) made his first breakthrough, having Haris stumped, after the batsman ran down the pitch and failed to read a googly. In his next over – the 18th of the innings – Hasaranga had Asif Ali caught at long-on, before bowling Sarfaraz Ahmed for the second match in a row with another googly. After that, Pakistan needed 37 off 12 balls, and although Iftikhar and Wahab occasionally connected, a Pakistan victory seemed unlikely. In the end, they limped to 134 fo 6.Given the depleted nature of Sri Lanka’s squad, this tour was an early banana skin for Misbah-ul-Haq’s tenure as coach and selector. And Pakistan have slipped.

Rodgers must replace Bernardo with Celtic’s £19k-p/w star

Celtic turn their attentions away from the race for the Scottish Premiership title as they prepare to host Livingston at Parkhead in the quarter-finals of the SFA Cup on Sunday.

The Hoops have the chance to secure their place in the last four of the domestic competition, which is their last chance to win a cup after being knocked out of Europe and the League Cup earlier this season.

Brendan Rodgers' side are also second in the Premiership as it stands, behind Rangers, and the SFA Cup will be their last chance to win some silverware if they fail to overthrow their rivals before the end of the top-flight campaign.

Brendan Rodgers.

The Bhoys come into this cup clash off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle, in a game in which they missed a penalty, had a man sent off, and gave away a penalty during the first half.

Rodgers may now look to make some changes to the starting XI and should unleash Kyogo Furuhashi from the start in place of Paulo Bernardo, who should be ruthlessly dropped.

Paulo Bernardo's stats against Hearts

The Portuguese midfielder, who is on loan from Benfica, lined up alongside Tomoki Iwata and Matt O'Riley in the middle of the park against the Jam Tarts.

However, his outing only lasted the opening 45 minutes of the match as Rodgers, possibly with Celtic being down to ten men after Hyun-jun Yang's sending-off in mind, decided to substitute him at the break.

Paulo Bernardo

It came after an underwhelming half of football from both Bernardo and Celtic as a whole. The 22-year-old dynamo failed to provide an attacking threat in possession for the Hoops, with zero key passes and zero shots on or off target in 45 minutes of action.

This shows that the Benfica loanee did not cause too many problems for the Hearts defenders to deal with, as he did not create any chances for his teammates or force Zander Clark into making a save.

He left a bit to be desired with his work off the ball, as well, as the midfielder won two tackles and was dribbled past twice, which shows that the youngster had mixed success with his attempts to win possession back for his side.

As you can see in the table above, Kyogo offered more quality on the ball during the second half after the manager brought him on for Bernardo at the break, which is why the latter must be brutally ditched from the starting XI.

The Japan international played behind Adam Idah, who offered a strong focal point in the number nine position, and showed great desire and drive to push the team forward at times, albeit Celtic ultimately failed to get back into the match.

Kyogo's Premiership stats this season

The 29-year-old attacker has endured a frustrating season in front of goal for the Scottish giants, after his extraordinary exploits during the 2022/23 campaign.

Kyogo plundered an eye-catching 27 goals in 31 Premiership starts under Ange Postecoglou last term, but has been unable to replicate that form under Rodgers.

In 29 top-flight appearances under the Northern Irish head coach, the Japanese centre-forward has registered nine goals and three assists for the Hoops.

He has averaged one goal every 213 minutes of league action for the Bhoys this season, which is a staggering drop from one every 86 minutes last term.

Kyogo's play in possession has been far too wasteful at times as the forward has only completed 66% of his attempted passes in the Premiership, and has missed 15 'big chances' to go along with his nine goals.

Celtic winger James Forrest warms up with Kyogo Furuhashi.

Only Daizen Maeda (-2.8) has underperformed his Expected Goals by more than the Japan international, who has nine goals from 11.48 xG in the top-flight.

These statistics show that the Celtic star has not been good enough in front of goal, given the quality of chances that have been created for him this season, particularly when you consider that Idah has already scored five goals from 4.29 xG.

However, the experienced Hoops gem has excelled when paired with the deadline day loan signing from Norwich City, in the two matches that they started alongside each other.

Kyogo and Idah's stats together

Rodgers has selected his two star strikers in the same starting XI on two occasions since the Ireland international joined the club during the last transfer window.

Ireland striker Adam Idah.

The Celtic boss picked Kyogo in the number ten position behind Idah against Kilmarnock in the Premiership, and against St Mirren in the SFA Cup.

Interestingly, the Japanese marksman found the back of the net in both of those matches, which suggests that he thrived on being able to play in the pocket behind a physical number nine who can hold off defenders and do the dirty work to free up the former Vissel Kobe ace in possession.

His performance against Kilmarnock in comparison to his usual averages as a lone centre-forward for Celtic in the Scottish top-flight suggests that Rodgers should persist with him in a deeper role.

As you can see in the table above, the £19k-per-week whiz was more involved in the game in possession than he usually is in the league, with far more key passes and passes in comparison to his average.

The talented gem, who was once hailed as an "unbelievable" young man by Postecoglou, appears to be a far greater threat as a scorer and a creator when he starts alongside Idah, albeit with a small sample size of them together to work with.

