Charlotte FC officially unveiled their "Fortress" away kit, following a teaser involving new signing Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian, settling into his new city, had earlier exchanged jerseys with Charlotte Hornets' Brandon Miller, sparking speculation about the new design. Despite fan curiosity, the club remained tight-lipped until this official launch, putting an end to the rumors and showcasing their bold new look for the upcoming season.

The new design, created by Adidas, is a V-neck jersey with black, white and blue accents across the shirt. It has a predominantly dark base, combined with silver for all logos and the three Stripes on the shoulders. Lighter blue accents add a little bit of definition with a picture of a fortress on the back of the neck and a shield on the bottom right on the front. The club’s main sponsor, Ally, features prominently on the front while their secondary sponsor, Rugs.com, features on the right hand sleeve.

GOAL's Culture & Clobber Axis: New boots for Lionel Messi, Neymar, Arne Slot's head-loss and more

GOAL gets the measure of the latest from the football zeitgeist, including boot drops for a host of stars and the Liverpool boss losing it

Welcome to the Culture & Clobber Axis, where GOAL runs the rule over all the latest from the intersection of football and culture – from the sublime to the ridiculous, to what hits and what misses completely.

We're all about new boots this week, with new clobber for the likes of Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Neymar, while a bad week for Liverpool has thrown up no shortage of delicious narrative.

But where do the week's biggest talking points from the football zeitgeist place in our comprehensive axis? Let's get into it…

adidasNew signature boots for Leo

Lionel Messi has become synonymous with adidas' iconic F50 speed boot, and he has been blessed with a new signature pair despite the fact he's closing in on his 40s – a reflection of his enduring influence on that game, which will last long beyond his retirement.

What's more, Leo has chosen 10 young ballers from the men's and women's game to wear the silver, blue and electric yellow Messi F50 Player Pack 1, including Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, the USWNT's Jaedyn Shaw and future Man City starlet Cavan Sullivan.

adidasWomen's stars dominate new ads

Super Bowl week brought with it a load of big-budget ads, with women's football taking centre stage. Nike's 'So Win' campaign went live during the NFL's showcase, featuring Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas alongside a number of the American sportswear giant's other female athletes.

adidas' latest work emerged during the week, as Putellas' club-mate Aitana Bonmati and USWNT icon Trinity Rodman starring in a series of films under the title 'You Got This' as a response to 'negative pressure'. All of this just goes to show the exponential growth of the women's game across the globe.

Getty Images SportMan City's misguided banner

Oh dear, Man City. The week after being on the receiving end of a barrage of sh*thousery from Arsenal fans, the Cityzens fans really shot themselves in the foot as they decided to mock Real Madrid, Vinicius Junior and Florentino Perez ahead of the two sides' Champions League clash.

Before kick-off, a banner was unfurled with the Oasis lyrics 'Stop crying your heart out' and an image of Rodri kissing the Ballon d'Or trophy, which he famously pipped Vini Jr to last year amid Los Blancos' incendiary decision to boycott the ceremony. However, Real Madrid would go on to snatch a last-minute winner, with Vinicius named man of the match. Ouch.

England have no choice but to cling to the positives

Tourists will use Pope-Buttler partnership as evidence their batting line-up can succeed in Australia

Matt Roller08-Dec-2021England have no choice but to cling to the positives. A chastening opening day of the Ashes series at the Gabba saw them bowled out for 147 in 50.1 overs, which represented a recovery of sorts from 11 for 3, 29 for 4 and 60 for 5, but they will use Ollie Pope’s partnership with Jos Buttler as evidence that their batting line-up can be successful in Australia, so long as their top order can make it through the new ball.Pope and Buttler combined for a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket, which represented the only hour of the first day during which England controlled the pace of the game. Pope was typically busy, making it hard for Australia’s seamers to set him up by scampering through for sharp singles, while Buttler’s innings encapsulated the “fearless” approach he had pledged to take in this series, lofting over the infield and capitalising on width.Neither batter kicked on, Buttler top-scoring with 39, but if England are to retain any hope of winning – or even drawing – this series then they must see the partnership as proof that there will be opportunities for big runs against the old ball and put their top order’s struggles down to poor preparation and opening-day nerves.Related

Pat Cummins delighted that bowlers followed Ashes 'blueprint'

