South Africa’s attack got overs in the legs but not many wickets in the column in their final competitive outing ahead of the four-Test series against England, which starts at Lord’s on Thursday. After declaring overnight on 382 for 4, South Africa’s frontline bowlers dismissed only two England Lions’ batsmen, one of whom they will come up against in the Tests.Keaton Jennings was bowled by Morne Morkel on what was a tough day for the pack. Chris Morris was the only other specialist bowler to taste some success – he had Sam Robson caught behind – while Kagiso Rabada went wicketless. Theunis de Bruyn’s medium-pace claimed the other two wickets while Vernon Philander, who is recovering from an ankle injury, sat out the match. South Africa are hopeful he will be available for the first Test.South Africa’s sole specialist spinner, Keshav Maharaj, had a decent workout and bowled 18.1 overs for 46 runs while JP Duminy also turned his arm over, albeit it expensively. His eight overs cost 51. De Bruyn bowled seven overs and had more to show than any of his team-mates. He got both Gary Ballance and Sam Billings out lbw; Ballance got his eye in ahead of the Tests with a half-century and shared a 136-run third-wicket stand with Tom Westley, who went on to score the only century of the match.Overall, South Africa may not have got all the preparation they would have hoped from the rain-affected match. They batted once and although opener Heino Kuhn, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock were among the runs, stand-in captain Dean Elgar and Duminy – whose form has been a long-term concern – did not cash in. De Bruyn, who played ahead of Aiden Markram, was out for a duck.On what appeared a placid pitch, the bowlers toiled. Particularly Rabada, whose lean patch on the tour continued. The fast bowler has managed only eight wickets in six ODIs since South Africa arrived in the UK, sat out the T20I series, and did not find his rhythm in this game, going for 59 in his 16 overs. Should Philander not to be able to take the field, it will be up to Rabada to lead South Africa’s attack, while Morris seems to be the preferred allrounder. Andile Phehluwakyo is also in the squad.South Africa travel to London on Sunday to finalise preparations for Lord’s with coach Russell Domingo back in the camp. Domingo had to return home on a family emergency last week but will oversee the team at the start of the series.

Celtic: Rodgers Can Find Lethal Abada Partner In Move For 26 y/o Whiz

Brendan Rodgers returned to Parkhead for a second spell last month to replace Ange Postecoglou as Celtic manager and has been backed by the board during the summer transfer window.

Who have Celtic signed this summer?

The Hoops officially confirmed the signing of Polish central defender Maik Nawrocki on a five-year deal from Legia Warsaw on Wednesday, which has made him the fifth arrival so far.

Australia international Marco Tilio, Norwegian midfielder Odin Thiago Holm, and South Korean duo Hyun-jun Yang and Kyeok-kyu Kwon have also joined the Scottish giants ahead of the 2023/24 Scottish Premiership campaign.

However, that may not be the end of their business as Rodgers may look to strengthen his side further before the deadline passes, which is in over a month's time.

One ambitious target the Bhoys have been linked with a possible swoop for is Manchester United central midfielder Donny van de Beek, who is also being eyed up by the likes of Milan, Sevilla, and Crystal Palace, among others.

How good is Donny van de Beek?

The Netherlands international has struggled during his time in England with the Red Devils but his Ajax form indicates that the quality is there for him to be a terrific signing for the Hoops to partner Liel Abada in attack.

Van de Beek has only started 11 Premier League matches in three years since his move to Old Trafford in 2020, which included a loan spell with Everton at the start of 2022.

Prior to that, the 26-year-old whiz, who former Scotland defender Alan Hutton recently claimed would be an "outstanding" signing for Celtic, produced 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 first-team outings for Ajax from a central or attacking midfield position.

The Dutch gem could be a brilliant fit for the number ten role in Rodgers' 4-2-3-1 system, which would see Abada line up alongside him as part of the trident of midfielders behind Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic winger Liel Abada.

Celtic's Israel international was one of the team's top performers last season.

He plundered ten goals in 13 Premiership starts, alongside 21 appearances as a substitute, and ended the campaign as the club's third-top scorer – only behind Jota (11) and Kyogo (27).

Abada also created ten 'big chances' for his teammates and was only rewarded with five assists, which suggests that the other attackers within the squad failed to make the most of his creativity.

