Rangers must ruthlessly ditch Ryan Kent

Glasgow Rangers are currently licking their wounds following last night’s shambolic 7-1 defeat at Ibrox, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men having now shipped 16 goals in just their opening four Champions League games amid what’s been a miserable return to life in Europe’s premier competition.

As the post-mortem continues following the Gers’ inexplicable second-half collapse at the hands of a rampant Liverpool side, one man who is perhaps rightly under scrutiny is Ryan Kent, with the explosive winger having been somewhat anonymous up against his former club.

The expectation would have been for the former Anfield youth product – who joined the Old Firm outfit on an initial loan deal in 2018 – to have a point to prove against his previous employers, although the 25-year-old was one of a number of figures who simply went under against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The £15.75m-rated forward had been criticised prior to Wednesday’s clash for his lack of impact and work ethic in last week’s defeat on Merseyside, with pundit Frank McAvennie suggesting that the Englishman is the “biggest failure” for the Glasgow side at present.

The Oldham-born speedster has been linked with a return to the Premier League in recent times – with former boss Steven Gerrard reportedly keen on a reunion at Aston Villa – with the £18k-per-week man facing an uncertain future with the Scottish giants with just under a year left on his current deal.

As McAvennie suggested, however, “nobody is going to touch him” – referring to possible suitors – if his work rate does not improve, with Kent having done himself little favours with that meek display last night.

The former England U20 international was restricted to just 22 touches in his 76-minute outing, failing to provide a single key pass and also failing to record a single successful dribble, while also winning just one of his four total duels on the night.

The Scotsman’s Andrew Smith suggested that it was a ‘typical Kent performance’ due to his inability to make an impact in the final third, while Football Scotland’s Euan Robertson suggested that the 5 foot 8 star simply ‘went missing’ in the second half, before his eventual withdrawal.

Pundit Neil McCann was notably critical as he suggested the fleet-footed forward had “disappeared” amid that second-half collapse, while also stating that Kent can have “so much more influence” than he is currently.

Such a performance will likely be of real concern to manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, with the Dutchman perhaps considering the player’s place in the side, as well as whether it is worth fighting to try and keep the contract rebel beyond the end of the season.

On recent evidence, it could well be time to ditch the one-time Bristol City loanee both for this weekend’s clash with Motherwell, as well as potentially in the long term.

Leeds got it right with Robert Snodgrass

Leeds United have made plenty of notorious transfer howlers over their history, with many combining to result in their 2004 relegation.

They then spent 16 years wallowing in the Championship and even League One, where they would be forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel due to their financial constraints.

Whilst there were a few blunders during this period too, they largely made some smart signings which helped to elevate them to a position where Marcelo Bielsa could lead them back to the Premier League.

One such signing who came and went before the legendary Argentine took over was Robert Snodgrass, who the Whites poached as a youngster from Livingston. It was reported that they only had to unload the £35k compensation fee to get him to join.

He spent just four years at Elland Road yet managed to feature an impressive 191 times. During this period, he scored 41 times and set up a further 40 goals, a sensational return.

However, financial constraints would once again force the club to offload one of their key assets, as Norwich City came calling and only had to pay £2.5m for his services.

Whilst it was likely an underpayment, Leeds’ manager at the time Neil Warnock still recorded an astronomical profit of 7,042% on the Scot.

Snodgrass might have been sold on for more in the future, but the only saving grace is that he never again reached the levels he had done for the Whites. The closest he would come to replicating his tally at Leeds after leaving was with the Canaries and Hull City, scoring 14 goals for both clubs.

It must have delighted the Elland Road hierarchy to see sports reporter Ian Abrahams label the winger “so poor” whilst playing for West Ham United.

The 35-year-old now lines out for Hearts in the Scottish Premiership and is yet to score in his opening five games as his team occupy seventh place in the table.

Although other clubs might have sold the winger on for higher fees than what Leeds first did, it was the Whites who earned the best profit margin from the initial price that they paid and also got the most out of him on the pitch.

They got it right with this deal.

