Okay with batsmen's numbers dropping as long as we're winning – du Plessis

Tasked with batting in some of the toughest conditions in the world, the South Africa captain said players got to keep their places if they helped win Test matches

Liam Brickhill at Newlands04-Jan-2019

AFP

South Africa’s bowlers dominated headlines in 2018 and helped to make home a fortress, but on the second day at Newlands, the batsmen finally had their day in the sun. Aiden Markram kicked things off with a fluid 78 on Thursday, Temba Bavuma struck 75 to continue the good form he showed at Centurion, Faf du Plessis cracked his ninth Test ton – and first at Newlands, and Quinton de Kock played the No. 7 role to perfection, rapidly increasing South Africa’s advantage with a free-flowing fifty. There was some talk ahead of this series of Hashim Amla’s powers being on the wane, but Amla is not the only member of South Africa’s squad who struggled to find the middle of his bat in Tests in 2018. Du Plessis had a challenging year, averaging just 24.36 (over two runs less than Amla), while Markram scored his Test runs at a shade over 33, and Dean Elgar managed 36.72. Bringing up the rear, de Kock contributed his runs at just 21.77 last year. Those don’t appear to be the sort of numbers to set the Test world alight with. But, thanks to the bowlers, they were more than enough to better both India and Australia. If your bowlers are winning matches, does it really matter if the batsmen don’t score?”In a perfect world, everyone’s scoring hundreds, everyone is doing really well,” du Plessis explained ahead of this Test. “But our success rate in home conditions the last three years has been at a very, very high percentage. And that’s meant it’s been a little bit tough on the batters at home. [That’s how it will be] when you’re playing against quality seam attacks, which most teams have around the world now.”India was here, they have a great seam attack, Australia were here with a great attack, and now Pakistan. The numbers from the batters will drop a bit, but for me, and the coach, we’re okay with that. We’re okay with looking at winning cricket. Our focus is to win as often as we can, and statistically that is the case at the moment.”Indeed it is – in the last three years, South Africa have won 14 out of 19 home Tests, losing just three times.South Africa have what they believe to be the best Test attack in world cricket, and a look at the numbers makes that suggestion hard to counter. Conditions here undoubtedly help. At home, they play on pitches that usually offer pace, bounce and movement, and after his working over in the first Test against Pakistan, Dean Elgar called South Africa “definitely the toughest place in the world to bat”. He had the bruises to prove it.”It is tough,” agreed du Plessis. “I can promise you it’s not just tough for them. It’s tough on the captain as well. I also want to be scoring hundreds and averaging fifty. But it’s a good mindset in our changing room. We speak about that, and it’s something that we’re ok with. And I think you can look at our openers as examples. They are guys that front up to tough conditions all season round. And I think what makes us that little bit different to other teams is that we are okay with it. If it means failure, as long as we’re winning, then the team does buy into it.”But it is tough on young guys making their mark, playing on wickets that are a little bit spicy. And then you go overseas and you play in the subcontinent, where the ball probably spins from day one. So it’s tough at the moment for guys, but as with the captain, they just want to win games of Test cricket. They’re very happy. If we’re winning, everyone stays in the team.”Bavuma is one of the young players making his mark whom du Plessis may have been thinking about, but temperament and technique have made him the pick of South Africa’s batsmen in this series. Those characteristics have also meant he has prospered even as others have struggled. He averaged 42.14 in 2018, his best year since his debut in 2014.It has been three years, almost to the day, since he scored his maiden Test hundred at this very ground against England. Bavuma came close to a second Test ton before he ran out of partners against Australia at the Wanderers last March, but that difficult second ton continues to evade him. Be that as it may, he has now played two vital hands in two Tests, clawing the ascendancy back with his fifty at Centurion, and putting South Africa well ahead with his 75 here, sharing a 156-run stand with his captain. A ton missed, but job done.”If I look at the positive, it’s that I managed to get the team into a strong position,” Bavuma said. “I try not to focus too much on my personal ambitions and milestones. As long as I’m contributing to the cause of the team, the guys are happy with my commitment and efforts, I can also sleep with a smile on my face.”Bavuma also reiterated du Plessis’ thoughts about seam-friendly conditions in South Africa. “Everyone is using conditions to their advantage, and I don’t think we should do any different,” he said. “We’re playing at home. We know how to play at home. We’ve got a strong quartet of fast bowlers, and we want to give them everything possible to be at their best.Bavuma cashed in after a close call with the catch that wasn’t, and the judicious use of a review after he had been given out lbw, before he, like du Plessis, was eventually undone by a steepler from Shaheen Afridi. But de Kock swished his way to fifty from 59 balls, extending South Africa’s lead to 205 runs at stumps. In the coming days, South Africa’s bowlers will be the ones to, in all likelihood, seal the Test and the series, but the sunny second day at Newlands was all about the batsmen for once.

