Abahani fans are looking towards Hussain and Malik

Arch rivals Abahani K.C

Shahryar Khan05-May-2001Arch rivals Abahani K.C. and Mohammedan Sporting met on the rain-drenched BNS ground today in the decisive Premier League match where the winner will instantly become champion.Earlier, due to a heavy but brief shower, the match was reduced to 33 overs a side. Mohammedan won the toss and their decision to bat did not surprise anyone because the pitch was damp and the spinners were going to benefit.Abahani set off sluggishly, mostly due to Azam Iqbal who took 60 balls over his painful 30 – slow-going in a rain-shortened game. They received a blow when run-machine Md. Hussain (21) tried to lift the ball to Rashedul only to offer a catch.New batsman Nafis Iqbal looked quite troubled by the off-breaks of Maurice Odumbe and soon fall prey to him by giving a nick to Mortaza at 15. After the fall of Asadullah Khan (19), it was evident that the spinners would dominate.Shoaib Malik did well to guide his side to a fighting total. His efforts included a straight six but Sanwar got him for 26 when he tried to flick him to point where he was comfortably caught.Abahani were dismissed for 160, a total which Mohammedan Sporting seemed content to chase as they all looked satisfied at the end of the innings. The spinners’ performance was spectacular though the pitch got the credit. Odumbe took 2 for 17 off five overs and Sanwar 4 for 28 in six.

Man City fans love Eric Garcia news

A number of Manchester City fans are delighted with the news that the Citizens were ready to sell John Stones until Eric Garcia revealed that he wanted to leave the club.

Stones has enjoyed a fantastic campaign after previously coming under fire from many supporters for his performances. He has made 32 appearances in all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League (Transfermarkt). In the 20 Premier League matches in which he has featured, City have conceded nine goals – in the other 15, they have shipped 17 goals.

Meanwhile, the £18m-valued Garcia (Transfermarkt) has been somewhat of a pariah at the Etihad Stadium after he revealed his intention to leave City (Sky Sports)- he will eventually do so on a free transfer. However, he may have redeemed himself in the eyes of some supporters after it was revealed by The Athletic’s Sam Lee that his desire to move on meant that Pep Guardiola kept Stones at the club.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s fans. These supporters took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on this turn of events.

Everton fans slam Allan vs Aston Villa

Some Everton fans were left slamming the display of Allan in their 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Thursday evening.

It was no doubt a frustrating game for the Merseyside club as they look to chase European qualification, but Carlo Ancelotti was certainly let down by some of his players, none more so than Allan.

The central midfield player did not have his best game for the Goodison Pak faithful, losing out on no fewer than 12 of his duels, the most lost out of any player to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

Allan failed to record a single clearance or interception, as he also lost possession of the ball on eight separate occasions in the match, earning him a very measly 6.4 overall rating on Sofascore, the lowest out of both sets of players.

HC seeks reply from BCCI on accountability to Government

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a reply from the Board of Control for Cricket in India whether it is accountable to the Government and the nature of its affiliation to the International Cricket Council

23-May-2001The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a reply from the Board of Control for Cricket in India whether it is accountable to the Government and the nature of its affiliation to the International Cricket Council.A division Bench comprising Chief Justice Arijit Passayat and Justice DK Jain asked the BCCI counsel Kapil Sibal to give details on these aspects by July 25 after Additional Solicitor General KK Sud said the Centre had no control over the Board. “We had asked during the last hearing also that when the team selected by the BCCI to play matches with other countries is called as the Indian team, how can the Board say that it is not accountable to the Government of India,” the Bench asked.”If you (BCCI) is affiliated to the ICC, what control has the ICC on the Board and what is the status of the Boards of other countries with regard to the ICC,” the Bench asked Sibal while seeking reply on these aspects. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by twocricket fans – Rahul Mehra and Shantanu Sharma – in the wake of the match fixing scandal in New Delhi. While accusing the Board of mismanaging the affairs of cricket in the country, they had sought a probe into the functioning of BCCI.Submitting an affidavit on behalf of the Union Sports Ministry, Sud said “as per information provided by the BCCI no grant by way of funds, or allotment of land for stadia are being given to it by the Centre or any state Government.”However, Mehra arguing the matter personally said the information furnished by the BCCI to the ministry was not “true” as the Government had leased land worth crores of rupees to the Board in various cities at a very low price. The Sports Ministry said the BCCI is an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act responsible for overall promotion of the game of cricket in the country. As per the information received from the England and Wales Cricket Board, the ECB is a limited company formed under the Companies Act, it said adding that information from other cricket playing countries was still awaited. The PIL alleged that the BCCI and its member associations had beenfunctioning in an “arbitrary and opaque manner” without any accountability to the Government for their actions and the accounts.Seeking audit of BCCI’s accounts by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), the petitioner alleged that the Board was spending less money on promotion of the game than on other activities, while the Income Tax Department had granted various exemptions to it.The PIL stated that while the BCCI’s annual income had grown at an average of 28 per cent during the past several years, it had shown expenditure on the game at a relatively low average of 21 per cent per annum. The Ministry admitted that the BCCI had been granted exemption from income tax through a notification issued by the Government in July 1996.The Board was also being exempted from entertainment tax by stategovernments when matches were organised in their territories, it said.

