Ex-Knight Rider Shakib leads Sunrisers to first win in Kolkata

Kolkata Knight Riders were only in control as long as their spinners were bowling, as Sunrisers dominated the rest of the game to consolidate their position at the top of the table

The Report by Varun Shetty14-Apr-20183:54

‘Teams will struggle to figure Sunrisers out’

Sunrisers Hyderabad panicked and flailed in a chase again, but nowhere near as much as they had against Mumbai Indians on Thursday. Their captain Kane Williamson’s half-century, and his 59-run stand with Shakib Al Hasan sealed yet another win that was set up by their bowlers, who had managed to keep Kolkata Knight Riders to 138 for 8 in 20 overs. It was Sunrisers’ first away match of the season and their third victory in three games put them on top of the points tableKnight Riders had a sluggish start to the game after they were put in, and apart from Lynn’s 49 that stretched across a brief rain interruption, they barely had a foot in the game. That was until they realised their three-pronged spin attack was virtually impossible to score off. For much of Sunrisers’ chase, Knight Riders were calling the shots; but with every over of spin bowled, the Williamson-Shakib alliance grew more confident and a calculated acceleration against pace at the right time put to rest the prospect of a collapse-and-recovery style win.Knight Riders tie themselves up with their tacticsKnight Riders made all the team changes that were demanded of them: Vinay Kumar was left out along with Rinku Singh, and the teenage duo of top-order bat Shubman Gill and seamer Shivam Mavi came in.Sunil Narine did not have a good time against Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday. Robin Uthappa did. So when Uthappa was pushed up to open – for only the second time since the end of the 2016 season – against a vastly superior fast bowling attack, it didn’t seem plausible that Gill and Mavi would end up batting one after the other, at No. 7 and 8.Shakib Al Hasan loops one up•BCCI

As it turned out, Uthappa’s plan to get his eye in from a familiar batting position didn’t work out. Chris Lynn and Nitish Rana brought the momentum with their second-wicket stand of 39, before a red-hot Billy Stanlake cramped Rana on the cut – his most productive shot of the evening – and had him lift one to Manish Pandey’s right at point. The former Knight Riders batsman took the first of two world-class catches with a lunge to his right and a grab on the second attempt as he fell towards the ground. It was at this point that Knight Riders made the mysterious punt of sending Narine at No. 4. Perhaps the decision was informed by the fact that they were going at less than seven per over, but it was a strange one nonetheless – Narine had only batted at No. 4 once before this innings. In the Pakistan Super League. If quick runs were the requirement, they didn’t come. When Narine well for 9, he had consumed 10 balls and hit only one boundary. It had caused a telling change in the batting order.Sunrisers stay true to characterAs expected whenever they go out, Sunrisers had clearly set roles for their bowlers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was allowed to find swing early on, Stanlake was given the license to hit the deck hard, and Kaul was the pacer who would then go full. Perhaps the only way it didn’t go right was that Lynn enjoyed the predominantly back-of-a-length bowling that fed his punches through and over the infield as he backed away. But he was stopped on 49, trying to drive off that very same length against Shakib, who held on smartly to his left off his own bowling. The left-arm spinner had a dot-ball percentage of 44% through his spell and his two wickets forced Dinesh Karthik to drop anchor. Knight Riders tried to replicate their full-attack policy that had worked against Super Kings after they’d lost five wickets cheaply, but there was no coming back tonight. Stanlake got Andre Russell to splice one between point and third man, and Pandey was there once again, this time sprinting backwards before lunging to hold on.For the 10th time in 16 matches since the start of the 2016 season, Sunrisers managed to restrict a team to less than 150 while bowling first. And they did it despite Rashid Khan going for 31 and taking no wickets.A laboured chase
Every time Knight Riders had a seamer on, Sunrisers pummelled them. Every time a spinner came on, the scoring dropped drastically.Wriddhiman Saha had Sunrisers scoring at close to 11 an over halfway through the Powerplay, forcing Karthik to call on Narine, whose loosener down leg side found Saha’s edge.Knight Riders then discovered the magical effect of spin on this pitch. Between overs four and ten, Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav kept Sunrisers down to 30 runs while dismissing Shikhar Dhawan and Pandey. At 62 for 3 in ten overs, Sunrisers desperately needed boundaries. Williamson gave them that with a pull off the toe-end in the 11th over, following it up next ball with a more controlled shot. It seemed like the battle signal; Karthik turned to Russell in the next over and Shakib took his last three balls for 14.The eventual split between bowlers said the story: Knight Riders’ fast bowlers went for 79 runs in seven overs, while their spinners went for 60 in 12.Sunrisers sealed their first win at Eden Gardens with an over to spare, and it was the ninth win for a chasing team this season in ten matches.