Can Pakistan end South Africa's PinkDay invincibility?

The hosts have won all seven ODIs at the Wanderers since they started wearing pink for this fixture, and will wrap up a series win if they make it eight in a row

The Preview by Liam Brickhill26-Jan-2019

Big PictureA see-sawing series turns celebratory as Pakistan and South Africa return to Johannesburg for the annual PinkDay ODI event at the Wanderers. This will be the eighth edition of the popular fixture, which has helped to raise nearly R 5 million (USD 370,000 approx) for various breast-cancer-awareness organisations over the past six years.and a crowd of 24,000 is expected with tickets sold out. There’s a special mood at these pink games, and the fixture has created some singular memories over the years, such as when bees (perhaps attracted to the hot pink) stopped play halfway through Sri Lanka’s innings in 2017, with all 13 players, as well as two umpires, lying facedown on the grass. Last year, the PinkDay ODI was the only one out of six in which South Africa managed to beat India, and three years ago Imran Tahir hit the winning runs in a one-wicket win over England. Most notably, of course, the PinkDay was also the occasion of AB de Villiers’ defining innings, when he smashed 16 sixes – and the record for the fastest ODI ton – during his 44-ball 149 against West Indies in 2015.Their misadventures with insect infestations at the Wanderers during this tour notwithstanding, Pakistan have all the ingredients to play their part in what should be another engaging encounter to add to the storied narrative of South Africa’s PinkDay games. The visitors have held their own during the three ODIs so far, even as controversy threatened to derail their tour after the second match.Chasing has been key to success in the series so far, with Pakistan winning the first match by five wickets before South Africa reversed the result to draw level and then pulled ahead at a soggy Centurion. The quick turnaround leaves no time for what-ifs and navel-gazing from Pakistan, but the momentum is with South Africa and given the history of the occasion, the hosts will be very hard to beat.Form guideSouth Africa WWLWL (completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan LLWWLIn the spotlightSarfraz Ahmed has barely left the spotlight since the second ODI, though the extra attention had more to do with his mouth than his gloves or bat. While there has been no announcement from the ICC about an official sanction for Safraz’ comments to Andile Phehlukwayo, his words have cast a shadow over the tour and on the field Sarfraz has pushed himself down the order as low as no. 8 with middling results. His actions will continue to be scrutinised, as will his returns as captain. The no. 7 position in South Africa’s XI is one of the few places in the side without a settled incumbent. Andile Phehlukwayo staked a bold claim for the position with his career-best performance in Durban, but then leaked 71 runs at Centurion. It’s a position Dwaine Pretorius might also look to fill, and behind him Chris Morris and Wiaan Mulder – both included in South Africa’s T20 squad – will also have designs on it. Another strong all-round showing from Phehlukwayo would go some way towards holding off the competition.Fakhar Zaman swivels into a pull•Getty Images

