Shinwari stuns Quetta in last over, Karachi Kings qualify for Playoffs

In the frenzy of a final over that saw three wickets, three runs, and a dismissal on 99, Usman Shinwari defended four runs to steal victory

The Report by Danyal Rasool10-Mar-2019How the game played outThis was a match Quetta Gladiators appeared to have won so many times you could swear they’d have four points rather than the usual two added to their already burgeoning tally. Instead, in the frenzy of a final over that saw three wickets, three runs, a dismissal on 99 and Usman Shinwari making amends, they would end up with none, a raucous Karachi crowd roaring their side over the line, seemingly flying in the face of reason. Ahmed Shehzad was dismissed one short, and until then seemed destined to be the hero of the day. On a day when Shane Watson fell short, Shehzad guided Quetta to within an inch of the finish line, but where he stumbled, the whole house of cards came crashing down.Karachi had been put in to bat in front of their own fans for the first time in PSL history, and Babar Azam and Colin Munro set up an excellent platform from which Imad Wasim’s side could dominate the game. Babar Azam reached his 99th T20 score above 30, and soon after crossed 50, already the young leader of the batting attack. Ingram was good for a few fireworks in the middle overs, launching Mohammad Nawaz for consecutive sixes to spoil otherwise respectable figures, and the fireworks of Iftikhar Ahmed at the end allowed Karachi to end up with 190, a total that even expert chasers like Quetta would be stretched to overhaul. The chase had seesawed on a number of occasions, with excellent spells from both left-armers Imad Wasim and Umer Khan edging the asking rate up. But with Shehzad, buoyed by a missed stumping chance by an ordinary Ben Dunk, at the crease and in fine fettle, Quetta always gave off the sense they were in command. Umer’s wickets were the only thing reigning them back in, and when Shinwari leaked 22 in his third over, it looked as if Karachi would have to try again to qualify. Then a mad final over followed where Shehzad was brilliantly caught by Colin Ingram at mid-off, and two further wickets fell. The man who had conceded 22 an over ago had somehow defended four to win the game.Ahmed Shehzad steers one towards third man•Pakistan Super LeagueTurning point Quetta looked like they had stalled Karachi’s momentum once they lost their fifth wicket in the 19th over. Karachi had by then accumulated 156, which, on this wicket, meant they would probably end up well below par. But a splendid 18-ball 44 from Iftikhar Ahmed saw the home side plunder 34 runs from their last 11 balls, and a couple of hours later, they needed every single one of them.Star of the dayThe final accolades may belong to Shinwari, but if ever a player deserved an uninterrupted moment in the spotlight the losing side of a contest, it was bashful 19-year old Umer Khan. The uncapped left-arm spinner has, alongside Fawad Ahmed, arguably been the best slow bowler in the entire competition. He was responsible for all of the first four Quetta wickets, three of them credited to his account, the fourth a runout thanks to a flawless throw from him at the boundary. He beat Watson in the flight to get him cheaply, had Rossouw stumped after he saw the batsman charging, and dragged Umar Akmal wide outside off stump to have him hole out. Every miniscule contribution would count in the end.The big missQuetta have historically been hampered by the absence of international stars in their midst once the tournament moves to Pakistan. Last year, after they were knocked out in the playoffs, coach Moin Khan bitterly lamented Shane Watson’s decision not to come to Pakistan. So when, for the first time, the Australian announced he would accompany Quetta back to Karachi, it appeared he may be the difference maker. He got off to a brisk start today, and the signs looked ominous for Karachi. But then, that man Umer struck for the first time of many this evening, coaxing Watson into a loft over cow corner. Watson was reaching for it, and even on these short boundaries, failed to get the elevation required to clear Mohammad Rizwan at the boundary. He had whet the appetite of the Karachi crowd with 19 off 15, but would not be serving the main course for a change.Where the teams standKarachi’s win means the race to the playoffs is over, with Karachi sealing the last qualification spot. Newcastle could ease injury woes by signing "dominant" Lascelles upgrade

Newcastle United have been on a slippy run of form in December. An emphatic 1-0 win over rivals Manchester United in the Premier League almost three weeks ago was followed up by a disastrous spell of four losses in five matches in all competitions, including exits from both the Champions League and the EFL Cup.

While bowing out at the first time of asking will have hurt the Magpies, the defeat on penalties to Chelsea on Tuesday night was arguably a bigger blow for the club, considering Newcastle had a really good chance of winning the competition outright as a result of Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United all being eliminated.