Liverpool: Second "class" star ruled out vs Spurs alongside Thiago

Liverpool will be without another of their first-team stars for today’s Premier League game vs Tottenham Hotspur, according to a fresh update.

Who are the injured players at Liverpool?

At Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold has missed the last four matches with a hamstring injury, but Jurgen Klopp has delivered a positive update on the vice-captain’s fitness by revealing that he is set to be involved for the fixture in North London, whether this be starting the highly-anticipated encounter or being named on the bench.

Thiago Alcantara and Conor Bradley have both been on the sidelines for a longer period of time and the boss has admitted that the duo will remain out of action and therefore won’t be available for the trip to the capital, but they aren’t the only ones who will be staying at home rather than taking on Ange Postecoglou's side.

On Wednesday night, Stefan Bajcetic made his return to domestic action when he replaced Curtis Jones on 79 minutes during the 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City, but having previously been absent from training since March before featuring in Austria last week, the defensive midfielder appears to have suffered a slight setback in his recovery.

How long is Stefan Bajcetic out for?

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Friday, Klopp confirmed that Liverpool will be without Bajcetic for the encounter vs Spurs after sustaining another minor problem.

As quoted by the club’s official website, he said: “Stefan had a little, little setback. The problem with Stefan is I can imagine everyone wants to see him play more – I want – but we have to be really careful. And now it’s a little, little, little tiny calf issue. That’s how it is when you are six months out. And we try everything to get him up to speed without pushing him.

"We make a very specific plan for him but in the end it’s disappointing for him, of course, but for us as well that he got another one. So we have to take him out a little bit. He can work on pretty much everything else but not playing.”

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

How much does Stefan Bajcetic earn?

Bajcetic currently pockets £40k-per-week which he has more than earned during his 21 senior appearances since getting promoted to the first-team fold last summer, therefore, it will be a blow to the boss to not have the youngster at his disposal once again.

Spain’s youth international has posted six contributions (four goals and two assists) in 54 outings since the start of his career, and he’s also a versatile operator having been deployed in four different positions, including at centre-back, right-back and slightly higher up in the midfield alongside his usual role sitting in front of the backline.

Bajcetic even already has experience playing in the Champions League so there’s no doubting that the 18-year-old will go on to become an integral member of the senior squad in seasons to come, having been hailed a “class” player by journalist Josh Bunting.

Aston Villa: Young star is now growing rapidly under Emery this campaign

Aston Villa have a bright star on their hands who is being touted as a potential superstar in his homeland following his excellent start to 2023/24, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Aston Villa?

The Villans got over the disappointment of their 3-2 defeat to Legia Warsaw in Europa League action last week by achieving a commendable 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Ollie Watkins proving to be the difference between the sides.

As per BBC Sport, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery took delight in his side being able to keep Chelsea out in SW6, stating in the aftermath of the encounter: "The clean sheet was very important because we conceded a lot of goals away. It was important to win through a clean sheet. We needed to find a way where we were stronger than we were against Newcastle and Liverpool. Today was tough but we competed very well."

Villa's official account on social media platform X have shown that new signing Nicolo Zaniolo is taking to life at Villa like a duck to water meanwhile, as their post accompanied by a video regarding the Italy international read: "Nicolo Zaniolo recorded more successful dribbles (4) than any other player during Chelsea vs Villa."

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are considering recalling youngster Louie Barry from his loan at Stockport County in January to secure him a move to play at a higher level. 20-year-old Barry has made a magnificent start to life on loan at Stockport County, registering six goals and two assists from his opening 11 appearances for the Sky Bet League Two outfit in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Next up for Aston Villa is a home clash against Everton in the Carabao Cup third round as Unai Emery looks to bring some silverware to Villa Park this season.

How has Jhon Duran fared this campaign?

As per reports in Colombia via Sport Witness, there is 'overflowing enthusiasm' in Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran's homeland that he can form an exciting partnership with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz with the Colombian national side.

Emery views Duran as someone with plenty of room for development that he can take on further at Villa Park and there is a feeling in Colombia that he can come on 'leaps and bounds' under the Spaniard's tutelage.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.

The 19-year-old has started the new campaign in a promising fashion, registering four goals from eight outings for Aston Villa encompassing all competitions, as per Transfermarkt. Coming of age in the English top-flight, Duran has been in a consistent vein of form and managed to rack up an average match rating so far across the Premier League season of 6.96/10, according to Sofascore.