Van de Beek, however, could come in and provide the 21-year-old wizard with a reliable scorer alongside him in the attacking midfield positions to finish off the opportunities that he creates.

The former Ajax star scored 28 goals across his last three Eredivisie seasons, which works out at around nine goals per league term.

This could make him an upgrade on Celtic's current options in that position if he is able to translate that form over to Scotland as no central midfielder managed more than six Premiership strikes.

Van de Beek also created 1.8 chances per game during his final league term with Ajax in 2019/20, which only Matt O'Riley (2.1) and Jota (1.9) outperformed for the Hoops throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

Therefore, Abada and the Manchester United man could form a lethal partnership as part of Rodgers' three attackers behind Kyogo due to their respective ability to score and assist goals on a regular basis.

Of course, there is a question mark over whether van de Beek can return to the form he showcased at Ajax but his impressive statistics in his home country suggest that is a gamble worth taking.

Man United Confident Of Landing Both Hojlund And 26-Year-Old Ace

Manchester United are currently trying to juggle two separate transfers at once for Rasmus Hojlund and Sofyan Amrabat but according to a report from TeamTalk, it seems they are confident of getting both deals over the line.

What is the latest Manchester United transfer news?

The Red Devils have not been short on transfer links this summer, with plenty of big names rumoured to be on their way to Old Trafford. As the side have been focused on restocking their squad and ensuring they have adequate depth ahead of 2023/24, already bringing in Mason Mount and Andre Onana, it means that plenty of names have been mentioned as having deals in the pipeline and bids have already been placed for a few stars over the summer.

One of the biggest names linked with Old Trafford is Harry Kane. The striker looked as if he could indeed be on his way to Man United, but more recent updates have suggested Spurs won't let him move to another Premier League side. It means that Bayern have now edged in front, but a fresh report has stated that the Red Devils are still keeping tabs on the situation.

Two of the names that are looking a lot closer to moving to the club though are Hojlund and Amrabat. There have been twists and turns concerning both deals, with Hojlund now the subject of a bid from PSG and Amrabat not yet having anyone match the asking price for his services. United have bid for the former of the two and have also made contact with the latter, but as yet, no deals have been sealed.

Are Manchester United signing Rasmus Hojlund and Sofyan Amrabat?

Rasmus Hojlund

Now, according to a report from TeamTalk on Friday, it seems as though, despite all these other factors, United feel transfers for both players can be pulled off after Erik ten Hag demanded new transfers.

It states that despite PSG making their own offer, the Red Devils are "confident" that they will still be able to land the Atalanta man. It also adds that they want to continue their business by bringing in Fiorentina's Amrabat and are confident of doing so, but that they just need to shift two of their current crop of midfielders before they can advance that deal.

Of the two, Amrabat appears to be near the top of his game right now. All of his performances for Morocco in the World Cup caught the attention of many and drew high praise from some of the biggest figures in the game. Fabio Capello even made a comparison that the Fiorentina man will likely be proud of, as he called the midfielder the "Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco." It means Amrabat is clearly viewed in high regard and perhaps even has a similar level of talent.

If that is the case, then United signing Amrabat and exciting forward Hojlund together could be an excellent move from the side as they look to push on in the Champions League and Premier League during Ten Hag's second season in charge.

Pujara, Rahane tons power India to 344 for 3

High-quality centuries from two high-quality India batsmen have put them in command of the Colombo Test

