We were hammered, admits Netherlands skipper

Netherlands captain Roland Lefebvre admitted his side had been "hammered" byPakistan, but defended his side’s participation in the tournament, arguingthat the only way to improve was to play against the best

Charlie Austin21-Sep-2002Netherlands captain Roland Lefebvre admitted his side had been "hammered" byPakistan, but defended his side’s participation in the tournament, arguingthat the only way to improve was to play against the best.Pakistan needed just 16.2 overs to reach the Netherlands 137 run target asImran Nazir scored 59 from 40 balls and Shahid Afridi blitzed 55 from only18, the second fastest one-day fifty."Ya, we got hammered in the end," admitted Lefebvre. "I didn’t expect it toend that quickly. I thought they might play some shots but I hoped we mightbe able to contain them a bit a longer. It was disappointing, but they havegot some very clean hitters of the ball who really got going."However, he tried to look on the bright side, particularly their stubbornbatting which had seem them bat out the full 50 overs, Lefebvre leading theway with an unbeaten 32."I was pleased that we batted the full fifty overs, which was an improvementon our earlier game – we have to look for the positives and that was one,"he said. "Hopefully, next time, we will also score some more runs."He defended his decision to bat first: "The wicket was flat and I justthought we had to be positive and try to get 180 or so on the board. Thebatsmen have to take some responsibility by batting first. As players youcan run but you can’t hide."Although Netherlands lost both their games by massive margins, Lefebvreargued that it was essential for his side to play as much competitivecricket as possible."There is a big gap between the major and minor cricket nations but you don’t solve the problem by not playing each other," he said. "The minor nationshave to compete at this level to improve. There is a lot of hard work to bedone."Pakistan captain Waqar Younis was happy with the performance of the toporder, claiming that the attitude of the players was better than during theSri Lanka game."I thought the body language was a lot better in this game than the lastmonth or so and the boys were more keyed up although the opposition wasdefinitely weaker," he said."I am glad that we have started to play better. This may not be a big winbut it’s a positive with so much serious cricket coming against Australiaand South Africa."Pakistan will now remain in Sri Lanka for the forthcoming Test seriesagainst Australia, which is to be played in Colombo and Sharjah. Pakistanwill be without key players, including Inzamann-ul-Haq and Yousuf Youhanawho need surgery for long-term injuries, and Wasim Akram and Saeed Anwar whoare keen to take a break.Waqar appeared supportive of their decision to rest: "We don’t want to burnout these old heads in the team. We have a lot of serious cricket coming up,especially in South Africa and we want to be fresh."

Windass warns Villa against Pereira

Dean Windass has offered some advice to Aston Villa, regarding their reported interest in West Brom’s Matheus Pereira.

What’s the talk?

Former Premier League midfielder Dean Windass has claimed that Dean Smith will not want West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira at Aston Villa this summer. Villa are reportedly looking at Pereira as a potential signing and Windass does not believe that he has the work rate Smith requires from his players in the Premier League. He told Football Transfer Tavern:

“I can’t see that because he’s not a Dean Smith sort of player, compared to Jack Grealish who always tracks back and Pereira doesn’t do any of that.

“When you play in the Premier League, you can’t carry anybody so I don’t think that will happen.”

Earlier this year, Kevin Campbell said that Pereira had been “disappointing” for West Brom in the Premier League. He told Football Insider:

“I think the football club expected Pereira to have a hell of a season because he took the Championship by storm. They thought they had a match-winner in him because he can score and create goals.

“Let’s be honest though, he has been pretty disappointing. You need your better players to step up, especially at the top end of the pitch and we haven’t seen him do that.”

Smith would hate it

NSWE must avoid making an error by opting against a deal for Pereira this summer. Looking at his statistics from an attacking sense, it is clear to see why clubs would be interested in him. Pereira recorded 11 goals and six assists in a West Brom team struggling at the bottom of the table, which suggests that he has the ability on the ball to perform at Premier League level.

However, there are two sides to the game and Pereira’s defensive numbers are disappointing. As Windass explained, Pereira does not engage in the defensive side of his responsibilities and that is something Smith will not allow his players to avoid next season.