Rory Burns’ tally of ducks in 2021 – six, the record for an opening batter in a calendar year – reflects the fact he is vulnerable early in his innings but he would surely expect to clip Mitchell Starc’s leg-stump half-volley away for four more often than not, but for the pressure of the first session of an Ashes series. Dawid Malan’s success in the 2017-18 series indicates that he should adapt to the extra bounce on Australian pitches once he has had the chance to bat on them, while Joe Root and Ben Stokes are their two best batters and will not fail consistently throughout the series.India’s top order demonstrated in 2020-21 that batting for long periods to set the game up for an attacking middle order is a method that works for touring teams in Australia, not least against a side that relies heavily on three frontline quicks. England lost their fifth wicket after 26.4 overs on Wednesday; at the same stage last winter, India lost more than two wickets only twice in eight innings, one of them in their freak 36 all out at Adelaide.”If we had managed to get through that first two hours one down, for example, I think we could have made the most of it with a softer ball and a slower pitch,” Pope said. “We’ve just got to execute better, particularly in the first two hours of the game.”Personally I like to come out with a lot of intent. I always want to move the scoreboard along, especially if the ball is in my area, and a situation like that lends itself to that as well. You need to get your runs on the board. The ball got a little bit softer – the seam wasn’t quite as pronounced, so maybe the ball didn’t nip around as much.”Jos came in and took the pressure off. Obviously it’s frustrating that neither of us could go on and push for a bigger score. It would have been nice for us to both extend our innings and make 70s, 80s or 100s, but we weren’t able to today. At the time, he took the pressure off nicely, took the pressure off me and suddenly the scoreboard was ticking along pretty well. He’s ridiculously talented and reads the situation of the game and if he feels that he puts his best foot forward by doing that, that’s what he’ll do.”Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope counter-attacked after lunch•AFP/Getty ImagesThere is too much on the line for England in this series for them to rip up their blueprint after a single innings, however poorly they batted: Root has accepted that it will “define my captaincy” while Chris Silverwood highlighted winning back the urn as his top priority when he was appointed two years ago. There is no doubt that their confidence will have been hit, but Pope insisted that a tough start would not be a “massive dent”. Instead, he stressed that the crucial question was how they will react to a disappointing day, and whether their seamers can make early inroads on a helpful pitch.”We’re going to keep fighting,” Pope said. “We’ve got to see both sides bat on this wicket. We don’t know how it’s going to react tomorrow but we’re going to come back stronger and hopefully get a good score on the board second dig after knocking them over.”Our preparation from the mental side has gone well. We’ve spoken about everything, obviously we haven’t performed as well as we would have wanted today but both teams have got to bat on it. We’re not going to get too down about today now and we’ll come back hard tomorrow.”

Ipswich loanee who was unreal in McKenna’s 1st season is now in Non-League

The Premier League season is nine games old now, and while Ipswich Town are still without their first win, they have every chance of staying up.

Despite already facing Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion, the Tractor Boys remain above the relegation zone on four points, and while there have been a few suspect performances at the back, they’ve looked reasonably threatening in attack.

However, survival is an extraordinarily tough objective for the Suffolk side as, even though they signed several talented players over the summer, Kieran McKenna still has a number of players in his squad who were there when he took charge of the club in League One.

However, they are without one of the team’s top goal-scorers in the league that season, as his career has taken on a very different trajectory from that of Ipswich over the last couple of years.

Ipswich's rapid rise

This season is Ipswich’s first back in the Premier League for 22 years, and just a few years ago it looked like they wouldn’t be back in the top-flight for some time.

However, following the sacking of Paul Cook in December 2021, the club appointed the inexperienced McKenna as his replacement in what was the Northern Irishman’s first managerial role, and to say it was a masterstroke would be an understatement.

He would stabilise the club in that first campaign, leading them to an 11th-placed finish before mounting a promotion charge the following campaign that saw the Tractor Boys finish second with a mammoth points total of 98 and a frankly ridiculous goal difference of plus 66, which was unsurprisingly the best in the league.

Now, the team would have been forgiven for just looking to establish themselves in the Championship the following season and build from there, but they didn’t do that. Instead, as he had the previous year, McKenna led his side on an incredible promotion charge that once again saw them finish in second place and secure Ipswich’s place in the Premier League for the first time in many fans’ lives.

Amazingly, there are still many players from League One in the current squad, such as, Sam Morsy, Wes Burns and Conor Chaplin, but someone who is no longer in the team is Macauley Bonne.

Macauley Bonne's post Ipswich career

It might be a name some Ipswich fans have forgotten in the blur that’s been the last few years, but during McKenna’s first season at Portman Road, Bonne ended the campaign as the club’s joint top goalscorer in League One alongside Burns, with 12 a piece.

However, the Ipswich-born poacher was only at the club on a season-long loan from Queens Park Rangers, so he returned to West London in the summer.

