Canada survive Kenjige hat-trick to level series at 1-1

Losing four wickets in four balls could not shake Canada’s confidence as they defeated USA by five wickets thanks to an unbroken 92-run stand between Saad Bin Zafar and Dhanuka Pathirana

USA’s quest to reclaim the Auty Cup for the first time in 26 years will come down to the series deciding third match after Srimantha Wijeratne’s half-century laid the platform for Canada to secure a five-wicket win at Maple Leaf Cricket Club on Wednesday.Wijeratne made 59 off 69 balls and helped Canada race to a Powerplay score of 70 for 0 chasing a target of 203 before USA fought back with a hat-trick from 26-year old left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige. Wijeratne was the first, followed by Navneet Dhaliwal and Rizwan Cheema. The three batsmen fell off the first three balls of the 23rd over, which followed on the heels of Timil Patel dismissing Usman Limbada off the last delivery of the 22nd.USA’s four wickets in four balls however couldn’t shift the balance decisively enough as Saad Bin Zafar and Dhanuka Pathirana ground out an unbroken 92-run stand for the sixth wicket to take the hosts home with seven balls to spare.Kenjige had taken the new ball in the chase, operating with two slips and a silly mid-off. But Wijeratne dismantled that plan by smashing a pair of fours over mid-on followed by two more boundaries through cover in a 16-run second over and Kenjige was quickly removed from the attack. Canada coasted through the rest of the Powerplay scoring at seven an over before seamer Roy Silva slowed things down with a maiden in the 11th and then took out Nitish Kumar for 37 in the 13th. Unperturbed, Wijeratne brought up his half-century off 55 balls, driving Timil through cover for his ninth boundary. He added another 38 for the second wicket with Limbada before the partnership was broken, leading to the most dramatic portion of the match.Kenjige, who began his second spell in the 19th over, struck off the first three balls of the 23rd. Wijeratne defended down the wrong line to an arm ball, Dhaliwal fell prey to the same trap and, having seen the left-arm spinner’s tactics from the team tent, Cheema played well inside the line of a delivery pitching on middle stump. Only this time it spun away to take the off stump. The hat-trick was sealed and Kenjige finished his spell conceding only six runs in his last seven overs, with four maidens.Nosthush Kenjige sprints off after bowling Rizwan Cheema to complete a hat-trick•Peter Della Penna

Canada’s two new batsmen, Zafar and Pathirana, were content to see him off , and then increased their tempo as the pitch flattened out under the afternoon sun.The closest USA came to ending the stand was in the 46th over, when Zafar slashed at Ali Khan and the resulting outside edge raced past the wicketkeeper for consecutive boundaries. Pathirana struck the winning runs with one ball to go in the 49th, a misfield by Camilus Alexander at mid-on letting the ball reach the rope.Pathirana then enacted a bizarre celebration by running straight to Alexander at mid-on, shook his backside at Alexander and finally stood up to gesture at the name on the back of his jersey. While Alexander laughed it off, his team-mates appeared quite rankled during post-game handshakes, including Silva, who played under Pathirana’s captaincy when the two were together at Colts Cricket Club in Sri Lanka’s domestic first-class tournament in 2009.The war of words between Alexander and Pathirana has been ongoing since the ICC WCL Division Three tournament in May. Both men field at slip and have been in each other’s ears at every chance. Their verbal sparring has added extra spice to the USA-Canada rivalry leading into Thursday’s series decider. In the face of such drama, it was nearly forgotten that Timil whacked a career-best 79 off 86 balls – doubling his previous highest score for USA in 50-over cricket – to bail the team out. They were 74 for 5 in 23 overs and then 159 for 8 in the 45th but managed to push their innings until the final ball of their allotment. Kenjige had helped here as well, playing second fiddle in a 43-run ninth-wicket stand.

Tottenham: Ange Wants "Extraordinary" Prem Star At Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is in the market for a midfielder if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg departs, and Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher is wanted for that role.

Who will Spurs sign?

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz have all officially joined Spurs this summer, but there could be plenty more to come.

These deals follow on from permanent moves for Pedro Porro, who signed from Sporting Lisbon after his original loan stint, and Dejan Kulusevski folllowing an 18-month loan spell from Juventus.

Spurs are also actively trying to sign another centre-back, as confirmed by Postecoglou himself recently, who said he wants defenders who can play in an aggressive formation.

“It's not done yet," said Postecoglou at the weekend.

"We need bolstering in that central defensive area. We need defenders who can work in an aggressive formation, defend well & behind them. We'll be looking to bring in a couple in that area in the coming days."

Following on from that comment, the Spurs head coach updated his stance after Tottenham's entertaining pre-season encounter with Barca last night – saying it could largely depend on outgoings.

"We've to see what happens with outgoings," explained Postecoglou.

"But, the potential is there to bring in one more centre back after van de Ven."

It appears exits could well be crucial in determining Tottenham's future transfer activity, with the potential signing of a new midfielder being no exception.