Journalist Dean Jones has complemented Duran's start to proceedings in a recent conversation with GIVEMESPORT, stating: "I mean, it's great that he's now coming through with some goals and at £18 million, it really could end up as a bargain."

Looking ahead, Aston Villa fans will hope that Duran can continue to be a nuisance for defenders over the next few years at Villa Park and will be keen to see the striker develop further alongside Ollie Watkins.

Australia and Pakistan to play tri-series in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe will combine tours of Australia and Pakistan into a T20I triangular series, followed by five ODIs against Pakistan

Zimbabwe Cricket, still reeling from their inability to qualify for the World Cup and the sacking of the organisation’s entire coaching staff, will host Australia and Pakistan in July for a T20I triangular tournament and then Pakistan for five ODIs. Neither country will play a Test in Zimbabwe, although the FTP had Australia pencilled in for one Test and Pakistan for two, further underlining ZC’s desire to restructure and avoid costly home Tests.”Playing two of the game’s biggest teams will provide us with a very welcome litmus test as we forge ahead with our plans to develop a stronger Zimbabwe side capable of consistently competing and winning against the best,” Faisal Hasnain, ZC MD said. But ZC’s plans appear, at best, hazy. After hosting West Indies for two Tests in October last year, ZC strongly indicated it would consider playing less longer-format cricket at home, given the costs and the fact that Zimbabwe is not part of the new Test Championship. Instead, it focused its energy on 50-over cricket, in the hopes of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup. Failure to do that has left Zimbabwe Cricket in limbo, which came to a head when all coaching staff – from national coach Heath Streak to under-19 coach Stephen Mangongo – were fired. Graeme Cremer lost the captaincy and Tatenda Taibu was relieved of his duties as convener of selectors as well.ZC held a press conference on Tuesday to outline its plans for the resumption of domestic cricket – the 2018-19 season was not concluded as World Cup qualifier preparations began earlier this year – as well as plans for an academy. But the issue of coaching staff was not on the agenda. They would need to attend to the allocation of backroom staff with haste if Zimbabwe are to play international cricket again three months’ time. The prospect of the tours of Australia and Pakistan being curtailed has been looming large for months given the financial state of Zimbabwean cricket, and matters came to a head with the country’s failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup set to hit them hard in the pocket. In February, there was doubt over the fate of Pakistan’s tour to the country, with ZC’s managing director Faisal Hasnain saying as much.”Finances may not allow the [Pakistan] series to go ahead because we don’t get a lot from our TV contract, and the series ends up – the production costs result in huge losses,” Faisal Hasnain, ZC’s managing director had told “Given our current cash situation, in order to balance our books, we may actually have to either renegotiate the format or we may have to postpone it until such time as we are ready to play.”

Mustafizur's injury situation frustrates Walsh

Head coach hopes to put in place a proper communication system to report injuries so they cost players as little time as possible

Sidharth Monga in Dehradun04-Jun-2018

AFP

Bangladesh don’t have world-class wristspin or mystery spin to compete with the Afghanistan spin wizards on the slow and low Dehradun surface, but they sure have a bowler who can be a handful in these conditions. Except that he is not playing this series. Mustafizur Rahman is out for four weeks with a hairline fracture in his foot, which he stuck out to try to stop a straight drive in what turned out to be his last IPL match on May 20.Mustafizur came back, didn’t inform the BCB or the physio how bad the pain was, and made it worse when he turned up for a warm-up match. Bangladesh coach Courtney Walsh says a clear message has been sent to Mustafizur that this is not on. That he owes it to the national team to give them a chance to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible.”We didn’t know about his injury,” Walsh said. “That he was injured wasn’t even the frustrating part. There is nothing we can do with the injury, but he is a key component in the set-up of the team. We are going to miss him a bit. It has given a chance for someone else to step up. Had we known about his injury earlier, I don’t know if we could have done something to get him back on the park quicker, but the game he came to play, a warm-up game… if we would have known about the injury, for sure he wouldn’t have played those games.”This is a scenario impossible to imagine with teams like Australia and South Africa and England. They are known to pull fast bowlers out of the IPL just as precaution. They manage the workloads of their players to the last detail. None of their bowlers can bowl more balls in the nets than what their medical teams prescribe. Here, Bangladesh’s young talisman didn’t even inform his own team of how bad his injury was.”It’s a cause for concern for me,” Walsh said. “It’s the second time Mustafizur has come back from the IPL with an injury. We need to look at that. We need to assess that. Unfortunately, when you play the game there is chance you will get injured. We need to make sure we keep him fit and get him stronger because he is young, talented and has everything to offer. We need to get his mind right, and get his bowling up to the standards he can be.”When asked if the BCB manages to control the workloads as closely as Cricket Australia does, he said the onus ultimately was with the individual more than the board. “There are reports passed back and forth as to have an idea of the workload,” Walsh said. “Then we try to manage that when he comes back. We get an idea of the workload once he comes back. That is the reason why he got some time off when he came back because he had played quite a number of games in the IPL.”That is something we look to monitor but at the end of the day, the player himself has got to own that responsibility because you are working for two different environments. Something that we look to manage, but we can only do so much. There is nothing we can do about injuries. Once you get injured, you have to get the injury right.”Walsh said they had learnt an important lesson, and going forward they will look to put in place a proper communication system to report injuries so they cost players as little time as possible.