Rangers: Colak was the villain vs Ajax

Glasgow Rangers’ European nightmare finally came to an end on Tuesday night as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were beaten 3-1 by Ajax at Ibrox.

The Gers ended the group stage with zero points from six games as the Dutchman’s men were outscored 22 goals to two against Liverpool, Napoli and the Dutch giants – becoming the worst team in the history of the competition in doing so.

Steven Berghuis opened the scoring as a brilliant team move from the away side ended in him inadvertently chipping the ball into the left corner, with Leon King leaving it as he appeared to think the shot was going wide.

Mohammed Kudus made it 2-0 before the half-hour mark as James Sands allowed him too much space in the box and the forward’s shot deflected off King to beat McGregor.

Rangers huffed and puffed in the second half and finally got themselves on the scoresheet in the 87th minute as James Tavernier converted from the spot after substitute Rabbi Matondo was fouled.

That only turned out to be a consolation, though, as Francisco Conceicao ran off the back of King and sent Borna Barisic away before rolling the ball into the back of the net.

Whilst King gave a helping hand to Ajax in all of their goals, the real villain for the head coach on the night was starting number nine Antonio Colak.

The Croatian striker has been in phenomenal form in the Premiership this season, scoring 11 goals in 12 appearances so far, but he ended the group stage of the Champions League without a goal contribution to his name.

He had the unenviable task of leading the line for a struggling Rangers team but did not do himself justice with his performance as he allowed himself to be dominated with ease by the Ajax defenders.

Colak needed to offer his team an out ball at the top end of the pitch to allow the rest of his teammates to get up the pitch, to create worthwhile attacks, and he was unable to do that.

As per SofaScore, he lost 80% (4/5) of his individual duels and was dribbled past once, whilst failing to make a single tackle in his 60 minutes on the pitch.

These statistics show that he was bullied by former Light Blues man Calvin Bassey and the rest of the Ajax defence, which meant that the ball kept coming back at the Gers backline – putting them under pressure.

He offered very little in possession when he did have the chance to control the ball. The former PAOK man completed only five passes and lost the ball five times from 12 touches – failing to register an effort on goal or a key pass.

Therefore, the Gers lightweight was the real villain for van Bronckhorst’s side as his failure to hold the ball up, or offer quality when he did get the chance to attack the Ajax defence, was a huge hindrance to the team as it affected the overall performance by allowing the Dutch side to pile the pressure on the likes of King and Sands.

West Brom struck gold with Dara O’Shea

Over what has been a tumultuous season thus far for West Bromwich Albion, few have actually improved their standing in the game with the recent form of the club.

Before Tuesday night’s win, the Baggies had won one of their last 12 Championship games, and despite gaining three points most recently, still sit three points adrift in 23rd.

Relegation form such as this for a club that was in the Premier League just over a season ago was unthinkable, and for Steve Bruce his position became untenable.

Carlos Corberan will now enter looking to see what players he can rely on to get them safe, first and foremost, before dreams of a return to the top flight can become possible.

Few names spring to mind, but one that has held his own during the tough times is 23-year-old Dara O’Shea.

At a time when experience is often favoured over youth, he has proved that he boasts a maturity far beyond his years.

It even led Bruce to label him a “future captain” with a “bright future” at the club.

The qualities that have helped him to stand out this season have been outlined in his average SofaScore rating of 7.06, bettered only by John Swift, who has upheld the majority of the creative burden for the side.

The Republic of Ireland international has played every minute of their league campaign this season, which makes the fact that he is averaging 3.2 clearances, 2.1 interceptions and 1.1 tackles per game even more impressive.

O’Shea has been a defensive stalwart at a time when the club was in desperate need of any shining light.

His exploits at such a dark time have likely led to his sharp increase in value, which has gone from just £810k in October 2020 to £3.6m in October 2022: a mammoth 344% increase in just two years.

West Brom certainly struck gold with this academy graduate who has quickly become a mainstay at the club.

With the new manager now in place, any success he gains in the future will likely be built off the solid foundations that the youngster brings.