The Report by Alagappan Muthu03-Aug-2017Stumps 3:03

Maharoof: Sri Lanka can’t let India reach 500

In addition to all the runs, a contest came India’s way in Colombo, and they were ready for it thanks to the aptitude of Ajinkya Rahane and the appetite of Cheteshwar Pujara. Centuries from two of India’s top five and 344 first-innings runs by stumps on the first day is exactly the position a team 1-0 up in a three-match series would want. Especially on a pitch that doted on the spinners. The conditions – nowhere near drastic, but certainly challenging – fostered high-quality cricket. The scoring rate was a healthy 3.8 per over, but the outside and inside edges of the Indian batsmen bore more red marks than they had done in Galle. Only one of them proved fatal, though – the captain Virat Kohli was caught splendidly by Angelo Mathews at slip for 13 off Rangana Herath. The rest were smuggled wide of the fielders skillfully and carefully. And with time, they disappeared completely. At the forefront of this operation was a man nominated for the Arjuna award, on the day he was playing his 50th Test, securing his 4000th run and his 13th century. Pujara found the spotlight rather amenable and he put on display all the qualities that have made him a magnet for runs.He was unflappable, putting behind him a mix-up that led to KL Rahul’s run-out for 57. He was game-aware, for that wicket had led to another, pushing India from 109 for 1 to 133 for 3. But mindful of not letting the opposition get on a roll, he accelerated from 14 off 58 at lunch to 89 off 140 at tea and finished unbeaten on 128 at stumps.Rahane at the other end found his timing straightaway and took time out of his schedule to put on a batting clinic, shifting deep in his crease to whip anything even slightly short through midwicket, and wading down the pitch upon the first sign of flight to hit down the ground. It was the kind of counterattack Mitchell Johnson and Australia had faced in Melbourne in 2014. And it appears there is plenty more to come. That moment early in day, when Dilruwan Perera won a review to trap Shikhar Dhawan lbw for 35, almost seemed like a dream.Things could have been so different. Sri Lanka armed themselves with three spinners, but barring Perera, who threatened both edges of the bat with his drift and turn, they couldn’t manufacture enough pressure to worry the Indians. But they did try.Pujara, with a reputation for annoying spinners in the same way as a pop quiz on Friday evening, nearly edged to slip when on 1 and only just avoided short-leg’s hands in the last over before lunch. He spent 30 balls without scoring after being beaten by Herath in the 21st over. But none of that perturbed him. He waited for the mistakes, he suckered some of them into coming his way with his constant forays down the pitch and went to tea with 70 runs off his latest 71 balls. While there was a six during this spree, his best shot was a cover drive, for not only did it exemplify his swiftness down the pitch, but also the ability to counter a misbehaving ball. It was the 42nd over and Pujara was halfway down when he realised Perera had managed to drift it away from his reach. But by adjusting his momentum and stretching his front leg a little further across, he got close enough to the ball to thump it with a straight bat.Rahane offered a different challenge with his sense for the ball and silken timing. And they were both so good that he didn’t need to worry unduly about getting right to the pitch of the ball or waiting patiently for the rank long hop, and put away even the good balls. He whipped the bowlers through midwicket (18 runs), launched them through or over cover (26) and drummed them down the ground (34) with ridiculous ease. Protecting so many parts of the ground proved futile for the Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal.Rahul might well have enjoyed his team-mates’ success, but for the longest time it seemed like he would be the first to reach a hundred. He had spent his first few days on the tour locked in hospital, staring at fluorescent lights. He had been told he would have the chance to finally play some cricket, out in the sun, with fresh air and no doctors. So naturally he wanted to stay outside for as long as possible and so well was he accomplishing that aim that he scored his sixth successive fifty in Test cricket, equalling the Indian record set by GR Viswanath and Rahul Dravid, playing some superb shots. There was a short-arm pull against debutant Malinda Pushpakumara over deep midwicket when the length invited that shot about as much as a cactus tempts a person to sit on it.But a mix-up – Rahul hit to short cover and wanted the single, Pujara did too, then he changed his mind – and Rahul was forced back indoors, under the glare of the fluorescent lights again.

Man City’s Dream XI As £35m Signing Replaces Riyad Mahrez

It sums up Pep Guardiola's need for perfection that he has looked at a Manchester City side fresh from winning the treble, and decided that improvements are needed.

After waving goodbye to Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez so far this summer, and with Kyle Walker's future also remaining uncertain, the Premier League champions look set to welcome reinforcements this summer.

It won't be difficult to convince players to make the move to The Etihad, either. After all, at this stage, the Manchester club can almost guarantee silverware. They have just been that clinical in recent years.

With that said, we've taken a look at how Manchester City could line up next season, taking a look at four players who could arrive.

CB: Josko Gvardiol

RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Though some doubts were cast by RB Leipzig's director over the completion of the move, Josko Gvardiol could yet become a Manchester City player before the end of the transfer window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is still on, with a verbal agreement reached, albeit without the completion of a medical as of yet.

City will want to avoid any further complications, and simply get the deal over the line in what will see their backline reach a new and improved level.

RB: Benjamin Pavard

Benjamin Pavard

As already mentioned, Walker's City future remains uncertain. And, according to Romano, if the England international opts to complete a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich this summer, then Benjamin Pavard will go in the other direction.

