Progress under a new management team is steady, rather than spectacular, and it won’t have gone unnoticed to those betting on Premier League markets that those on the blue half of Merseyside are shooting anxious glances over collective shoulders.

The battle to avoid tumbling through a trapdoor into the Championship has become tighter than ever, with Everton priced at 2/1 in Premier League relegation odds to slip out of English football’s top flight for the first time since 1951.

If they are to avoid suffering that fate, then Dyche will need to build on solid foundations. He is famed for making his teams tough to break down, and he currently has the perfect last line of defence at his disposal.

Jordan Pickford is an established England international and a man that would not look out of place as the first name on any team sheet.

Fortunately for Toffees fans, he has committed to a new contract that is due to take him through to 2027. He has said of those terms: “Everton is a massive club. The past few seasons have not been what we wanted but we now have a manager who I believe will point us in the right direction and get us up the table. It’s definitely my aim to be successful at this club.”

Pickford has been a mainstay at Goodison since 2017, becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in British history when a move from Sunderland was made, and he remains fully committed to the cause despite obvious difficulties.

Pickford added on future ambitions: “This contract will take me to more than 10 years at Everton and I want to build a legacy here to put myself up there with the likes of Neville Southall to be one of the best keepers to have played for Everton.”

That will be music to the ears of Toffees followers everywhere, but it remains to be seen whether such dreams become a reality. If Everton were to lose their Premier League status in 2023, would Pickford stick around to help them bounce back?

Hugo Lloris is slowly edging his way towards the exits at Tottenham, and there has been plenty of speculation to suggest that Pickford figures prominently on recruitment radars in north London and may become the subject of another big-money transfer at some stage.

Spurs’ cause would certainly be aided if they were trying to do business with a second-tier club. Everton supporters will, as they continue to clutch at any straw which falls within reach, want to give no thought to losing their No.1, but will Pickford’s new deal end up lasting four years as intended or a mere four months?

West Ham United secured a crucial victory over Southampton yesterday to edge further away from the Premier League relegation zone, and it will hopefully inject some spark into David Moyes’ side.

This was the club’s first league win since the end of February, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The Irons struggled to retain possession during the tie, but they managed more shots than the Saints with Nayef Aguerd ultimately scoring a header during the first half which proved to be more than enough to secure all three points.

Moyes will have been happy to see players such as Lucas Paqueta and Said Benerahma getting back into some sort of form, with the duo receiving ratings of 7/10 and 7.3/10 via Sofascore for their displays, although there were still a couple of bad performances.

Tomas Soucek endured a disappointing match, taking just 33 touches and completing only 11 of his 21 attempted passes. Indeed, he was somewhat of a passenger in the West Ham midfield that sought to establish a foothold in the match.

As Football.London's Jonty Colman noted, he was 'sloppy at times' in possession, a notion backed up by the fact that the Czech lost possession on 15 occasions throughout the clash. Also poor from a physical standpoint, he won just six of his 19 defensive duels.

That said, Moyes may well be disappointed at another one of his players for their abject display – Danny Ings.

How did Danny Ings perform against Southampton?

Ings’ 65 minutes on the pitch were extremely underwhelming, and it’s no wonder he was brought off for Michail Antonio.

The striker made just seven passes at a success rate of 47%, 15 fewer than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, as he failed to link up well with his teammates.

What was even more damning is that the ex-England international took no shots at all during the match.

West Ham correspondent for the Athletic, Roshane Thomas believes Ings doesn’t quite fit into Moyes’ tactical plan, saying: “I don't think this system works for Danny Ings. He's often too isolated up front. Hasn't quite clicked barring his two goals against Nottingham Forest. Antonio has great work rate so he has no issues playing as a lone striker. But Ings has struggled in that role.”

Taking just 25 touches in a game – 18 fewer than Fabianski – is often a sign that a player is isolated and Ings didn’t quite receive the service he required to make a meaningful difference.

Moyes signed the Englishman to score goals and a tie against his former employers in Southampton should have been the perfect opportunity for him to add another couple to his tally for the club.

If it wasn’t for Ageurd’s winner, the Hammers may well have dropped more vital points and with Ings responsible for scoring the goals to maintain the club’s league status, he has only heaped further pressure on Moyes.

Could Spurs sign Maddison this summer?

Various reports linking the 26-year-old to Spurs have been circulating in the past fortnight with some sources even suggesting that he looks certain to join them over Newcastle.

However, other claims have also stated that Maddison to Spurs isn't as advanced as some might say, and there appears to be consistently differing bits of news on the matter.

One thing that seems certain is the Premier League top four hopefuls are interested in his signing this summer, coming amid their search for a new manager.