That is according to The Telegraph and journalist Mike McGrath, who claim Postecoglou is personally in the market for a new central midfield ace should Hojbjerg depart.

The Dane has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this window and some outlets suggest that it is going to happen sooner rather than later.

Gallagher, who could well leave Chelsea before deadline day, has been mentioned as a target and The Telegraph claim he is "wanted" to potentially succeed Hojbjerg.

Nothing else is said beyond that line in terms of more detail, but it appears Gallagher to Spurs is still very much on.

How good is Conor Gallagher?

conor-gallagher-newcastle-transfer-news-premier-league

The Englishman's best top flight campaign to date came during a 2021/2022 loan spell at Crystal Palace, where he finished the season as Patrick Vieira's best-performer by average match rating (WhoScored).

Gallagher also racked up eight goals and three assists that year, showcasing he has what it takes to become a successful player at Tottenham.

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, commenting on the player's development last year, shared how impressed he was with Gallagher's development.

“His development is extraordinary and outstanding," said Tuchel in 2022.

“He is one of the key players at Crystal Palace and he has made a huge step in his development up front.

“He was a pleasure to coach in pre-season – he has so much positive energy, so much energy in general and so much work-rate to give that he can of course be a big help and a big influence.”

However, if a deal is to be done, Chelsea may need to lower their reported £50 million valuation.

Dai leads Papua New Guinea to second on WCL points table

A five-wicket victory over Scotland in Port Moresby meant they are only two points behind Netherlands

Papua New Guinea have moved up to second place on the World Cricket League points table on the back of beating Scotland by five wickets in Port Moresby. Bouncing back in fine style, with Mahuru Dai’s 63 off 54 balls, they chased the target of 204 with two overs and five wickets to spare. The small target was helpful considering only one of the top five could move past 25. Captain Assad Vala had taken the score to 130 for 5 before handing the reins over to Dai, who came in during the 31st over, and went on a boundary-hitting spree. He struck 10 fours, which accounted for 63% of his runs, and ensured Scotland’s bowlers, despite the work they put in to push the chase to the 48th over, were defeated.A much larger portion of the blame fell on the batsmen, which would have been doubly disappointing considering Scotland had won the toss. Matthew Cross made 91 off 120 balls – accounting for nearly half of his team’s total – as his team-mates fell in a heap around him. The next highest score was 22.

Liverpool Could Land Next Gini In "Unbelievable" £44m Gem

Liverpool have been credited with an interest in a long-term midfield target as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to complete his transfer activity and ensure his club is well-placed for an auspicious season.

What's the latest on Liverpool's midfield hunt?

Following a report from Anfield Watch, the Reds are considering a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes, having agreed a £44m fee for the former Sporting Lisbon before his move to Molineux.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Liverpool have prioritised a No. 6 this summer and still scour the market after failing to sign both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, with both joining Premier League rivals Chelsea.

However, given the mass exodus at Anfield, there is likely room for Nunes to join, and the Merseyside team could complete their rebuild by belatedly making a swoop.

How good is Matheus Nunes?

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola once heralded Nunes as "one of the best midfielders in the world", and while this seemed perhaps somewhat heightened praise, he has glistened in the centre of the Old Gold midfield since joining last year.

Indeed, the Portugal ace made 34 appearances in the Premier League last season, completing 82% of his passes, making two tackles per match and succeeding with 61% of his attempted dribbles.

While the 24-year-old might've taken some time to acclimatise to the rigours of English football last season, he kicked the current campaign off with aplomb, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.40 as Wolves narrowly fell to defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford, incredibly winning 14 of his 24 ground duels, making five interceptions and three tackles, and creating two key passes.

matheus-nunes-gini-wijnaldum-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

This all-engulfing midfield display epitomises exactly what Klopp needs from his midfield, with such tenacity and intensity likely combatting the crux of last year's issues, where the Reds' sapped midfield failed to adequately protect the defence.

It brought shades of former Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum, with the Dutchman hailed as "irreplaceable" by Richard Jolly after playing his industrious role superlatively at Anfield after signing from Newcastle United for £25m in 2016, making 237 appearances, yet only scoring 22 goals and supplying 16 assists, keeping things tidy with an infallible passing prowess, never falling below an 87% success rate.

Nunes only scored one goal and assist apiece last season, with his skills also lying outside the plundering of direct goal contributions, but given that he ranks among the top 18% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, he is clever in possession.

Just like his 87-cap Netherlands counterpart, Nunes could be "perfect" under Klopp's stewardship, as Wijnaldum was once lauded by his former Liverpool manager, and his acquisition could restore the cohesiveness of the side.

Once praised as "unbelievable" by ex-teammate Goncalo Santos, Nunes would be a credit to the Liverpool side, and given that Klopp and co have clearly done their homework on the £85k-per-week maestro, he could slot into the system without seam.

