Tottenham: Joachim Andersen can be the ace to push Alderweireld out of the club

We know that signing a defender may not be high up on your wishlist, Tottenham fans, but here we are. The Lilywhites currently have four central defenders at the club in the form of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, so signing another one might not be the biggest priority in the eyes of fans.

Despite that, Spurs are one club of five that have been linked with a move for Joachim Andersen of Sassuolo alongside Arsenal, AC Milan, Roma and Lyon, according to Ansa. The Danish defender would come in as the fifth central defender at the club, but the pressure wouldn’t be on the 23-year-old.

The first choice options at the club at the moment are Vertonghen and Alderweireld, yet it may be easier for Andersen to find his way in than you’d think. Alderweireld has been no stranger to media attention recently, especially seeing as his Tottenham deal expires in one year’s time, so he could easily be forced out by the young Serie A man.

We have to iterate that a lot has to happen for this to come to fruition. The Lilywhites have to beat four other sides to his signature and then he has to prove himself to the point that the soon to be departing Alderweireld can be justifiably cast aside, but from what we’ve seen of the £22.5m rated ace, as per Transfermarkt, it’s not impossible.

The 2017/18 season saw Tottenham get on fine without Alderweireld as injuries and contract issues saw him resigned to just 14 Premier League outings. That season Spurs still came 3rd and secured Champions League football, so there’s no reason why they can’t do the same next season if the Belgian is edged out by the impressive Joachim Andersen.

Tottenham fans, would you be happy to sign Andersen? Let us know!

Southampton: Hasenhuttl factor makes confidence in transfer tussle for Adams unsurprising

Southampton’s interest in Birmingham City striker Che Adams is not new.

In January, Sky Sports reported that, alongside Burnley, the south coast club were keen on the 22-year-old.

And according to The Sun, they are closing in on a deal to sign him, confident they have seen off Sean Dyche’s side and Crystal Palace in this apparent three-way transfer tussle.

That last couple of seasons, of course, have not been great ones for Southampton, with the Saints finding themselves in back-to-back relegation battles.

But even so, it is not a surprise to hear that the club are confident of beating the likes of Burnley and Crystal Palace to Adams’ signature. Why? Well it is down to the Ralph Hasenhuttl factor, of course.

While Southampton have not been as stable as Burnley and Crystal Palace across the last two Premier League campaigns, with Hasenhuttl now at the helm, they are arguably playing much better stuff — or at least when compared to the former.

It has become well-documented how uninspiring Burnley’s football can be under Dyche, with The Independent describing the Englishman’s 2014/15 side as the second worst team to watch in the Premier League.

In contrast, Southampton have been trying to put on a show under Hasenhuttl, pressing high and looking to obliterate the opposition on the counter-attack, something which James Ward-Prowse spoke about back in January.

Offering a No.9 the chance to play in a team with such characteristics, you cannot blame Southampton for feeling confident about their chances of adding Adams to their squad.

Southampton fans, has Hasenhuttl made St. Mary’s a more attractive destination again with his football? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Leeds fans write of Pontus Jansson rumours

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have written off the rumours linking Pontus Jansson with a move to Fulham.

Reputable journalist Matt Law reported that the London club are very keen to sign the Swede, but United fans find it hard to believe that a player would want to swap Elland Road for Craven Cottage.

Many were baffled by the links with one fan asking: “Why on earth would he go to a smaller club in the same division?”

These Leeds supporters do seem to have a short memory. The last time Fulham were relegated they signed arguably their best player in Ross McCormack just a few weeks after he won the Championship golden boot, so it isn’t too far fetched that history could repeat itself here.

It remains to be seen whether or not this deal will be done or not, but many members of the fanbase are confident that it will not come to fruition.

Celtic fans think Mikey Johnston could have a big 2019/20 season

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans were left impressed with the performance of winger Mikey Johnston on Tuesday during the Hoops’ final pre-season game before competitive action.

Neil Lennon’s side have been in Austria and Switzerland over the last ten days preparing for the challenge of Bosnian champions Sarajevo next week away from home.

It’s potentially a tricky fixture so it’s been crucial for Lennon to get his first-team up to the required fitness and ensure there are no slip ups.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

One player that looks in line to start that match next Tuesday is Johnston, who was given 90 minutes against Swiss side St Gallen, winning the official website’s man of the match accolade.