Perhaps the most worrying aspect of Newcastle’s performances recently for head coach Eddie Howe will be the constant individual errors at the back which are costing the side points and trophies.

Nevertheless, the manager has turned his attention towards the January transfer window as he hopes to bring reinforcements into the squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Newcastle United transfer news – Radu Dragusin

According to a report from TuttoMercatoWeb, via Sport Witness, Newcastle United are still interested in signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin in January with the defender an 'important name' ahead of the window. The Magpies were previously linked with a move for the centre-half back in September.

The outlet are also claiming that Serie A giants AC Milan are keeping tabs on the Romanian ahead of the winter window.

Furthermore, the report claims that newly-promoted Genoa will be unable to resist an appropriate transfer fee for the player. The Telegraph revealed on Tuesday that the Romania international’s price tag is £26m, having signed for Genoa for merely £4.8m back in January.

Speaking in a recent interview with Turkish outlet Fanatik, Dragusin’s agent confirmed that Newcastle were one of three English clubs he spoke to about potentially acquiring the services of his client.

His agent said: “I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams. We are getting closer and closer. I spoke to Newcastle, to Arsenal, to Tottenham. I also have messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask.”

On the contrary, reports have also emerged that Dragusin could sign a new long-term contract with Genoa which could lift his price tag even further.

Dragusin is perfect after Newcastle injury update

While the team’s recent results reflect badly on Howe, the manager has struggled to gain any consistency in his side due to the number of absences in the first-team squad.

Even on Saturday, as Newcastle cruised to victory over Fulham at St. James’ Park to pick up their only win in five games, both Fabian Schar and Joelinton had to be replaced in the first half. The Geordie outfit currently have 13 players unavailable, a tally which includes 12 injuries and one suspension.

One area that has been ravaged the most with injuries is the backline. Dan Burn recently just recovered from a six-week spell on the sidelines with a back problem, while Sven Botman’s 45-minute cameo was his first start since September. Furthermore, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth are doubts ahead of Saturday’s away at Luton Town.

Newcastle need defensive reinforcements in January to avoid a further slide in results and performances. However, any potential signings will need to have reliable injury records as well to avoid more of the same from happening.

Thankfully, Newcastle seem to have the all-clear on this front regarding Dragusin. The 21-year-old has missed a total of 28 days in his professional career so far and hasn’t been unavailable since November 2020 when he was suffering from muscle fatigue, according to Transfermarkt.

Radu Dragusin’s stats this season

Despite primarily playing as a centre-half in a back three under World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino at Genoa, the ex-Juventus star has still managed to score twice in all competitions for the club. Only three players have found the net more times for Il Grifone.

Nevertheless, Newcastle need Dragusin to be a superb defender, rather than a goalscorer. When compared to all other centre-backs from Europe’s top-five leagues this season, he ranks really well in a number of key metrics.

Dragusin made just four appearances for Juventus during his time with the Italian giants before eventually leaving permanently for Genoa. Football scout Jacek Kulig even described the former Juve youngster as being a “complete and dominant” central defender.

Now, the Bianconeri could be forced to pay dearly for not trusting Dragusin in the first-team if the player eventually leaves for big money.

The centre-half has also become an integral part of Gilardino’s side, having started all 16 games in Italy’s top flight in the 2023/24 campaign, proving his reliability for his club.

As Newcastle recently spent £35m to bring Botman to the English northeast, it’s unlikely that Dragusin will take his spot in the team in the long term. However, the right-footer could potentially come for club captain Jamaal Lascelles’ place.

How Dragusin compares to Lascelles

The skipper is now on the wrong side of 30 and has seen less and less action in recent seasons. Lascelles has started 13 of the Magpies’ 26 games this season in all competition but made merely one appearance before Botman picked up a nasty knee injury which kept him out of the side for three months.

In addition, Dragusin has been holding his own against Lascelles this term statistically.

Indeed, as can be seen, Newcastle's current target is more adept in the air, is a better reader of the play and appears to be more front-footed, with his level of key passes a great deal higher. As a result, this could be a really astute acquisition by the Toon for relatively cheap and would certainly help Howe ease the injury woes in his side.

West Ham handed boost as they open January transfer talks to sign Bergwijn

West Ham United have quietly enjoyed an excellent season so far, sitting as high as sixth in the Premier League and through to the knockout stage of the Europa League. After they lost Declan Rice in the summer transfer window, it was easy to worry for the Hammers, but they've bounced back in style both on and off the pitch ever since. Now, they're no longer a side fearing relegation, instead, they are one of the sides breaking up the classic top six in the Premier League.