Pereira averaged 0.8 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game, whilst also allowing opponents to dribble past him 1.3 times per game. This highlights the £39k-per-week midfielder’s lack of effort against the ball, as he did not want to work hard to help his team out.

Recent Villa signing Emi Buendia, on the other hand, has the attributes Smith will want from his forwards. In Norwich’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign, Buendia averaged 2.3 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per game for the Canaries, which increased to 2.4 and 1.1 respectively in the Championship season just gone.

Jack Grealish, meanwhile, managed 1.2 tackles per game last season and was only dribbled past an impressive 0.3 times per game.

This shows why Pereira would not fit in at Aston Villa and why NSWE must avoid bringing him to the club this summer. He does not have the defensive awareness to effectively operate in Smith’s side, which is also why the Villa boss would hate having him on the wing. it would open up his fullbacks to increased pressure due to a lack of protection in front of them.

AND in other news, NSWE could land Aston Villa’s next Paul Merson in “extraordinary” £20k-p/w dynamo…

Elliott enjoys new lease of life as Vics crush SA

ADELAIDE, Oct 19 AAP – What a difference a day makes.

Sam Lienert19-Oct-2002ADELAIDE, Oct 19 AAP – What a difference a day makes.A day after relinquishing the Victorian vice-captaincy to focus on his batting, opener Matthew Elliott showed instant results with a man-of-the-match performance to cap an ING Cup thrashing of South Australia at Adelaide Oval today.Elliott top-scored with a dashing 74 from 73 balls as Victoria easily overtook SA’s 192 all out, scoring 2-193 in just 35.2 overs, to gain the maximum five points, including one bonus point, from its opening limited overs match of the season.Elliott said his move to hand over the vice-captaincy to ex-skipper Darren Berry, and effectively the captaincy with captain Shane Warne unavailable for much of the season on international duties, had lifted a burden from his shoulders and seemed to boost the team as well.”I felt a million dollars today, I suppose it’s only natural sometimes that those sort of things happen,” he said.”It’s maybe like a footy team winning after changing coaches.”I just felt in myself fantastic today, I really enjoyed fielding, and Chuck (Berry) did a great job with the boys, keeping them up and squeezing the total down, so all-in-all it was a pretty good day.”It was a stunning turnaround for the Bushrangers, who yesterday suffered an outright Pura Cup loss to SA here, and were looking in serious trouble early in today’s match.SA, sent into bat, piled on 107 runs without a wicket within the first 20 overs, and looked likely to set a target of at least 250, possibly 300.Openers Greg Blewett (67) and David Fitzgerald (54) looked extremely comfortable and were scoring easily until Fitzgerald was run out attempting a suicidal single.Victoria pounced on the opportunity, with left-arm paceman Mathew Inness snapping up three quick wickets, one in each of his fifth, sixth and seventh overs to suddenly put the Redbacks under pressure and spark an unexpected and massive SA collapse. The Redbacks lost 10-84, including the last nine wickets for just 46, with four of the SA bottom seven making ducks, and the other three scoring just 13 runs between them.Inness finished with the best figures of 3-33, while Shane Harwood and Ian Hewett each took two wickets, and Hewett also took a miraculous diving catch at point to dismiss Ryan Harris off Andrew McDonald’s bowling.Victoria then made light of the run-chase, with Elliott and Nick Jewell (44) putting on an opening partnership of 107 in less than 18 overs, Elliott’s regular lofted boundaries a highlight.Ex-Victorian off-spinner John Davison eventually captured the wickets of both openers to finish with 2-36, but Brad Hodge (34 not out from 54 balls) and Ian Harvey (33 not out from 33 balls) ensured the Bushrangers cruised to victory with an unbeaten 59-run stand.New skipper Berry said the character his team had shown to come back from a difficult situation at the end of five tough days of cricket was a good sign.”Last night the dressing room was pretty flat … we got together last night and had a good chat and knew that today was a new competition and we had to bounce back and bounce back we certainly did,” he said.

Suarez asked about Gers

Luis Suarez has confirmed that while he is pleased Steven Gerrard has won the league with Glasgow Rangers he has no intentions of making the move to Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Fantastic Gers campaign

The previous term was a magnificent one for the Gers, as they won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years. Not only that, they didn’t even lose a single league game in the top flight (thefishy.co.uk).