Finest signing since Raphinha: Leeds star is now one of “the league’s best”

Leeds United knew it was going to be tricky to pick up a result on the road at Brentford.

After all, heading into this Premier League showdown at the G-Tech Community Stadium, Keith Andrews’ Bees had only lost once on their own turf from eight contests, with wins against Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Liverpool sticking out.

Thankfully, though, football is sometimes not played to the script, as Leeds clinched a late leveller against the West Londoners to extend their own unbeaten run in the league to three matches.

One star stood out so much for Daniel Farke’s visitors that he could now be considered the Whites’ best signing since Raphinha entered the ranks for only £17m, with the Brazilian now a world beater on the books of Barcelona.

Why Raphinha is Leeds' best recent signing

The number 18 would dazzle Premier League defences from minute one of his arrival, with his former boss Marcelo Bielsa stating that he adapted “very quickly” to what was expected of him in the high-intensity environment of the English game.

Indeed, the £17m signing would have plenty of end product to go alongside his audacious tricks and flicks, with his debut season seeing him bag six goals and pick up nine assists.

Georginio Rutter is, of course, fondly remembered for his equally entertaining spell at Elland Road, but it would take the £35.5m recruit far more time to settle in his new surroundings, next to Raphinha, instantly being thrown in and thriving.

Moreover, for such a modest fee, it’s hard to argue against the South American being one of Leeds’ best modern pick-ups, with the Whites throwing lots of cash on unsuccessful attackers since Raphinha’s two-season stint at the club.

The eye-watering £21m addition of Luis Sinisterra stands out in that regard with the Colombian making just 26 appearances in West Yorkshire.

Thankfully, in the summer, Farke and Co spent their money more wisely, with Noah Okafor up to two Premier League goals already as a smart £18m investment.

But, he isn’t the summer arrival who can now be heralded as Leeds’ best acquisition since the memorable days of Raphinha.

Leeds star becoming their best signing since Raphinha

Farke was a relieved figure at the full-time whistle, with Leeds fully deserving of a share of the points.

Still, it would take all the way up to the 82nd minute mark for Leeds to clinch a draw, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin popped up with a “touch of quality” again – as the Athletic’s Beren Cross labelled it – when calmly directing an inviting Wilfried Gnonto delivery past a stationary Caoimhin Kelleher.

Calvert-Lewin hasn’t had a good few years when it comes to scoring goals but he’s not a man in form, continuing to bail his side out of some sticky situations.

That header was his fourth goal on the trot in the Premier League for his new team. Raphinha would also regularly come in clutch for the Whites, away from being an entertaining star, with his final ever goal for the West Yorkshire titans helping survival to be secured against – coincidentally – Leeds’ opponents on Sunday.

Leeds must be thanking their lucky stars now that they gambled on the Sheffield-born striker’s services in the summer, with the deal to bring in the 28-year-old on a free transfer looking like a steal, much like Raphinha, as the goals keep flowing for the reinvigorated marksman.

Leeds would have known that if they could get the very best out of Calvert-Lewin again, away from his recurring injury troubles, that they would be beaming ear to ear about the shrewd decision to pick him up, with the in-form number nine boasting a hefty 62 Premier League goals across his up-and-down playing days.

He will hope these injury problems have passed now, with Farke declaring him an “unbelievable human being” after the 1-1 draw in London, amid shouts, too, from the German that he is one of “the best English strikers we have here in the Premier League”.

Leeds will need to ensure they don’t get too carried away, though.

Still, if Calvert-Lewin were to keep up this red-hot goalscoring form across the whole season, survival should be comfortably reached, which will surely only solidify his label as being one of the club’s best recruits since Raphinha briefly called the Premier League home.