As David Moyes looks to take the London club to the next level, he could find further improvements in the January transfer window, with talks reportedly underway to grant one player a return to England.

West Ham transfer news

Whilst West Ham enjoyed a productive summer transfer window, losing Mohammed Kudus to the Africa Cup of Nations this month will undoubtedly leave them scrambling for options. The winger's absence has seemingly left them with no choice but to turn to the transfer market to find a quick solution, which could come in the form of a former Spurs player looking for Premier League redemption.

Steven Bergwijn for Ajax

According to Football Insider, West Ham have opened talks to sign Steven Bergwijn, who is "very keen" on a return to the Premier League and open to a move to the London Stadium this month. The Hammers are reportedly discussing a permanent and loan move with Ajax as they look to land an attacking reinforcement for Moyes.

Whilst talks are at an early stage, it could be an interesting couple of weeks for the Dutchman and West Ham as they look to get a potential deal over the line. Given that Bergwijn is a former Spurs player, it would certainly be a deal to keep an eye on.

"Unique" Bergwijn could replicate Kudus' output

Bergwijn's Spurs record isn't the greatest, with just eight goals and 10 assists in 83 appearances, but since returning to Ajax he has been far closer to his best. And at that level, the Dutchman can replace the output of Kudus while he is away on international duty with Ghana, as Bergwijn's stats prove.

During his time at Spurs, although things didn't work out, former manager Nuno Espirito Santo was full of praise for Bergwijn, saying via Football London:

“Stevie started the season very very well. Very, very well. Unfortunately he got injured in the national team, he got injured in national team, and since then he’s struggled again. But now he’s getting back, like I said to you before, it’s about getting him fitter, stronger, faster because he’s a very talented player. Very talented player. Unique inside our squad. He has things that really can really help us. He’s fantastic in 1v1, offensive, he’s fast, he gives us speed. He gives us… We need Stevie. I repeat myself: we need Stevie."

With that said, West Ham could hand Bergwijn the chance to prove Nuno right if West Ham hand him a second chance in the Premier League this month.

Rangers make contact to sign left-back target who "must go on loan"

Rangers are believed to have made contact with an "excellent" player over a move to Ibrox in the January transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Rangers' left-back search

It looks as though the Gers will look to sign a new left-back this month, with a number of different players linked with coming in and filling the potential void left by Ridvan Yilmaz, should he leave the club.

Hellas Verona defender Josh Doig is one individual who has emerged as an option for Philippe Clement, as he possibly looks to return to the Scottish Premiership, while Liverpool youngster Owen Beck is also seen as an option to come in and provide more quality down the left flank.

Over the weekend, Bristol City's Cameron Pring is another name who has been thrown into the hat, providing competition for the players mentioned above, while Benfica's David Jurasek has also been backed to possibly trade the Portuguese giants for Rangers.

Much may depend on what happens regarding Yilmaz, of course – various links have suggested that he could depart this month – but a significant update has now emerged regarding one of the left-back targets.

Rangers make contact over David Jurasek

According to A Bola [via Ibrox News], Rangers have now been in contact with Benfica over left-back Jurasek and a move to the club this month.

The 23-year-old looks set to be available, assuming Manchester United youngster Alvaro Fernandez heads to Benfica, and he "must now go on loan", according to the report. Ligue 1 pair Marseille and Lens have both also been seen as possible suitors for Jurasek, with the former also thought to be interested in rivalling Rangers for the signing of Doig.

The Benfica man appears to stand out as a good option for the Gers in January, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig heaping praise on his overall game, saying:

"Attacking full-back, fast, powerful & athletic, inexhaustible energy, vertical player who’s always looking to push forward at every opportunity. Superb crossing skills, tenacious & committed in duels, high work rate, determination & winning mentality 22 years of age. Excellent left-back we will see in a top league rather sooner than later."

Jurasek is still only 23 years of age, so Rangers would be snapping up someone who could improve a lot in the coming years, and the fact that he is a five-time capped Czech Republic international shows that he has been deemed good enough to get a chance on the biggest stage.

Leeds, who ended up in the play-offs after losing four of their final six Championship games, began the brighter but fell behind in the 24th minute when Armstrong coolly slotted past Illan Meslier after Southampton capitalised on some woeful defending at the back. Leeds' French goalkeeper made a vital stop to deny Armstrong again as Saints deservedly went into the break one goal to the good. Daniel Farke's men were on the front foot after the interval but could not fashion any noteworthy chances against a well-organised Southampton side. Substitute Dan James rattled a strike against the bar late on and brought a good save out of Alex McCarthy but for all Leeds' huff and puff, they lacked quality in the Saints box and in the end Russell Martin's players earned their triumph at Wembley.