Sheffield United’s Jebbison linked away

Sheffield United are facing a serious battle to keep hold of Daniel Jebbison this summer, with Champions League clubs now circling ahead of the transfer window.

According to 90min, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have joined the race to sign the exciting 17-year-old, whilst a number of Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Everton are also said to be interested.

The England U18 international made his first appearance for the Blades as a substitute against Crystal Palace recently and was rewarded with his first start for the club against Everton on Sunday night.

It was a dream full debut for the teenager, as he gave the Blades the lead with just seven minutes on the clock, showing great instincts to turn Jack Robinson’s cross past Jordan Pickford.

That would prove to be the only goal of the game and Blades fans will be hoping to see him feature again in their final two Premier League fixtures, before their return to the Championship next season.

Jebbison, who also has six goals in six FA Youth Cup games this season, taking his tally for the season to seven, spent the first half of the season on loan with non-league Chorley and showed exactly why Blades fans should be excited about his future in the win at Goodison Park.

Therefore, the Bramall Lane faithful will certainly be disappointed if the 17-year-old was to depart this summer to join a huge club such as Bayern Munich, where he would be unlikely to get first-team opportunities for at least a couple of years.

They will undoubtedly be hoping to tie Jebbison down to a new long-term contract and keep him around the squad, so that he can start fulfilling his obvious potential at Bramall Lane ahead of a potentially money-spinning move in the future, instead of a move away this summer which would be unlikely to bring in a huge fee.

Unfortunately, the young striker may well have his head turned by one of the big clubs this summer, and it will may prove difficult to keep him with the Yorkshire side ahead of next season but United should be doing all they can to convince him that his immediate future should be with the Blades.

Derby: Waghorn linked with Cardiff move

Derby County striker Martyn Waghorn has been linked with a move to fellow Championship club Cardiff City this summer.

The Lowdown: Waghorn out of contract

The 31-year-old scored five goals and registered four assists in the Championship in 2020/21, doing his bit to keep the Rams in the division. His contribution on the final day of the campaign was nothing short of heroic, scoring twice in a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday when a defeat would have sent Wayne Rooney’ side down and kept the Owls in the second tier.

Like a number of Derby players, however, Waghorn’s contract at Pride Park expires in the summer, meaning that he is likely to move on to pastures new.

The Latest: Cardiff linked with move

According to Football Insider, Cardiff are eyeing up a move for the forward, looking to bring him in on a free transfer over the summer.

Waghorn, who earns £7,900 per week and has been described as ‘excellent’ by journalist Ryan Conway, could yet stay at Derby, with the club reportedly keen on giving him a new deal.

The Verdict: Keep hold of him

Waghorn still has enough quality to suggest that Derby should retain his services moving forward, with the striker scoring 30 goals in 123 appearances for the Rams, also registering 13 assists.

At 31, it would be remiss to think of him as an ‘old’ player. He still has plenty to offer, coming good when it mattered most at the season’s climax, while his Championship pedigree speaks for itself, having netted 75 times in the division throughout his career.

Waghorn might not be perfect, but he doesn’t stand out as someone Derby should be quick to jettison. Failing to offer him a new deal wouldn’t be much gratitude for scoring the goals which kept them up on the final day.

In other news, some Derby fans have been calling for one of Waghorn’s team-mates to be sold this summer. Find out who it is here.