Team newsLeft-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks should get another chance on what has become his home ground with the Lions franchise, and if the track looks flat and hard South Africa may look to bolster their seam attack and lower order with allrounder Dwaine Pretorius, who also plays his domestic cricket here. If not, South Africa may look to swap Tabraiz Shamsi for Imran Tahir, who has a decent record at this ground with 7 wickets at 22.57, after Shamsi put in an inconsistent performance at Centurion.South Africa: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Reeza Hendricks, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 David Miller, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Beuran Hendricks, 11 Tabraiz Shamsi/Imran TahirSarfraz Ahmed has apologised in person to Andile Phehlukwayo for his racially-charged on-field taunt, but is yet to face any official sanction for the incident from the ICC. That issue aside, Pakistan’s selections, like South Africa’s, will be influenced by conditions. While the top orderis fairly stable, Faheem Ashraf’s seamers could put him ahead of Imad Wasim, though Imad’s handy lower-order runs at Centurion will be hard to ignore. Fakhar Zaman’s poor returns in the series could see him make way to set up Shan Masood’s ODI debut, Masood having looked in decent nick during the Tests.Pakistan: 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman/Shan Masood, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Imad Wasim/Faheem Ashraf, 9 Hasan Ali, 10 Mohammad Amir, 11 Shaheen Shah AfridiPitch and conditionsLimited-overs pitches at the Wanderers tend to provide some of the best batting conditions anywhere in the country, and 400 has been breached three times in ODIs here (including twice, famously, in the same game). The last time South Africa and Pakistan met in an ODI here, South Africa racked up 343 for 5 to win by 34 runs and anything other than a belter would be something of a surprise. Don’t be surprised, though, if there’s a little rain around in the afternoon, as there often is at this time of the year on the Highveld.Stats and trivia South Africa have never lost a Pink ODI. During the course of the third ODI, Imam ul Haq became the second-fastest player to 1000 runs in ODIs. Hashim Amla needs to score 89 to reach 500 runs at the Wanderers, entering the top five of the list of ODI runscorers at a ground where he is also just four runs shy of the record for most Test runs. Quotes”PinkDay will once again demonstrate the remarkable power of how sport can mobilise support for a cause that affects millions of people around the world.”

Everton could land ideal Branthwaite replacement in "humble" £43m-rated rock

Everton have picked up enough points this season under Sean Dyche to have placed themselves firmly in the top ten, having won the same number of Premier League matches as both Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United, who are competing for the European places.

The ten-point deduction that the Toffees received hasn’t done justice to the fact that had Everton not been punished, the club would be in contention for one of the league’s seven available European places.

Nevertheless, with success comes more suitors for your players and Dyche's side are now facing a battle to keep hold of star defender Jarrad Branthwaite, although the Merseyside club do have one name lined up as his replacement.

Everton transfer news – Federico Gatti

According to a report from Calciomercato earlier this week, Everton are keeping tabs on Juventus defender Federico Gatti’s progress with the Italian giants and haven’t given up hope of signing him in January, despite Gatti signing a new five-year contract extension at the end of October.

Everton were one of several Premier League clubs that approached Juventus in the build-up to the summer deadline in the hopes of signing the centre-half, but Juve have now tied the Italy international down to a new long-term contract.

Nevertheless, Dyche is clearly in the market for another centre-back, particularly since it has been reported that star defender Jarrad Branthwaite is a top target for Manchester United this winter as Erik ten Hag looks for options to shore up his leaky defence.

Everton could replicate Branthwaite steal by signing £4m-rated Godfrey upgrade

This central defender could be the perfect replacement for Jarrad Branthwaite.

ByAdam Scully Dec 9, 2023

Losing Branthwaite would be a colossal blow for Everton as the ex-Carlisle United central defender has contributed massively to a defence that boasts the joint-fourth-fewest number of goals conceded this season.

Federico Gatti’s stats this season

Juventus have kept nine clean sheets in 15 matches this season in Serie A which is the second-most behind Inter Milan. Gatti has played in 13 of these matches, starting 12 alongside star defender Gleison Bremer.

Club captain Danilo has been left impressed with Gatti’s contribution to the team this season and even labelled the 25-year-old as a “humble boy” who has been “an example” to the rest of the squad in the current campaign. The reason for these comments is that Gatti was playing in the fourth tier of Italian football in 2020 and is now fighting for a league title with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

One area that sets Gatti apart from the rest of the defenders in Italian football is his threatening nature inside the penalty area. In 13 league appearances, the ex-Frosinone man has scored three goals. Only Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa have managed more this term for the Bianconeri.

As a result of his impressive form with the Old Lady, the CIES Football Observatory have placed Gatti’s market value currently at £43m, having been worth merely £4m twelve months ago.

Furthermore, Gatti has actually been outperforming Branthwaite in a number of key metrics for a centre-back.

As shown in the table above, Gatti is far more adept at playing out from the back – shown by his superior record with relation to progressive passes and progressive carries – although that's not to suggest that he can't also offer a brick wall defensively, as shown by his 69.7% aerials duels won per 90.

With that being said, Everton should definitely still look to keep Branthwaite, but if the club are forced to accept an offer for him this January, the Toffees may look no further than Gatti.