Markram, Mulder star in South Africa's series win

West Indies collapse from a position of strength as South Africa take series 3-2

South Africa won their first T20I series since March 2019, and first in six series, by successfully defending the highest total of the five-match series against West Indies in Grenada. The victory earns coach Mark Boucher and captain Temba Bavuma their first T20I trophy and means South Africa will leave the Caribbean triumphant in both the Test and T20I series. After choosing to bat first, South Africa posted 168 for 4 thanks largely to the continued excellence of Quinton de Kock and his acceleration in the middle-overs. De Kock brought up his third successive half-century of the series, and saw South Africa through a 49-run Powerplay and most of the period between the 7th and 15th over, in which they scored 89 runs at 9.66. He put together 128 for the second wicket with Aiden Markram, who top scored with 70.That proved to be the difference against a misfiring West Indian line-up. Tabraiz Shamsi turned in his most economical effort (four overs for 11 runs) while Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder conceded less than eight runs an over to ensure West Indies could not keep up with the required scoring rate. Notably, South Africa rebalanced their side to ensure they had six, frontline bowling options, including a seam-bowling allrounder, and that strategic change worked well.South Africa have now won three of the 11 T20I series where the final game has effectively been a decider. Meanwhile, West Indies have won just three of their last 10 T20I series, one against Bangladesh and two against Sri Lanka.Highest partnership of the series South Africa tried a different combination in the top three for this match and though Temba Bavuma’s promotion to open the batting did not work, Markram made a strong case to be considered the permanent partner to Quinton de Kock. The pair’s 128-run stand, the highest of the series for either side, laid the foundation for a total in excess of 180.Both de Kock and Markram brought up half-centuries; de Kock’s was his third in the series and Markram’s his fourth in nine T20Is. Impressively, they both scored all around the ground, with Markram’s 70-runs an even split of 35 each on the off and on side, with boundaries including his signature cover drive, the cut and aerial shots in the ‘v’.De Kock was stronger square of the wicket, with 28 runs on the off-side and 32 on the leg-side and boundaries mostly on the off-side apart from the slogs off Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein for his two sixes. De Kock’s 225 runs are also the most by an individual batter in a bilateral series. The slowdown While South Africa would have been pleased to keep things moving through the middle-overs, their concerns around the finishers remain. They scored just 32 runs in the last five overs, and lost Markram and Rassie van der Dussen in that time. David Miller managed his highest score of the series but did not appear entirely confident and faced 14 balls before his only boundary.Van der Dussen batted lower than usual, at No. 5, and was only needed in the 17th over, which did not give him the time he may have liked to settle. Mulder too didn’t look in control with his only boundary coming off a bottom-edge. Overall, South Africa’s scoring rate in the last four overs in the series was 6.95, while West Indies struck at 11.43 runs an over in the same period.Evin Lewis set the chase up for the West Indies•AFP/Getty Images

Lewis leads for West Indies True to form, Evin Lewis cleared the boundary off the third ball of the West Indian reply when he hit left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin over his head. That triggered a sensational beginning for the hosts; Lewis would hit two more sixes and five fours in his right T20I fifty, off judst 30 balls. It was the second slowest fifty of Lewis’ T20I career, after his 34-ball fifty against Pakistan in 2017. All his other fifty-plus scores have come in 26 or fewer balls. That may not sound entirely disappointing but Lewis would not have been happy with when and how he was dismissed. In the 10th over, Lewis mistimed an attempted six of Ngidi over long-on and was caught by Markram well inside the boundary.West Indies’ lost plot South Africa kept West Indies in check in the Powerplay with some sterling efforts in the field, like Lungi Ngidi’s full length dive at short fine to stop a Lendl SImmond’s flick that was destined for four and Temba Bavuma’s dive at mid-wicket to intercept a fierce Lewis pull. But they also put some chances down, some more difficult than others.Tabraiz Shamsi could not hold on to a return catch in his followthrough off Shimron Hetmyer’s leading edge or to the opportunity Hetmyer presented when he swung at a Mulder full toss and sent the ball swirling to short third man. Mulder got his reward off the next two balls though. Markram held on to a simple chance at long-off to dismiss a hamstrung Pollard before took a low, diving catch at point to dismiss Andre Russell for a first-ball duck.Mulder’s third over took West Indies from 103 for 3 to 112 for 5 and left them needing 57 runs off the last five overs to win. West Indies stayed somewhat in the hunt until Bavuma plucked Dwayne Bravo’s slice off Kagiso Rabada out of the sky to all but secure the series for South Africa. Bavuma judged the catch perfectly, as he made a lot of ground from point to deep point, and took it cleanly to complete a good day in the field.