A different kind of quality to Walker, Pavard's ability to play as a centre-back as well as a right-back, is certainly an asset that City could use to their advantage next season.

It remains to be seen whether Walker decides to make the move this summer, however.

CM: Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong

Since bidding farewell to Gundogan this summer, City have only welcomed Mateo Kovacic to boost their midfield options, after failing in their pursuit of Declan Rice, who eventually completed a move to Arsenal.

That failure could yet open the door for Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, however. The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, before the Red Devils secured the signature of Casemiro. And, now, City could be in pole position to make their move.

According to reports in Spain, De Jong could be used in a swap deal with current City midfielder Bernardo Silva, as Barcelona pursue a deal for the Portugal international.

After all that past speculation, if De Jong joined City, it would certainly rub salt into the wounds of those at Old Trafford.

RW: Michael Olise

Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise.

Once again potentially proving their ability to replace players with relative ease, City could be set to welcome Crystal Palace's Michael Olise following the departure of Mahrez to Al-Ahl.

According to Romano, Olise has a release clause of around £35m, which would give interested club Manchester City a fairly cheap deal in today's market.

The winger impressed at Selhurst Park last season, scoring twice, and assisting a further 11 goals in the Premier League.

Still only 21, Olise could yet reach several more levels, too.

With that said, here's how Manchester City could line up next season:

Tottenham Could Land Bale Heir In £50m "Livewire"

There has been an update regarding Tottenham Hotspur's apparent interest in Nottingham Forest forward, Brennan Johnson…

What's the latest on Brennan Johnson to Tottenham?

With the Daily Mail previously reporting that the Lilywhites are eyeing a move for the 22-year-old should Harry Kane leave the club this summer, the same publication is now suggesting that the north Londoners could be willing to offer players as part of a deal to bring the Wales international to N17.

As per the report, both Joe Rodon and Djed Spence could potentially be on the table as a possible bargaining chip in Spurs' bid to land Johnson, with the defensive duo having previously worked under Steve Cooper at Swansea City and Forest, respectively.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

The piece notes that the City Ground outfit are not likely to budge on their £50m valuation of the 5 foot 10 speedster, hence why Daniel Levy and co could look to serve up Rodon and Spence to try and reduce the asking price, with the pair seemingly surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

While £50m may appear a rather steep sum for a player who has just a solitary season of top-flight football under his belt to date, if Spurs can strike a cash-plus-player deal instead it could well prove an astute move, with Johnson having sparkled in recent years.

Having chipped in with 26 goals and assists as part of Forest's successful promotion push during the 2021/22 campaign, the one-time Lincoln City loanee also made a rather smooth transition to life in the Premier League last time out, after scoring eight goals and providing three assists from his attacking berth.

Lauded as a "livewire" by journalist Ciaran Kelly last season, the emerging gem has also caught the eye at international level to date, with national team boss Rob Page describing him as "arguably one of the best counter-attacking centre-forwards in the Premier League at this moment".

Gareth Bale

With Page and Wales having seen former talisman Gareth Bale announce his retirement following the World Cup last year, there has been suggestion that Johnson could be the man to replace the ex-Spurs man as the new attacking figurehead for his country.

It also could be said that the youngster can be the potential successor to Bale in north London, with the £30k-per-week sensation also an exciting, attacking threat who can make the difference in the final third.

One key attribute that Johnson shares with his former international colleague is his "frightening" pace – as described by compatriot Joe Allen – with Bale having also been the subject of the same praise from Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane back in 2013, prior to his eventual move to the Bernabeu.

As the one-time Southampton showed at his pomp – including on that night against Inter Milan in the Champions League in 2010 – he had the ability to breeze past players with ease, with Johnson also sharing that trait as he ranks in the top 9% among his European peers for progressive carries per 90.

As his form last season – and in the second tier prior to that – has showcased, the latter man also has the end product to go with that startling speed, ensuring he could attempt to match the levels of Bale, who scored 72 goals and registered 58 assists in 237 games for the club in total during his two spells in the capital.

While comparing Johnson to such an iconic figure may appear foolish, it is worth pointing out that prior to hitting 21 league goals in his final season before moving to Madrid, Bale had actually never reached double figures for top-flight goals, thus showcasing that the Forest ace could follow a similar trajectory and truly explode in the years to come under Postecoglou's watch.