Heat stay alive after Lynn fifty, Lalor hat-trick

The fancied Heat have disappointed this season but crushed an inexperienced Scorchers XI in a clash of the bottom two teams to keep their faint finals hopes alive

The Report by Tristan Lavalette01-Feb-2019

Chris Lynn powered Brisbane Heat’s chase of Perth Scorchers’ lowly 9 for 128 to bookend his team’s overwhelming performance in the field. The fancied Heat have disappointed this season but crushed an inexperienced Scorchers XI in a clash of the bottom two teams to keep their faint finals hopes alive. After being sent in, Scorchers’ misfiring batting order succumbed to disciplined Heat bowling to finish with a mediocre total on the batting-friendly Gabba. Mystery spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman bamboozled the out-of-form Scorchers with three top-order wickets as Heat’s spinners shackled the batsmen early, before seamer Josh Lalor’s hat-trick at the death capped it off.An unbeaten Lynn half-century spearheaded Heat’s easy chase down with 15 balls to spare and end their three-match losing streak.Another lamentable Scorchers performance was further soured by a hamstring injury to Shaun Marsh, who was unable to field. Having endured a fourth straight defeat in their longest-ever losing streak, Scorchers are staring down the barrel of a wooden spoon.Scorchers’ Top-order Crumbles AgainThe visitors shook up their top-order with recalled wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis promoted to the top alongside Shaun Marsh in a bid for extra firepower – the seventh opening combination used by Scorchers this season. The experiment backfired with Shaun Marsh falling cheaply in the second over followed shortly by Inglis as Heat’s strategy to use spin through the first five overs worked. Having been routed for just 79 against Renegades last match, Scorchers’ nightmare continued when hard-hitting allrounder Ashton Turner holed out for just two to gift Mujeeb his second wicket.Once the hottest batsman in the BBL, Turner suffered his fourth straight single-digit failure as Scorchers teetered at 3 for 17 after four overs. Their hopes of mustering a competitive total rested on captain Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Bancroft, who looked in sparkling touch and relished Heat’s change to pace by smashing three boundaries off Lalor. They successfully counterattacked in a quick 42-run partnership before Mitchell Marsh rashly fell to Ben Cutting’s first delivery in the 10th over and then Bancroft was bowled by a quick Mujeeb delivery to leave Scorchers once again in a major hole.Jason Behrendorff in his follow-through•Getty Images

Lalor hat-trick caps off professional Heat performanceWith the lowest scoring rate among teams in the BBL, Scorchers’ inability to counterattack has been cruelly exposed during a disastrous campaign. Youngster Nick Hobson, who impressed amid the carnage against Renegades, showed maturity to upstage his more senior team-mates but struggled to strike boundaries against Heat’s disciplined bowling.Hobson combined with debutant Clint Hinchliffe in a sensible 39-run partnership marked by hard-run singles and twos more reminiscent of the middle overs of ODI cricket. An increasingly confident Hobson stunningly smoked a slow delivery from Jack Prestwidge over long-on for the only six in the innings. He was unable to cap off a fine innings when he holed out in the final over to complete a surprise hat-trick by Lalor spread out over two overs.Heat players sedately celebrated the wicket unaware that Lalor had become just the fourth player in the BBL to conjure the feat. Lalor only realised his achievement when told by a beaming Alex Ross who had heard from the ground’s announcer.Heat recover after early Cutting wicketMuch like Scorchers, Heat decided to experiment with a new opening combination of Cutting and Max Bryant who seemingly was caught behind on 6 after nicking a wide Jason Behrendorff delivery only to be given not out.It was a golden opportunity for the struggling Cutting to end a drought and he played against type in a defensive start. After failing to score off his first six deliveries, Cutting finally lashed out with three consecutive boundaries before succumbing to the spin of Usman Qadir.Hinchliffe, whose left-arm wrist spin has drawn comparisons to Scorchers great Brad Hogg, had a disastrous start to his BBL career with a full toss promptly smashed to the boundary by Lynn. The Heat captain, who had only reached double-figures once in his past five hits, was in a belligerent mood and became the highest ever BBL run-scorer when he smashed Andrew Tye for six in the 10th over.Lynn powers Heat homeThere was some joy for Scorchers when Hinchliffe claimed his first wicket – Bryant – but they were never seriously in the hunt despite Brendon McCullum’s frustrating season continuing when bowled for 3.After not being picked in Australia’s Test team, Matt Renshaw hoped to showcase his talents but made just 15. Lynn, however, survived a contentious caught behind appeal off the luckless Behrendorff when on 44 before fittingly sealing the deal with his fourth six to ensure the Heat faithful went home happy in a rarity this season.