His contract was terminated by mutual consent the following January as he struggled to make an impact at Loftus Road, and the subsequent years would see the Zimbabwean international play for Charlton Athletic, Gillingham and Cambridge United as he struggled to find form.

Things got worse for the 29-year-old in July of this year as he was released by The Gills, and for a few months, he was a free agent until he dropped down another division to join non-league side Southend United on a one-year deal.

Unfortunately, the former Ipswich ace has seriously struggled for form at the former Football League giants so far this season and, as things stand, has just two assists to his name in ten appearances, which isn’t the sort of form that will see him retained next year.

Ultimately, while he was great for Ipswich and McKenna in the Northern Irishman’s first season at Portman Road, the last few years haven’t been kind to Bonne, and if his form doesn’t improve, he might not make it back to the Football League.

Chelsea big admirers of 22 y/o "complete player" who’s amazing at dribbling

Chelsea are now big admirers of a “complete player”, having watched him closely this season, according to a report.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have become known for their activity in the transfer market since the arrival of Todd Boehly, however, there are now signs those days could be coming to an end. Journalist Guillem Balague reports that Enzo Maresca wants two players for every position, and with that now in place, the head coach does not envisage signing more than two or three players in each transfer window.

Balague also states that Maresca is allowed to sign any player he wants, as long as they are under the age of 24 and willing to commit to the long-term project at Stamford Bridge.

As such, we continue to see reports linking Chelsea with a number of young players, including Sporting CP starlet Geovany Quenda, who has a whole host of admirers in the Premier League.

The Blues have also made an approach to sign fellow Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande, indicating that Maresca is still keen to bolster his defensive options, and a new report has now detailed another option in mind.

According to The Boot Room, the west London club are big admirers of Gent left-back Archie Brown and have continued to watch him this season, with the Englishman also capable of playing at centre-back and left midfield.

Interest in Brown is said to be growing, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Brentford and Fulham all watching him closely this season. As such, there could be a huge battle for the 22-year-old’s signature, but current employers Gent could be in a strong negotiating position, given that his contract is not set to expire until the summer of 2027.

Chelsea now battling Real Madrid to sign "excellent" Fernandez replacement

He’s impressed in Italy.

ByTom Cunningham Nov 10, 2024 Chelsea's left-back options

Marc Cucurella remains Maresca’s first-choice option at left-back, starting the majority of games there this season, however, Maresca has also deployed captain Reece James in that area on occasion.

Ben Chilwell is also available but could leave Chelsea in January. The Blues appear to have a plethora of options, although both Chilwell and James have had their fair share of injuries over the past few years. As such, it may be wise for Maresca to bring in an additional reinforcement at left-back, and Brown could fit the bill, given that he is at the right age to be a part of the long-term Chelsea project, and he has impressed considerably with Gent.

Archie Brown

Maresca is known for his attacking style of play, so it is important that his full-backs are capable of being a threat higher up the pitch, and the Gent star clearly is, given that he ranks in the 99th percentile for progressive dribbling carries per 90 over the past year.

Not only that, but the Englishman’s all-round game is clearly impressive too, given that Gent’s former head of recruitment, Samuel Cardenas, described him as a “complete player” and a “solid defender”. With that in mind, Brown could be a shrewd signing for Chelsea this January.

Mitchell Marsh returns in style as Scorchers tune up for playoffs

Scorchers overhauled Heat’s 155 with eight balls to spare highlighted by Marsh’s brutal 59 off 34 balls