Antonio Conte's departure has left the door open for chairman Daniel Levy to hire a permanent replacement while Cristian Stellini and assistant coach Ryan Mason take interim charge in the meantime.

Whoever comes in, whether it be the heavily linked Vincent Kompany or even a sensational return for Mauricio Pochettino, will be tasked with shaping the Spurs team in their own image – having a say on who Tottenham sign in the transfer market.

As such, reliable journalist Romano, writing in his CaughtOffside column, has shared an update on the club's efforts to sign Maddison. Indeed, the transfer reporter says Spurs definitely have the England international in their sights – but are waiting for their potential new boss to give the green light before bidding.

He explained:

“Tottenham are monitoring James Maddison for sure, also Newcastle have his name on their list since last August as he’s always been appreciated.

“We have to understand who’s going to be the new Tottenham boss to see if they will bid for Maddison, as at the moment it’s on standby.”

Should Spurs splash the cash on Maddison?

Regardless of who succeeds Conte, we believe the Lilywhites quite simply must move for Maddison.

Spurs have arguably been without a central creative presence since Christian Eriksen's departure in 2020, which makes the need for one all the more pressing.

As per WhoScored, Maddison certainly has the quality to succeed at Tottenham – having stood out as Leicester's shining light and best-performing player in an otherwise dismal campaign.

Scottish champions Celtic are currently on course to wrap up a second successive league title having moved 12 points clear at the top of the table, with the Parkhead outfit's primary focus at present set to be the upcoming Scottish Cup semi-final clash with rivals Rangers.

A major concern heading into that meeting is the fitness of first-choice centre-back, Cameron Carter-Vickers, with the Daily Record reporting that the United States international is currently carrying a knee injury.

As per the report, the 25-year-old – who was absent from the weekend win over Kilmarnock amid concerns about the artificial pitch at Rugby Park – could well still feature against the Light Blues later this month, albeit with there a possibility that the former Tottenham Hotspur man may have to undergo surgery following that Hampden showdown.

Even with the title looking all but secure, it would still be of concern for Ange Postecoglou and co to be without the Southend-born menace for the remainder of the campaign, having been an "outstanding" asset over the last 18 months or so, as per club captain Callum McGregor.

If the 6 foot 1 ace is set for a spell on the sidelines, the Old Firm giants will be able to call upon the likes of Carl Starfelt, Yuki Kobayashi and Stephen Welsh in the centre of defence, although Postecoglou may well be in need of further depth in that position over the coming weeks.

As such, with Moritz Jenz having moved on in January, the Bhoys could find that added reinforcement in the form of academy star, Bosun Lawal, with the 19-year-old having already been on the cusp of the first-team in recent times.

Who is Bosun Lawal?

For all of the other central defenders at Postecoglou's disposal, young Lawal could well represent an ideal replacement for Carter-Vickers in the side, with the towering Irishman seemingly possessing the same, dominant characteristics as that of the 12-cap machine.

The teenage titan has notably been described as "powerful" and someone who can "defend so well aerially" – as per his ex-Watford colleague Troy Deeney – with those traits undoubtedly similar to that of Carter-Vickers, who has won an impressive 73% of his aerial duels in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Equally, as per Deeney, the exciting prospect is also adept both "in and out of possession" as a marker of his quality on the ball, with that also a trait that is shared by his fellow defender, who boasts a standout pass accuracy rate of 92% in the league this season.

While Lawal has only been restricted to just one senior appearance for the club to date – after featuring off the bench in the cup triumph over Morton – a more prominent role could well be on the cards in the months and weeks to come, having been "working hard" in first-team training late, as per Postecoglou.

The £640-per-week youngster – who has scored six goals and laid on two assists in 19 appearances for the club's 'B' team this season – has been a "real find" for the Glasgow outfit, as per coach Tommy McIntyre, with the club having fended off Premier League interest to sign the defender from the Hornets back in 2021.

With clubs south of the border again sniffing around in the hope of landing the teen sensation in the near future, the potential absence of Carter-Vickers could offer Lawal the chance of vital minutes in the senior set-up, potentially helping to ensure that he is persuaded to stay at Celtic Park for the long haul.

Mauricio Pochettino is now seemingly the favourite to take over as Chelsea's new manager after both Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann were ruled out of a move to Stamford Bridge recently.

What's the latest on Chelsea's manager search?

According to The Guardian, the former PSG boss is now the front-runner to take over in west London after holding positive talks with the club in recent weeks.

Competitors Nagelsmann and Enrique are both said to be out of the running, although no official approach has been made for the 51-year-old, with Chelsea seemingly happy to take their time as Frank Lampard continues as interim manager.