Parore gets his milestone just in time

Retiring New Zealand wicket-keeper Adam Parore achieved the goal that he has always targeted, reaching 200 wicket-keeping dismissals when taking one of the key wickets for New Zealand in their 78-run win over England in Auckland today

Lynn McConnell03-Apr-2002Retiring New Zealand wicket-keeper Adam Parore achieved the goal that he has always targeted, reaching 200 wicket-keeping dismissals when taking one of the key wickets for New Zealand in their 78-run win over England in Auckland today.Parore caught Graham Thorpe, double century maker in the first Test, for four runs off Daryl Tuffey’s bowling. It was an important milestone in terms of wicket-keeping and he had been stuttering his way towards it through the series. It had been nice to finally get the dismissal so that he could get on and enjoy the day.The people who are on the list ahead of him had always been his heroes since he had been a child.”I used to read about them in books and watch them on videos,” he said.Inevitably, he was asked about the appeal from Andrew Flintoff in the first innings when replays showed the ball was nowhere near the bat.”I heard a sound and appealed.”We’ve had nine caught behinds given not out that were definitely out this summer. You get some freebies and some go against you, that’s the game. If the umpire turns one down I don’t blame the batsman for not walking off the ground.”It’s got nothing to do with us, the umpires make the decision and you live by it. Some go your way, some don’t,” he said.On reflection, Parore said that starting young had been a good thing but it meant that he was not really a good Test player until about halfway through his career.Parore did explain a possible reason for the catching problems New Zealand experienced during the series, and which produced the unusual sight today of a reliable fieldsman like Chris Harris completely failing to see a ball coming at him at gully, while Brooke Walker also struggled to see a ball that flew past him at point to the boundary. He said it was the light at this time of the year, late in the season.”It is very milky, and a soft light, you have no idea where the ball is when it comes out of that sightscreen [southern end] at you,” he said.As regards his retirement he said there were other things he wanted to do.”For me the decision was made on a number of levels. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to play cricket any more, it was just that I wanted to do other things more.”I would like to have a career in business, not tour, have a family and I’m 31 years of age and got no job, I’ve got no family and I’m not married. At the end of my life I always saw myself as people thinking of me as a cricketer.”It’s something I’ve thought about seriously for five years now,” he said, adding that he started to think seriously about last October, it hadn’t been a bolt out of the blue.He ends his career after 78 Tests in which he scored 2865 runs at 26.28 with 197 catches and seven stumpings.

Ferguson vs Gauld: who should Rangers sign?

Rangers have been linked with both Lewis Ferguson and Ryan Gauld in recent weeks but who would be the better addition to Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox this summer?

Lewis Ferguson

According to Football Insider, Rangers are readying a bid for the 21-year-old Aberdeen ace after he handed in a transfer request at Pittodrie, with Premier League-bound Watford also reportedly keen on signing him.

The Scotland under-21 international has enjoyed an excellent season with the Dons, contributing eight goals and four assists in the Premiership, averaging a commendable 7.07/10 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

The £2.7m-rated midfielder is contracted at Pittodrie until 2024 but looks set to depart Stephen Glass’ side this summer after it was revealed that he had handed in a transfer request, although that was subsequently rejected by Aberdeen.

Ryan Gauld

According to Vital Rangers, Ryan Gauld would be interested in joining Rangers this season and would be available on a free transfer, as his contract with Portuguese club SC Farense is set to expire this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The former Dundee United wonderkid has rebuilt his career in Portugal in recent seasons with Farense and has dazzled this season, contributing nine goals and seven assists in 33 Liga NOS appearances, which has helped him to earn a very impressive 7.19 rating from WhoScored.

The 25-year-old, who has been dubbed a “top player”, is also attracting interest from the Premier League and the Championship, so Ross Wilson and Gerrard will have to work quickly if they are to bring him to Ibrox this summer.

Who would be the better singing?

Although Ferguson is a very attractive long-term option due to his impressive performances with Aberdeen aged just 21, Gauld established himself with Dundee United in the top flight as a teenager and earned a move to Sporting Lisbon for his performances.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Whilst it didn’t work out for him there, his fantastic performances this season certainly suggest that he would be a stellar addition to Gerrard’s side next term; and given that he will be available on a free, he looks to be a better option for Rangers this summer, so Wilson should definitely look to bring him in.