He impressed with a number of dribbles and combinations with teammates in the final third, although the Hoops couldn’t find that killer ball or chance to really punish the hosts, with the match ending in a dour 0-0.

Celtic fans were impressed with the 20-year-old though, taking to Twitter during and after the match to share their thoughts on his display and what he could achieve in the season ahead…

Arsenal should’ve listened to Sven Mislintat when signing Denis Suarez

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

When Arsenal signed Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona back in January, it reeked of a club with little funds trying to get a player through the door just for the sake of it.

Incidentally, it was little funds that the Gunners had. Boss Unai Emery revealed that they could only sign players on loan, which is worrying from a financial aspect.

But why did the north Londoners even waste money on paying Suarez wages when they already had players in his position from the academy?

Perhaps if they had listened to Sven Mislintat before bringing Suarez to the Emirates, they would be doing better with players who they actually own instead of temporary solutions.

Check out 5 reasons why Arsenal need Wilfried Zaha in the video below…

The transfer guru, before his sudden departure, was reportedly ‘dismayed’ at the arrival of Suarez when he felt youngsters in the same position such as Bukayo Saka and Joe Willock should have been afforded more opportunities.

He was spot on. Suarez made just four substitute appearances and played a combined 67 minutes in what was a practically useless loan spell – the Spaniard himself admitted that he wasn’t even at 50% fitness.

Mislintat was ultimately proved right about the youngsters as it was Willock who appeared in the Europa League final with Suarez nowhere to be seen – the 5 foot 10 teenager impressed hugely in his brief cameo against Chelsea and some Arsenal fans adored his performance.

The 19-year-old tends to look bright and lively whenever he appears for the Gunners, as does Saka, who made his debut for the club in the Europa League group stage last term and dazzled fans with his direct showings as well.

Arsenal need to trust these players instead of dipping into the market just for the sake of it.

Just take a look at what Liverpool have done with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jurgen Klopp needed a right-back and threw the impressive youngster into the side – he has since become one of the league’s best and is worth a whopping £72m according to Transfermarkt.

Additionally, Crystal Palace also placed their trust in a young Aaron Wan-Bissaka, before moving him on for £50m just roughly 18 months after handing him his debut. 100% profit and a sustainable business method.

Especially during a time in which finances are tight – Emery’s transfer budget is believed to be just £45m – the quality in Arsenal’s academy setup needs to be maximised at every opportunity.

Mislintat appeared to appreciate that and even though he went on to leave the club, his take on the Suarez situation came into fruition anyway. Maybe the failed loan move for the Spaniard won’t be the only thing Arsenal go on to regret from that mid-season saga.

Leeds fans react negatively after Romaine Sawyers transfer update

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror journalist David Anderson on Twitter, reports linking Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers with a move to Leeds United are wide of the mark, and plenty of Whites fans have been quick to react on Twitter.

Football Insider said earlier this month that the Yorkshire outfit were ready to compete with Scottish giants Celtic for the signature of the Bees star, who has since been the subject of a £2.2m offer from West Bromwich Albion.

A separate Football Insider report said on Monday that United were ready to make one last push to win the race for the 27-year-old, who contributed seven assists in 46 appearances for the west London last term having played in both a central and advanced midfield role.

Anderson’s recent tweet suggests Marcelo Bielsa’s men don’t hold an interest in the St Kitts & Nevis international at all though, which makes sense given the options they currently have in that position – Kalvin Phillips, Adam Forshaw, Jamie Shackleton and Mateusz Klich among others.

Leeds supporters have taken to social media to have their say on Anderson’s update, and it’s fair to say they were feeling pretty negative.

Many decided to take aim at the hierarchy and suggested that they are just a selling club, while others didn’t seem surprised at all with some believing they won’t make another signing before the Championship window slams shut on August 8.

Everton fans slam Theo Walcott’s pre-season performance

[ad_pod ]

Everton continued their preparations for the 2019-20 campaign with a goalless draw against Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

Fabian Delph made his debut for the Toffees at the DW Stadium, although he could not help his new club put another pre-season win on the board.

Theo Walcott played the first 45 minutes for Marco Silva’s side, but it would be fair to say that the former England international struggled to make his mark.