Tristan Lavalette17-Jan-2022Mitchell Marsh made a spectacular return to the BBL as minor premiers Perth Scorchers tuned up for the playoffs with a six-wicket victory over Brisbane Heat.In their regular season finale, a reloaded Scorchers overhauled Heat’s 7 for 155 with eight balls to spare highlighted by Marsh’s brutal 59 off 34 balls. The match played at almost empty Marvel Stadium lost its edge before a ball was bowled when Sydney Sixers’ earlier defeat to Adelaide Strikers locked up top spot for Scorchers and a place in the Qualifier on Saturday between the top two teams on the ladder.Seventh-placed Heat, whose campaign had been derailed by Covid-19, were out of playoff contention and their season ends against Sixers on Wednesday.Marsh returns with a bangMarsh lit up the BBL before being called up for Australia’s Ashes squad and he has clearly not lost his form after destroying the Heat. After the early wickets of Josh Inglis and Kurtis Patterson, Marsh returned to his favoured ground where he twice bludgeoned Melbourne Renegades last month. He started slowly by knocking the ball around before launching a slog sweep for six off left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann in the 11th over. Marsh then put the foot down in a remarkable power surge with 35 runs from 12 balls as he muscled the ball to all corners to pulverise a deflated Heat. He fell shortly after but the damage had been done in an ominous warning ahead of the playoffs. He combined well with Colin Munro, who returned after recovering from Covid-19.Inglis, who like Marsh had been part of Australia’s Ashes squad, missed out on invaluable time in the middle making just 18 in his first BBL match since December 28. He has scored just 45 from six innings this season after being locked in a running battle with Alex Carey for Australia’s vacant wicket-keeping position ahead of the Ashes.Swepson shines for Heat Heat’s bowling has looked formidable after the recent inclusions of Michael Neser and Mitchell Swepson, who were both part of Australia’s Ashes squad. They have missed most of the BBL but showed their prowess with three wickets between them but there wasn’t much Heat could do when a red-hot Marsh started teeing off.In an encouragement for Australian cricket, legspinner Swepson bowled well and tied down Scorchers mid-innings in a notable improvement from his ragged performance against Melbourne Stars a day earlier. He picked up the wickets of Patterson and Marsh to stand out for Heat, who would have wished he was available for much more of the season.Peter Hatzoglou picked up two wickets and conceded just 17 runs in his four overs•Getty ImagesHatzoglou and Agar restrict HeatWith the match essentially a dead rubber, Scorchers appeared to go through the motions with a flat effort early before clawing back control in trademark fashion after the powerplay. In his return, Marsh made an immediate impact with the wicket of Chris Lynn in his first over as Scorchers’ spin duo of Peter Hatzoglou and Ashton Agar took over with a strangulation in the middle overs.Legspinner Hatzoglou has proven a good recruit having crossed over from Renegades and he bowled miserly while claiming the wickets of Ben Duckett and Nathan McSweeney. He was well supported by Agar, who returned from a shoulder injury, in what has become an important tandem for Scorchers’ attack. It wasn’t all rosy though with seamer Andrew Tye, who has had a stellar season, unusually wayward leaking 37 runs from three overs while speedster Lance Morris was also expensive.Bryant rediscovers big-hitting exploits In his first match since January 1, Max Bryant returned in style in his best knock in a difficult season, where he had made double figures just three times in eight previous innings.Bryant dominated the strike early and regulated Lynn to an onlooker as he smashed 34 of Heat’s 39 runs in the four-over powerplay. But he lacked support with wickets tumbling regularly as Heat lost their momentum. They finally used the power surge in the 16th over and it provided the necessary tonic with Bryant smashing a six off Marsh over midwicket while skipper Jimmy Peirson also swung lustily.Having posted his highest BBL score, Bryant eyed his maiden century but fell short after holing out in the 18th over. A six off the last ball from Peirson, who finished 31 not out off 19 balls, pushed them past 150 but it was another mishmash of a batting effort from Heat who have long frustrated their supporters.

Nike is taking on adidas in the nostalgia wars with its timely Total 90 revival – a football culture phenomenon is back

The American sportswear giant is bringing back the iconic silhouette – but not in the form that many people would expect

A cultural phenomenon has returned with the relaunch of the iconic Total 90 – a silo that became a movement, transcending boots, balls and kits. Nike has thrown it back to a defining period in football culture, rebooting T90 after 12 long years and transporting us straight back to the glory days.

The revival may not take the form many would have expected or hoped for, as Nike re-launch the Total 90 III as a streetwear sneaker rather than the football boot we are all clamouring for – but nevertheless, we can just be glad that T90 is back in our lives.

A timely riposte to the adidas Predator juggernaut that is dominating the football marketing sphere, Total 90 is back and we are here for it.

Getty Images SportNoughties football heritage

Total 90 is synonymous with one of football's great eras: the noughties. In the eyes of those who grew up on an appetite of peak Wayne Rooney, Francesco Totti and Fernando Torres, that is when football peaked – iconic names balling out with T90s on foot, wearing the iconic shirt template and weaving their magic with the T90 Aerow ball.

Its influence ran deep; notable GOATs Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho both wore T90s for a time before moving on to the adidas F50s and Nike Tiempo boots to which they are respectively indelibly linked in our minds.

Arguably the most iconic iteration of the boot arrived in 2004 ahead of the European Championship in the form of the tongue-less Total 90 III, instantly recognisable with the circled '90' on the instep and the panelled design that allowed for infinite colour combinations.