With a Champions League campaign now on the cards, the Gers could become an attractive proposition for transfer targets, but it seems Gerrard’s controversial and undeniably talented former teammate will not be one of them.

The Latest: Suarez responds to question

Suarez was asked about Gerrard and Rangers during an interview for July’s edition of World Soccer magazine. He said (via Ibrox News):

“I think Stevie is doing just fine without me.

“I am pleased but not at all surprised to see him win the league with Rangers.

“Winning is what he does and at some point in the future I am sure he will be at Liverpool again.”

The Verdict: No surprise

It is obviously no surprise that Suarez is not eager to move to Rangers – after all, there hasn’t been particularly solid reports linking him with the 55-time Scottish champions, despite some suggestions Gerrard could make it happen.

Suarez appears to be enjoying himself in La Liga with Atletico Madrid, where he scored 21 goals in 32 league games last term as Los Rojiblancos won the title (Transfermarkt).

There is no doubt that he would be welcomed with open arms at Ibrox – after all, he is one of the best players of the 21st century, and has managed an incredible 424 goals throughout his club career. However, this is a deal that would be nothing but a pipe dream for the Gers, even if they had an interest in the first place.

In other news, Rangers fans are livid at this latest 55 celebrations update.

Rayudu smashes second ton against Andhra

Staff Reporter21-Nov-2002Railways finally managed to gain their first point in this year’s Ranji Trophy after securing the first-innings lead in their drawn elite gropu match against Rajasthan at Jaipur. Rajasthan, who resumed their first innings on 282-6, were eventually dismissed for 311, which gave Railways a 73-run lead. For the Ranji Trophy champions, off-spinner Kulamani Parida, who claimed 4-105, was the most successful bowler.Railways, then, went on to rattle 179-5 in their second innings before declaring. Set a target of 253, Rajasthan, though, settled for a draw, playing out the remaining 28 overs to reach 99-1 before stumps were drawn.Himachal Pradesh too gained one point from their drawn four-dayer against Bengal at Eden Gardens. The visitors, who had secured a 119-run first innings lead on the third day, declared their second innings at 254-8 in an attempt to secure an outright win. Bengal, though, managed to draw the match by making 257-6 in their final essay; captain Rohan Gavaskar ending up with a quick-fire 103 not out.At Secunderabad, 17-year-old Ambati Rayudu pressed his claims for an India cap, following his 210 in the first essay with an unbeaten 159 in Hyderabad’s second innings against Andhra. The 161-ball scorcher contained as many as 17 boundaries and five sixes. With Rayudu in such blazing form, the Hyderabadis managed to set Andhra a daunting fourth-innings victory target of 376. With MSK Prasad leading the way with an unbeaten 69, Andhra managed to reach 211-5 before play was called off. Hyderabad ended up with one point for having gained a one-run first innings lead. The Baroda-Tamil Nadu match at Chennai too ended in a draw, after the visitors made 250-5 in their second innings. Opener Satyajit Parab (68) and middle-order bat Tushar Arothe (66*) were the two men who score the bulk of the runs for their team. Tamil Nadu, though, had the satisfaction of gaining the only point on offer, as a result of having secured a 46-run first innings lead on the third day.At the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, an unbeaten hundred from Rashmi Ranjan Parida ensured that the Orissa-Punjab match ended in a draw. Parida made 126 not out off 141 balls, as the hosts made 256-6 in their second essay after Punjab had secured the vital first innings lead.Madhya Pradesh complete eight-wicket win over MaharashtraLeft-arm spinner Mandar Dalvi claimed five wickets and triggered a Maharashtra second innings collapse which ensured an eight-wicket win for Madhya Pradesh at Indore. After the visitors were dismissed for a paltry 151, Madhya Pradesh led by captain and opener Amay Khurasiya (60) knocked off the target of 107, losing just two second innings wickets. The hosts were rewarded with two points for their efforts.

Millwall dealt Josh Windass transfer blow

Millwall have been dealt a blow in their bid to bring Josh Windass to The Den this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who revealed in a post on Twitter that Sheffield Wednesday are demanding a fee in the region of £5m in order to part with the midfielder.