Chelsea may face competition from Pochettino's former club, Tottenham Hotspur, who are also on the lookout for a new boss after sacking Antonio Conte, but it seems as if the Argentine has been on Todd Boehly's radar for some time, as he was considered as the replacement for Thomas Tuchel before Graham Potter took over.

It would not be a surprise if the former Southampton boss is the man in the dugout for Chelsea next term, and he could be the man to finally get the best out of £88.5m signing Mykhailo Mudryk, who has struggled immensely since his January switch from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Could Pochettino unleash Mudryk?

While some Chelsea fans may have already written off Mudryk after a disappointing start to life in England, he is still only 22 and had fewer than 100 senior appearances to his name in Ukraine before moving to Stamford Bridge.

There is clearly a talented player there, as he had contributed an incredible ten goals and eight assists in just 18 appearances in the first half of the season for Shakhtar, including three goals and two assists in six Champions League outings, which saw him labelled as "frightening" by journalist Josh Bunting.

Nearly every player at Chelsea has been guilty of underperforming this season, with Lampard clearly also unable to get the best out of his squad, and under Pochettino next season, every player would surely be afforded a fresh chance to prove themselves.

The Argentinian manager certainly has history with some of the top wingers in Europe, having worked with Heung-min Son at Spurs and Kylian Mbappe at PSG, with those two players trailing only Harry Kane in terms of goals scored under Pochettino.

Son would join Spurs in the summer of 2015 under the Argentine but, like Mudryk, struggled immensely in his first season at the club, managing just four goals and one assist in 28 Premier League appearances. Since then, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best in the league over the past seven years.

Mudryk is at Chelsea for the long term, having signed a contract until 2031, and if he is given regular game time under a world-class coach, then perhaps he could go on to become one of the best in the league, as we saw from Son in his time working with Pochettino at Spurs.

وأوضح: “نحن فنيًا أقل من منتخبات مرشحه للفوز باللقب، ولكن الاستعداد النفسي وزرع طموح لدى اللاعبين يزيد من فرص تحقيق اللقب، يوجد لدينا أكثر من لاعب لن يلحق بكأس أمم إفريقيا المقبلة فيجب أن نعطي كل خبراتنا وأدائنا وروحنا القتالية لهذه البطولة، الجانب النفسي قد يكون له مفعول السحر”.

وأردف: “فنيًا أنا قلق جدًا، لا أستطيع بناء صورة كاملة عن روس فيتوريا وقيادته لمنتخب مصر حتى الآن لأنه لم يخوض مباريات قوية منذ توليه المسؤولية، يجب على فيتوريا من اليوم تثبيت التشكيل للحفاظ على الانسجام، مسألة تغيير عناصر من مباراة لأخرى يجب تغييرها”.

واستطرد: “كل المحترفين بداية من محمد صلاح مرورًا ونجومنا في الداخل يجب أن يعرفوا أن عليهم مسؤولية كبيرة”.

وأتم: “أتوقع تألق عمر كمال عبد الواحد وإمام عاشور مع المنتخب، سيصنعا الفارق ويجب الاعتماد عليهما بشكل أساسي وتوظيفهما بشكل هائل، كل اللاعبين سيكون عليها حصار قوي جدًا مثل صلاح وتريزيجيه ومصطفى محمد”.

What’s the latest Man United news involving Garnacho?

Garnacho has featured heavily in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, making 29 senior appearances in all competitions. The 18-year-old has contributed to nine goals but has been out injured with an ankle problem since the middle of March.

The Argentine’s current deal was set to expire in 2024, but it was announced on Friday that he has signed a new deal through to 2028. It was also confirmed by Ten Hag that the winger would not be released to represent Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup.

Taking to Twitter, Daily Express reporter Alex Turk described it as a "huge boost" for United.

Good news for the Red Devils…

Garnacho recently made a personal request to Ten Hag, asking the manager to let him join up with his Argentina colleagues for the Under-20 World Cup which would result in him missing the FA Cup final.

That wasn't ideal from a Red Devils perspective, however, they should be able to call upon I'm at Wembley in June, and this contract update is also good news.

Still in the early stages of his career, Garnacho has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months, so knowing his long-term future could be at Old Trafford is exciting.

He appears to be a star in the making, and should he pen an extension, you’d expect that he’ll be looking to break into Ten Hag’s first-choice XI over the coming years.

Garnacho has started just four Premier League games this season, but over time, he could become a key player for United, with Paul Scholes believing he may become a “superstar” and the club’s next Cristiano Ronaldo.