While West Ham loanee Flynn Downes ran the show in midfield, goals win matches and Adam Armstrong's well-taken strike – his 24th of the season – secured Southampton the victory. The forward was sharp in attack and Leeds always looked shaky when the 27-year-old was on the ball in the final third.

GettyTHE BIG LOSER

While he has had an excellent season for Leeds, Ethan Ampadu inexplicably stepped out of defence to try and close down Will Smallbone, leaving Armstrong unmarked, and the diminutive striker slotted home with aplomb. That defensive mistake ultimately settled the contest. Leeds, who briefly topped the Championship table before finishing behind Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the automatic promotion spots, have now lost all six play-off campaigns they have been in.

Ben Duckett, Steven Mullaney fire as Notts rack up another 400-plus total

Nottinghamshire move a step closer to qualifying for the knockout stages of the Royal London Cup with a brutal batting display

ECB Reporters Network26-Apr-2019Nottinghamshire moved a step closer to qualifying for the knockout stages of the Royal London Cup with a brutal batting display against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge. For the sixth time in three years Notts went past 400 in one-day cricket, before closing on 433 for 7. Ben Duckett and Steven Mullaney led the assault upon the Foxes attack but the four other member of the Outlaws top order also hit punishing half-centuries. Duckett scored 86 from only 61 balls and Mullaney went even faster, bludgeoning 81 from 41 balls. The run chase was interrupted by rain, resulting in a revised target of 347 from 37 overs but the soaring run rate counted against the visitors, as wickets began to tumble at regular intervals. Luke Fletcher claimed figures of 3 for 53 as the Foxes were bowled out for 259 in 33.2 overs, leaving the home side as victors by 87 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.Earlier, Notts’ initial plans were thrown into disarray just before the toss when the in-form Ben Slater was withdrawn after picking up a slight niggle in the warm-up. His deputy at the top of the order, Chris Nash, proved to be an able replacement and an ideal foil for Joe Clarke as the hosts added 82 in the opening 10-over Powerplay.Clarke had been spilled on 26, driving Chris Wright to the finger-tips of Paul Horton at cover but he offered very little else to the fielding side until clipping to short fine leg for 55. Nash, who had helped add 108 for the first wicket, then fell to the spin of Colin Ackermann for 56.Duckett went through his full repertoire of shots, hitting boundaries all around the wicket as he reached his 50 from 41 balls. The left-hander dominated a third-wicket partnership of 106 with Jake Libby, before tamely ramping the ball straight into the hands of wicketkeeper Lewis Hill. Libby had reached his first one-day 50 from 45 balls and advanced his score to 66 before holing out.The impetus was maintained with a thrilling partnership of 91 in only 7.3 overs between Mullaney and Tom Moores. Both eventually lost their wickets to Gavin Griffifths, the most successful Leicestershire bowler with 3 for 92, leaving James Pattinson to club the 14th and final six of the innings. The Outlaws total was their second highest in history, falling just short of the 445 for 8 that they made against Northants in 2016.Mark Cosgrove and Harry Dearden put on 106 for the first wicket in only 13.2 overs as the Foxes tried to lay the foundations for an unlikely victory chase. Pattinson broke their stand, pinning Cosgrove lbw for 59, shortly before Mullaney bowled Ackermann. At 152 for 2 from 21.5 overs, a shower of rain forced the players from the field and left a revised target of almost 13 runs per over. Dearden, who had become the eighth player in the match to pass 50 fell in the quest for quick runs and was immediately followed back to the pavilion by two team-mates.Sharp work by Pattinson ran out Paul Horton for 36 and Arron Lilley was bowled first ball by Patel. Hill scored a defiant 21 from only 10 balls but was one of three wickets to fall in the same Fletcher over. The outcome means that Notts have taken maximum points from their first four matches for the first time since 2013. Leicestershire’s defeat leaves them on two points from five matches and unable to qualify from the group.

West Ham pushing to sign "monster" £52m Darwin Nunez clone

Sunday's draw against Sheffield United in the Premier League was characterised by a dearth of control, but the crux of West Ham United's season remains the need for a gleaming new centre-forward.

Danny Ings started at Bramall Lane and was lively in a deeper-lying role, making four key passes and providing a consistent outlet, but the 31-year-old is yet to score this term and has just three goals from 42 appearances for the Irons.