Back in the days when kit templates worked wonders, the accompanying shirts featured a framing stitch and pronounced dashes on the sleeves and collar. For the international federations Nike supplied, the designs marked the noughties era as the nonconforming circled front number made them all standouts between 2004-2006. Think Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2004.

As for the ball, the simple three-ring design of the T90 Aerow 1 was a huge hit – supplying countless with iconic moments in the Premier League, La Liga and even the Champions League.

AdvertisementAFPTranscending boots and balls

This wasn't just about boots, balls and shirts – Total 90 became a football culture movement that transcended the pitch having captured the zeitgeist of the early 2000s. It seems that is what Nike are trying to hark back to with their re-release, which comes in the form of a streetwear trainer rather than a football boot.

The tracksuits were everywhere; the advertising campaigns were unbeaten; the ball was everyone's go-to in the park or on the playground. This was perhaps the first sign of football's huge potential influence on wider culture that has been fully realised in recent years.

For football-crazed millennials, alongside Preds and Pro Evolution Soccer, Total 90 became such a recognisable accompaniment to growing up in the noughties. Pure nostalgia.

GettyWhat happened to Total 90?

It seems strange that such a strong cultural phenomenon could ever die out, but by the early 2010s, differing tastes, priorities and advancing technology saw Nike discontinue the silo.

We haven't seen a new Total 90 boot since 2013, with the Laser IV Nike's last drop before the sportswear giant shifted its focus to their new Hypervenom – itself since discontinued – and continuing to develop the iconic Mercurial.

On the pitch, the Total 90 had been all about power and precision, but there was a perception that elite players' needs were moving more towards speed, agility and touch, and the decision was made to render the T90 redundant.

Getty Images SportLong tease

Twelve long years later and Nike have seen fit to bring back the noughties icon, and it feels as though it's been a long time coming.

The marketing campaign has been interesting, with no standalone, polished advert packed full of their biggest stars to announce the return of Total 90 after such a long absence. Instead, the comeback has been drip-fed over a number of months.

Nike first teased the drop last summer, although that was hidden away on their SNKRS app. Netherlands legend Edgar Davids was then spotted wearing a pair in a five-a-side tournament hosted by rapper Travis Scott in November, before Nike revealed more incoming colourways a month later.

The American sportswear behemoth has also recently re-released Portugal's 2004 T90 home shirt having handed the duty of being the nation's kit supplier over to PUMA, as well as the iconic Aerow ball to mark the end of their 25-year partnership with the Premier League – all pointing to a wider comeback in the near future.

Trevoh Chalobah, Raheem Sterling, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Romelu Lukaku and Armando Broja were among the players who were sold or loaned out at the very last minute of the most recent transfer window in August, joining Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, Tino Anjorin, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Djordje Petrovic, David Datro Fofana, Alfie Gilchrist, Basir Humphreys and Gabriel Slonina out of the Stamford Bridge exit door.

It was quite a mass clearout before deadline day on August 30, and it is believed there are a few more Chelsea players set for the chop once we reach 2025.

Carney Chukwuemeka

£100,000-per-week outcast Carney Chukwuemeka is on the transfer list at Chelsea, with Maresca’s side prepared to sell amid rumoured interest from the likes of Barcelona and AC Milan.

Milan are also targeting Cesare Casadei, and the Italian’s exit from Chelsea at the turn of the year has been described as “inevitable” by sections of the media (Milan Live).

There are also some rumours that Crystal Palace have made an approach for Mykhailo Mudryk, with the £89 million Ukranian struggling to work his way into Maresca’s starting eleven on a regular enough basis considering the serious competition ahead of him.

One player who may be desperate to leave above all the aforementioned crop, though, is £200,000-per-week England international Ben Chilwell who has played just 45 minutes in all competitions this season.

Chilwell working to join Juventus from Chelsea via his camp

As per a report by Italian newspaper Tuttojuve this week, Chilwell’s entourage are leading interest in taking him to Juventus on loan, with “movements” taking place behind the scenes between the Old Lady and Chelsea to make this move happen.

The 27-year-old is even willing to take a pay cut, and Chelsea are prepared not to include a loan fee, so this move suits Juve – both in terms of Chilwell’s quality and from a business perspective.

It is also believed that Maresca’s side are ready to pay a chunk of his salary, so Thiago Motta could have a big opportunity here to shore up the left-back position with proven experience and quality.

While Chilwell is no longer a key player at Stamford Bridge, former boss Mauricio Pochettino was a real fan, even calling him “one of the best left-backs in the world” on his day.

“[At his] best, [Chilwell] is one of the best left-backs in the world,” said Pochettino last season.

“There is only one Reece James and Ben Chilwell.”