And the Everton fans were not too pleased with what they saw from the 30-year-old.

Walcott ended the 2018-19 campaign with a respectable five Premier League goals, although his performances were criticised on a number of occasions.

It remains to be seen whether the attacker will be given a leading role for the Merseyside outfit in the new campaign, but his dwindling form suggests he could come under pressure to hold down a place in the starting XI.

However, the club’s fans were extremely disappointed with what they saw from the 5 ft 9 man against Wigan.

Aston Villa fans delighted with Tom Heaton transfer update

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa’s hunt for a new goalkeeper looks to finally be about to end after the club agreed an £8m deal for Burnley shot-stopper Tom Heaton – which has appeared to please a number of fans in the West Midlands.

Heaton will add much needed Premier League experience to Dean Smith’s goalkeeping department with none of his current options ever featuring in the English top-flight.

The 33-year-old has made 96 appearances in the Premier League, keeping 25 clean sheets, all of which for Burnley whom he joined back in 2013 on a free transfer from Bristol City.

He could become Villa’s 11th signing this summer after the club were promoted from the Championship by defeating Derby County in the play-off final.

Many of the Villa Park faithful took to Twitter to share their delight at the news with one supporter calling the move an absolute masterstroke. Another echoed similar sentiments claiming it was as solid a signing as they could have made listing off Heaton’s experience and leadership qualities.

Other fans said they loved the signing as the Clarets number one was a proven, top-quality goalkeeper with two or three years still at the top of his game.

Newcastle swoop for Emil Krafth doesn’t upgrade on their current options

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…Newcastle target Emil Krafth is set for a medical on Tyneside, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

What’s the story?

The Magpies look primed to wrap up the signing of Krafth before Thursday’s deadline, as Downie claims a fee in the region of £5m has been agreed.

The right-back is set for a medical, and would become the Magpies’ fourth signing of the summer, after Joelinton, Jetro Willems and Allan Saint-Maximin.

Krafth spent last season in Ligue 1 with Amiens, providing one goal and one assist over 35 appearances.

Right-back by committee

As recently as this week, Newcastle fans have been debating their right-back options ahead of the new campaign. Neither of DeAndre Yedlin or Javier Manquillo really cemented themselves in the role last season, so it makes perfect sense to sign a new player to come in and steal the show, right?

Well, looking deeper into Krafth’s season in France, one has to wonder if the £5m man will even be an upgrade on the aforementioned pair.

The 20-cap Sweden international made 1.6 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 0.5 key passes per game last season.

Meanwhile, Yedlin boasted a far superiorÂ1.9 tackles, 1 interception and 1 key passÂdespite playing in a tougher league, while Manquillo managed 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions 0.5 key passes.

Clearly then, Krafth is not a particularly big upgrade on either player, and considering he is merely a couple of months younger than Manquillo and a year younger than Yedlin, it’s not exactly like he’s got massive potential and loads of room to grow.

With this in mind, one has to assume the trio will be left to compete for the role throughout the season, adopting a committee approach to the position. This is a huge risk.

A settled back four (or five) is crucial to instil leadership, organisation and an understanding between the players at the back, and there is no universe in which three average players can make up one good one.

Newcastle’s decision to effectively sign a player at the exact same level as their current options is slightly bizarre. It means they still won’t have a nailed on first-choice at left-back, and it only raises more questions than it answers.

Rangers fans react as Glenn Middleton makes loan switch to Hibs

Rangers youngster Glenn Middleton has finally made his loan move to Hibs after a summer of complications, but the fans aren’t pleased to be helping out their rivals.

The 19-year-old has had a hard time of it since the turn of the new year and will hope to rediscover his form from the start of last season in the capital.

The winger was a regular in Steven Gerrard’s side for the first half of the 2018/19 season, yet saw first-team opportunities limited after the winter break.

Middleton’s summer continued in a similarly frustrating fashion as he saw a loan to Doncaster Rovers fall through, as well the chance of a stint at NAC Breda collapsing too.

Yet, he’s got his chance at Hibs, though some supporters aren’t too excited that he’ll be turning out in the green and white this campaign.

The two clubs have a bit of history, with Hibs selling Rangers target Scott Allan to Celtic in a move that left a bitter taste in the mouths of many.

Here are some of the reactions from the disgruntled supporters on Twitter…