This is why Rodgers must unleash Kyogo in the number ten role – ahead of Bernardo – behind the Norwich loanee when Kilmarnock come to Parkhead on Sunday, as it appears to get the best out of the 2021 signing.

Rodgers could ignite Kyogo by unleashing impressive £23k-p/w Celtic star

The impressive pair could provide enough attacking quality to fire Celtic through to the semi-finals of the SFA Cup, in the club's search for silverware this season.

'I feel guilty' – Mohammad Naveed accepts he failed to report corrupt approach

Reports say the UAE fast bowler met with a “fixer” claiming to a be a T10 franchise representative

Mohammad Naveed, the UAE fast bowler and captain facing ICC corruption charges, says he made a “mistake” in not reporting an approach made to him. There were three players caught in this investigation but Qadeer Ahmed has already made it clear that he wants to push for an appeal.According to a report in the , Naveed was approached by a person claiming to be a representative from a T10 franchise but once the 32-year old realised the person he was meeting was a “fixer” he ended the conversation.Naveed, however, faces more than just a failure to report charge. On Wednesday, the ICC charged him and senior batsman Shaiman Anwar with “contriving, or being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly, the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of matches in the upcoming ICC World T20 Qualifiers 2019.” ESPNcricinfo understands that both players, allegedly, stood to gain up to US$272,000 (approx.) if they were successful in their attempts.”I am very sincere about my game, I am very sincere about my career,” Naveed told the . “I have been successful for the UAE around the world, in leagues, for franchises. That is because I am very sincere about my game.”Now this has happened, I feel guilty. Why did I not talk to the board, why did I not talk to the ICC? It is my mistake, and I feel guilty.””My family is let down, my friends are let down. Everybody is let down. This was my mistake.Naveed defended himself by pointing to his record for the UAE. “I’m only scared of my God, not anybody else,” he said. “I speak very truly. My passion is cricket, I love cricket, my life is cricket.”I am a successful cricketer – not only in Associate cricket, but in all the world. Look at my ranking, look at my economy rate. My focus is only on cricket, not on being a bad boy.”Qadeer is in trouble for failing to disclose details of an approach and also giving out inside information while knowing it might be used for betting. The 33-year old who has played only 11 ODIs and ten T20Is for UAE agreed that he made a mistake in not reporting the approach but denied all other wrongdoing.”Regarding code breaches, I admit I failed to report a wrong approach to the ICC. I should have taken that seriously, and reported it to the [Emirates Cricket Board],” he told the . “In terms of the other breaches, for inside information and non-cooperation on things, I want to deny that. I will appeal to the ICC regarding the other breaches.”Naveed and his team-mates have 14 days from October 16, 2019 to respond to the ICC’s charges.

Crystal Palace chiefs believe they can agree deal for Premier League ace

Crystal Palace chiefs apparently believe they can agree a deal to sign a Premier League striker this summer, and the Eagles are in pole position for him.

Crystal Palace problems as Glasner era begins

The Oliver Glasner era is well and truly underway at Palace, with the Austrian taking over from Roy Hodgson last month.

Oliver Glasner eyeing Crystal Palace moves to sign two talents

The Austrian isn’t wasting any time.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 8, 2024

It's been a mixed start to life at Selhurst Park, but the job was never easy.

“I am convinced we can win many games this year in the Premier League," said Glasner after taking the Palace hot seat. "We have the organisation on one side and the players on the other side where we can be successful together. If I didn’t have this conviction I wouldn’t be here.

"In many talks with the chairman and the sporting director and in many games I watched, I got this conviction. I was looking for a project that we can improve. I don’t think Crystal Palace is at the end [of its project].”

He got off to the dream start with a resounding 3-0 win over Burnley, but a late capitulation against Tottenham in their next match resulted in Glasner tasting his first Palace defeat soon afterwards.

Despite leading for the majority of the contest, Glasner was also made to fume when his side conceded a last-gasp equaliser at home to Luton Town in their last game.

Glasner's arrival hasn't fixed the glaring issues which have haunted Palace this season, not least their glaring lack of cutting edge at times. Only Everton, Sheffield United and Burnley have scored fewer league goals than the south Londoners over 2023/2024, and that's something Glasner will be very keen to address in the summer.

Palace apparently wish to sign a new forward for Glasner when the transfer window reopens, and one such option could be Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah.

Palace chiefs believe they can agree Nketiah deal

Reports have suggested that Arsenal are ready to green-light Nketiah's sale this summer, with their loss potentially becoming Palace's gain.

According to TEAMtalk, Palace chiefs believe they can agree a deal for Nketiah, and it is claimed that Selhurst is seen as the most likely destination for him.

The Eagles have apparently done more work on a move for Nketiah than any other club, which puts them in the ascedency after they had an approach rebuffed in the January window.

The Englishman has made 24 league appearances for Arsenal this season, scoring five goals and bagging two assists, but the vast majority of those cameos have been from the bench.

"What I’m seeing with Eddie, he’s working his socks off," said Gunners legend Ian Wright on Nketiah earlier this season. "No chances really made for him. The work off the ball, fantastic, same with Jesus."