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Rachel Priest will turn out for the Sydney Thunder in the third season of the Women’s Big Bash League, after two seasons with the Melbourne Renegades.”I’ve really enjoyed my time in the WBBL so far,” Priest told .”I enjoyed my time at the Melbourne Renegades but I felt it was time for a change and to move to such a professional and competitive team really excites me. I’ve played a lot against Alex Blackwell, Rachael Haynes and Rene Farrell. It’s a very exciting squad that also has a lot of young talented players.”Known for an explosive batting style, Priest scored 512 runs for the Renegades while captaining the side, and also effected 22 dismissals. She was the leading run-scorer in the 2017 edition of the Kia Super League in England with 261 runs in seven innings for Western Storm, including a century and two fifties. Her 36-ball 72 against Southern Vipers in the final helped Western Storm clinch the title by seven wickets. Her run in the Super League marked a return to form after a disappointing World Cup in June-July, where she scored 125 runs in six matches. She missed New Zealand’s tour of UAE for the series against Pakistan, with the team management asking her to work on improving her physical conditioning.Thunder, who won the inaugural edition of the WBBL, had failed to make it to the semi-finals last season. They will get their 2017-18 campaign underway against the Renegades on December 9 at North Sydney Oval.

Kingma's hat-trick sets up Netherlands' sweep of Namibia

The seamer’s maiden five-wicket haul in List A cricket knocked over Namibia for 181 and consigned them to the last place in the WCL Championship

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Dubai08-Dec-2017
ScorecardVivian Kingma is never shy about showing his excitement after taking a wicket. Or six. And when that sixth wicket caps off a hat-trick like it did in a five-wicket win against Namibia at the ICC Academy, that unbridled joy gushes out like a geyser.Kingma’s first wicket after Netherlands had sent Namibia in came in the fourth over when Karl Birkenstock, playing his first match of the tournament, spliced a pull to mid-off. The rest of his haul came via bowled, lbw or caught behind the wicket as Kingma swung the ball regularly past the outside edge. By the end of the Powerplay, Kingma had Stephan Baard edging to slip and Craig Williams nicking behind to debutant wicketkeeper Scott Edwards. In the interim between Kingma’s twin three-wicket spells, Gerhard Erasmus made a splendid 81 off 75 balls. Erasmus played the Dutch spinners with ease, casually whipping the left-arm duo of Roelof van der Merwe and Pieter Seelaar against the turn through the leg side. In the 25th, he slogged offspinner O’Dowd into the ICC Academy car park for a massive six.But at the other end, Erasmus struggled to find a willing ally in his effort to repel the Dutch bowling unit. Zane Green tickled an edge off van der Gugten to Edwards before Kotze fell to O’Dowd. Ryan ten Doeschate, bowling his first over for Netherlands since 2011, began with a full toss but four balls later found his radar to get Jan Frylinck wafting outside off for a healthy edge to Edwards to make it 125 for 6.Erasmus brought up a run-a-ball fifty and, with only the tail to provide support, he targetted van der Merwe. He hit four boundaries in the 28th and 30th overs to chase the left-arm spinner out of the attack, perhaps regrettably so as rather than looking at posting another 250-plus total, they collapsed to Kingma.Peter Della Penna

After seeing Erasmus cut him for four in his first over back, Kingma began the 34th with a fuller ball and got the batsman edging a drive behind for his fourth wicket. JJ Smith had his off stump knocked back, driving at a fullish delivery to give Kingma his maiden List A five-for. Desperate to shield the stumps, Bernard Scholtz shuffled across to the hat-trick ball and missed a belated stab. The umpire had raised his finger even before Kingma turned mid-sprint to look back to confirming the landmark.A return catch by van der Merwe a few overs later ended the innings in 36.4 overs, meaning the Dutch had almost an hour to bat before the scheduled lunch break. They reached 60 for 2 in 14.3 overs as Wednesday’s centurion Ben Cooper flashed an edge behind off Williams to trigger the interval. When play resumed, the pitch began to deteriorate markedly. Williams and Sarel Burger each snagged a second wicket within a few overs after the restart while spinner Scholtz bowled Sikander Zulfiqar with a ball that kept low after the batsman had charged down the pitch, leaving the Dutch needing a suddenly tricky looking 77 runs to win.But ten Doeschate calmed the situation with his 11th List A fifty. True to his average of 64.24 in one-day cricket for the Netherlands at the start of play, the allrounder didn’t skip a beat in his first innings back in orange, cruising to an unbeaten 65 off 58 balls. He took his time to settle before sizing up Scholtz’ left-arm spin in the 34th over, pulling for four before consecutive shimmies down the pitch produced sixes over long-on and long-off to end the spinner’s day.A delightful straight drive off Tangeni Lungameni brought up ten Doeschate’s half-century off 46 balls as the Dutch needed 24 to win off the final 12 overs. Having thrown in the towel in the face of ten Doeschate’s demoralising dissection of their attack, Lungameni conceded the winning run with a short ball that was signalled as a wide. The win completed Netherlands’ fourth sweep in seven rounds of the WCL Championship tournament as they ended on 22 points, three points clear of second-placed Scotland. Namibia finished in last place with just three wins from 14 matches, finishing three points behind Nepal to take the wooden spoon.