Spurs youngster Sarr ‘ready’ for minutes

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Pape Matar Sarr is ‘ready’ to be used regularly by Antonio Conte this season, according to The Guardian journalist Ed Aarons.

The Lowdown: No minutes for Sarr

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Metz, with Conte unable to promise him regular playing time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Sarr is now back in north London, but he is still waiting to make his first appearance in 2022/23, not featuring at all for the first team despite making several matchday squads.

With Spurs’ midfield sometimes cited as an area of concern, though, could it be that the young Senegalese is given a chance to shine soon?

The Latest: Aarons makes new claim

That’s certainly something that Aarons wants to see, as he told GiveMeSport that he believes Sarr can make an impact in N17 in the coming weeks and months.

The reporter said of the 20-year-old:

“He’s a very exciting player in terms of the progression he’s made at such a young age.

“It’s a shame that Tottenham haven’t given him a chance because he’s probably ready, I think. He’s been on the bench a few times this season, but he is a holding midfielder, which they have plenty of.

“He dictates the play and that is the sort of role for someone who is a bit older, normally.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Is he ready?

There would be an element of risk in taking a punt on Sarr, given his lack of experience at this level. However, sometimes such gambles can pay off in the long run, and he has been hailed as a ‘really good prospect’ by Conte himself.

Giving the midfielder an opportunity would also allow the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur a breather, with the duo having started 23 games between them in the Premier League already this season.

It would be unadvisable for Sarr to be overused in Spurs’ upcoming fixtures, but handing him a first-team debut from the substitutes’ bench and gradually giving him more minutes would appear to be shrewd management by Conte.

Man Utd dealt Benjamin Sesko transfer blow

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their attempts to sign rising star Benjamin Sesko, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that the Slovenian will join RB Leipzig.

The Lowdown: Sesko on fire at Salzburg

The 19-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young attacking players, even being compared to Erling Haaland by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Sesko has already scored 17 goals in 62 appearances for Red Bull Salzburg despite still being a teenager, while he also has four goals in 15 caps for Slovenia.

The £40m-valued striker has been linked with a move to United recently, but it looks as though the Premier League giants are set to miss out on him.

The Latest: Man United dealt Sesko transfer blow

Writing for Substack [via Caught Offside], Romano stated his belief that Sesko would be joining another Red Bull-owned club in RB Leipzig, treading a familiar transfer path for Salzburg players.

The Italian outlined:

“Another player being linked with United is Benjamin Sesko, but I’m less sure of the truth to these rumours.

“Sesko signed for RB Leipzig last summer and it will be completed in 2023, so I’m told he’s going to Leipzig. Man Utd have been tracking him for a long time, this is not new – last summer Man Utd and Chelsea were interested, but he’s going to Leipzig.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-9/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One for the future?

Missing out on Sesko would be a blow for United, who need to look at bringing in a high-quality centre forward to replace the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial eventually, with doubts emerging in recent weeks surrounding the Old Trafford futures of those two players.

A couple of years at Leipzig could see the Slovenian become an even more rounded and formidable footballer, though, so United could potentially look to snap him up further down the line whenever he has outgrown the Bundesliga club.

To be likened to the hugely prolific Haaland is enormously high praise, and Sesko does look like a special talent who could be a monster transfer target for the Red Devils in years to come, possessing pace, power and ruthlessness in front of goal.