The other established frontman, Michail Antonio, 34 in three months, has been sidelined for over two months and is ostensibly declining. Edson Alvarez's absence in Sheffield proved decisive in the failure to win, but for the long-term fluency of a remarkable side, signing a striker must be David Moyes' priority.

West Ham's striker search

According to the Sun, West Ham are ready to smash their transfer record to sign Bayer Leverkusen talisman Victor Boniface, who has been in fine fettle for Xabi Alonso's Bundesliga-topping team this season.

Chelsea and Newcastle United are both interested but Moyes will hope that the promise of a leading role could tempt the Nigerian to move to east London this summer, with a winter transfer unlikely but being pushed by Hammers’ technical director Tim Steidten.

January transfer window: All the deadline day deals from England and Scotland

Stay on top of all the latest transfer deals across the Premier League, EFL and SPFL as the January window closes.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 1, 2024 How Victor Boniface compares to Darwin Nunez

Valued at £52m by CIES Football Observatory and contracted to the BayArena until 2028, it's safe to say that Leverkusen are in no haste to cash in.

The 23-year-old has scored 16 goals and supplied eight assists across 23 matches in all competitions this season, earning praise for his "monster" presence in the frontline by Molde assistant coach Trond Strande, signing him from Union Saint-Gilloise for €20m (£17m) plus add ons last summer.

Invariably menacing in the final third, the four-cap Nigeria international ranks among the top 7% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for assists, the top 12% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive carries and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

With a hunger for goals and assists in their hordes, a fleet-footed gait and a tendency to drift in from the left, West Ham could finally land a striker of Darwin Nunez's mould, with the Liverpool star considered the 6 foot 2 Boniface's most comparable player of FBref.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez

In January 2022, six months before the Uruguayan signed for Liverpool in a club-record £85m deal, Moyes fought to land Nunez before the transfer deadline, sadly coming up fruitless after seeing a €45m (£37m) bid rejected.

Nunez has been a polarising figure in the Premier League, and while detractors cherish the wayward finishes and scorn the lapses of focus, the 24-year-old is one of the most dynamic and devastating players around.

Scoring twice against Bournemouth just hours after West Ham's contest against Sheffield United finished 2-2, Nunez has now taken his seasonal tally up to ten goals and ten assists apiece across the board, despite starting just 18 times.

The £140k-per-week phenom also ranks among the top 18% of forwards for goals, the top 5% for assists, the top 14% for shot-creating actions and the top 12% for progressive carries per 90.

Boniface, similarly, might cause frustration among Irons ranks at times, ranking among the top 1% of positional peers for shots taken per 90, but he offers something brilliant, intangible, in the attacking surges.

Goals, assists, disruption, despondency. Boniface unleashes mayhem as Nunez does and pocks the opposition goal with craters after barrage upon barrage of fire, also intelligent and selfless enough to know when to place a pass and provide for his teammates.

Nunez, too, boasts such qualities, more composed and economical in his overall play this season. West Ham might have failed to bring the Anfield talisman to the London Stadium but they could now find the missing piece to complete Moyes' team, with Boniface tailor-made to cause a stir in the Premier League.

Productive year for the United StatesHave Olympic gold medal bid to comeProven winner calling the shots as coachWHAT HAPPENED?

Having briefly slipped into reverse at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the United States are looking to move through the gears once more. The current calendar year has already been a productive one, with W Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup glory savoured, and there is a gold medal bid to come at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Former Chelsea boss Hayes is now calling the shots ahead of a trip to Paris, as she settles into the most demanding of roles, and Rodman is looking forward to working with a proven winner. She has told : “I just had known of her accomplishments and how great she was, and heard through other people, how successful and how good she is also just as a person … So I was really happy. I think the growth of the game and also having more women in this sport, I think is really cool. I’m very open minded and excited about the future and what there is to come with her, because we haven’t even scratched the surface I don’t think, and when she comes in I think it’s going to be pedal to the metal for sure.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodman has helped to get the USWNT back on the trophy trail, with the general consensus being that they have benefited as a collective from seeing a global crown snatched from their heads. Rodman added: “For us younger players in the World Cup that played a lot, like me and Soph [Smith], and [Emily] Fox and Naomi [Girma] … it tested us a lot. As a team you [have] got to figure out what’s going wrong quickly and we didn’t do that in the World Cup. So for me, I don’t look back at it in a bad way any more. I think I did closer to the loss and being sent home. But now I look at it happily, just because it was a great learning experience.”