Nixon added that the price the Owls are requesting for the 27-year-old is likely to rule Gary Rowett’s side out of a potential move, with the Lions unlikely to be able to afford a deal for Windass.

Rowett will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Windass was for Sheffield Wednesday last season, the fact that the recently-relegated side are demanding a fee five times greater than what Millwall were reported to have offered for him is sure to have left Rowett gutted.

Indeed, over his 41 Championship appearances for the Owls last term, the £1.44m-rated man scored nine goals, provided six assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 1.9 shots and playing 0.7 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £10,000-per-week man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.80, ranking him as Darren Moore’s seventh-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, with the midfielder dubbed an “explosive” player by his father Dean only being outscored by Jed Wallace in terms of Championship goals in the Millwall side last season, as well as registering more assists than any Lions player, Windass certainly would have seemed a fantastic addition to Rowett’s squad this summer.

However, unless the 47-year-old Millwall manager can raise the £5m fee required to sign Windass through player sales, or unless Wednesday lower their asking price for the 27-year-old, it would appear that a deal to bring the midfielder to The Den this summer is dead in the water.

Everton fans on Richarlison call-up

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as news emerged involving Richarlison.

As per the Brazil international team’s official Twitter page, he has been called up to their squad for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Games do not end until Sunday 8 August, and the Toffees’ first fixture of the new 2021/22 Premier League season is at home against Southampton the following Saturday.

Given that he has been involved in the Copa America as well, it means that Richarlison is very likely to miss that first game against the Saints and maybe a few more after that, depending on how much rest he is given by Rafa Benitez.

Nonetheless, it is no surprise to see so many Everton supporters fuming, as it is likely that they will be without the 24-year-old for the start of the campaign.

England in need of rescue

A former Queensland lifesaver left England’s tour of Australia in desperate need of rescue as he guided the Prime Minister’s XI to a four-wicket win over the tourists at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday.

Brent Read10-Dec-2002CANBERRA, Dec 10 AAP – A former Queensland lifesaver left England’s tour of Australia in desperate need of rescue as he guided the Prime Minister’s XI to a four-wicket win over the tourists at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday.All-rounder Lee Carseldine, who has only taken one wicket in domestic limited overs cricket this summer and averaged a tick over 17 with the bat, did his best impression of Garry Sobers with bat and ball against the struggling tourists. The loss meant England’s winless start to its tour of Australia now stretches over 11 matches and more than 50 days, a worrying statistic with the one day international series to get underway on Friday.Carseldine, bowling left-arm medium pace, picked up the wicket of Paul Collingwood with only his second ball of the match and added Ian Blackwell in his third over, finishing with figures of 2-7 from five overs as England was restricted to 152 from 40.4 overs. The PM’s XI then cruised to victory with more than 10 overs to spare, passing England for the loss of six wickets. The match was reduced to 42 overs a side after overnight rain delayed the start by almost two hours.Carseldine formed the backbone to the PM’s run chase, holding the innings together after England quick James Kirtley took three early wickets to have the hosts 3-37 in the ninth over. When Carseldine was dismissed playing a loose shot off Craig White for 46, captain Mark Waugh took charge, punishing Collingwood and young off-spinner Gareth Batty.Waugh was eventually dismissed for 42 when he attempted to put Batty over the mid-wicket fence and only managed to give Andy Flintoff a simple catch. But by then the damage had been done.Earlier, England scrambled to 152 thanks to Academy rookies Chris Read and Batty, who saved the tourists from another potentially embarrassing situation. The pair came together with England reeling at 7-85 in the 25th over, but combined in a sensible 61-run partnership which ensured the tourists would set some semblance of a run chase.Victorian paceman Mick Lewis was the pick of the PM’s XI bowlers, finishing with 3-22 from 8.4 overs while South Australian Paul Rofe took 3-34 (six overs) and Victorian leg spinner Cameron White 2-36 (9).Read, playing in place of the rested Alec Stewart, finished not out on 33 after a controlled 42-ball innings while Batty’s 29 came off 40 balls and included two fours and a six from a Simon Katich over. The unheralded duo needed to produce some heroics after Rofe rebounded from an early hammering to take the first three wickets to fall – Nick Knight (2), Craig White (17) and captain Marcus Trescothick (21).
